>>59319307In Crystal I always made it a point to get both Phanpy and Teddiursa the earliest possible just simply because of how cute their sprites look in that game and how hard they are to get since you can only get them in the morning AND they have a pretty high chance to flee AND a low encounter rate AND a relatively low catch rate considering how you basically have to catch them at full health so they don't flee. Too bad Donphan's and Ursaring's sprites aren't as nearly as cute. Phanpy's/Donphan's level up moveset is pretty awful in gen 2 since it learns almost exclusively Normal type moves plus Rollout and doesn't get its FIRST level up Ground type move till Donphan at level 49 in Earthquake. Teddiursa's/Ursaring's is kind of alright though since it at least gets STAB from the many Normal type moves it learns and learns Lick and Faint Attack early on so it can hit Ghost types.

>>59319556As much as I love Crystal no Mareep really does screw you over when it comes to Electric type options. The next best thing really for an early Electric type that doesn't require an evolution stone (which for some reason were a pain in the ass to get in gen 2 compared to gen 1) is getting an Elekid from the Odd Egg (high chance of being Shiny too) and evolving it into Electabuzz. His stats are a solid 490 which is only 10 points lower than Ampharos. You can also get Pikachu from the same Odd Egg but Pikachu sucks in battle plus getting a Thunder Stone is hard.Besides that there's also ones like Magneton, Lanturn, and Electrode but only somewhat later on. Also Jolteon but again stones are hard to get. It looks like in gen 2 they really wanted to force you into using the newest Eeveelutions at the time Espeon or Umbreon rather than the three you're already familiar with from the previous game.
