Need to improve my display of all my big-love cards, I've been using the ones from the Paldean Fates promo boxes back when this stuff wasn't impossible to find, but I ran out of them, as well as mantle-space, and dunno what to do now that Mega Darkrai joined the family. What do you Anons use? I'm looking into wall-hang case displays, but I'm not liking what I find so far, aside from some flat modulars I can put vinyl strips over for coloring or patterns.

Am I retarded for liking the look of non-foil vintage better than foil? Every card I've seen that has both a foil and non-foil variant I think the non-foil looks better. I can see way more details in the art. I don't know if these are just bad photos online, but I swear every single time the foil looks worse.

That's half the reason, there are many sets from the mid era that followed the same pattern in terms of scarcity and low hype at the time, that now are organically expensive but not THAT expensive.
The other half of the truth is people exploiting socials and reddit to send the message that a certain set of cards (in this case the gold stars) has always been the pinnacle of collecting, which is false, but nowadays 90% of collectors started last year with 151 so they simply don't know shit about the last 20 years of TCG, so they blindly trust the grifters and rush to spend $3k for cards that were $50 a few years ago, doubling down in the reddit post with "finally got my personal chase that I didn't even know existed until 3 months ago".
Another example is the Coro Mew. It was cheap as shit 2 years ago, now it's treated as the best and most iconic Japanese promo ever printed, and people will pretend they have chased it for decades.
With vintage and mid era they can only target certain sets, while with modern they can pump whatever they want and the cattle will follow. See for example the ugly lovebirds being the face of the SM era, or Umbreon becoming the best Pokemon in the world from SWSH onwards.

Expedition(sucks), Aquapolis, and Skyridge make sense not only for lower print run but due to the fact that Aquapolis and Skyridge have a shit ton of holo foils, way more than any other WotC set

Ex era was easily the best era for Pokemon cards, the stamps, the artwork, the subsets, the reverse holos having the hidden pokeballs, all the holo bleed and holo errors

I would say Corocoro Mew was simply underrated because W*stoids didn't know it existed. $50-75 for an old back promo was pretty expensive, right up until COVID hype started.
That said, yeah the gold stars hype is pretty artificial, never mind graded slop people will go insane for the raws and the fact is that back in the day they were rare enough that people never knew they existed and those who did didn't really rate the art much. You can see the sort of "shooting star" aesthetic Fukuda was aiming for and I think it worked but lots of the mons just look ok. Fug and the Hoenn starters are probably the best looking of these. Never mind that Pokemon wasn't popular when they were printing, the Neo era Shining Pokemon were always much more well known/desired. I would say that's true even today, vintage will always be king.

Unironically I think vintage and mid era commons and uncommon are some of the best looking cards in the game. There are some foils that I think look good but generally speaking most of the "grails" or "chases" look like shit and I think people only like them because they're expensive. I'd be a horrible "investor" but collecting is very stress free.

I have learned not to pay $15-20 a pack in the hopes of getting the SIR I wanted and just bought it as a single. Also $20 per ascended pack is wild. I opened a bunch of mega evo and got the SIR Lillie, though. (which I wanted)
