I did the same, although I wasn't upset, I realised what the game actually meant and felt really stupid. But I was too excited to play the game to restart lol.
I still think it was a strange way to implement naming your rival. I mean he literally talls to you and introduces himself. Why would you be prompted to make up a name for him after? It's just kinda weird.

Naming the rival is a feature I don't care being ditched in newer games, even though it was funny naming him BUTTFACE or whatever. I like them having a canon name and that's what everyone uses online anyway.

The way they should have done it was have him say "My name is..." and then it would immediately transition to the naming screen so the player understands they're the one deciding his name. It'd be like when you get Barret in Final Fantasy VII or when you recruit Duster in Mother 3.
