I often see people who criticize FRLG say that the abilities of the Pokemon in the game are just placeholders and just don't make sense. Like how for example too many NPCs have Pokemon with poison point, etcIs this a valid criticism or is it just anti-FRLG cope?
Bump
>>59337753you are massively gay for self-bumping but i will answer your question regardless:FRLG is not properly balanced around the new abilities, particularly in regard to status effects. many pokemon have abilities that inflict some sort of status on contact. and since at this point in the series many pokemon still relied heavily on normal-type moves, many of which made contact, status effects are going to be inflicted far more often than in the original. this is not gamebreaking but it is really annoying.
>>59337634Would need more specific examples as the Poison Point one is kinda dumb. Literally every Pokemon with Poison Point at this point had a perfectly valid reason for doing so. The Nidos obviously have prominent poisonous appendages, Qwilfish has it's spikes and is clearly based off of fugu, Roselia has poisonous barbs which is in part a clear adage to "even a beautiful rose has thorns" and Seadra literally has dex entries stating that the tips of it's fins are poisonous. Complaining about it from a logic standpoint would be midwit behaviour. Complaining about it from a game standpoint would be retard behaviour for failing to have Mon with non-contact moves.
>>59337634gen 1 pokemon abilities are all retarded, you have like 90% physical contact bullshit, 9% intimidate, than gengar getting levitate for some reason. There was no thought in their actions
>>59337776something can make sense and still be a bad idea because it negatively impacts the GAMEPLAY because this is a GAME and you PLAY it
>>59337790>Not having a mix of attacks on your MonIt's literally your own fault for being stupid. I could understand if you're specifically doing a Physical only challenge run or something, but if you have even an iota of common sense, you'd have some variety. Also it's fucking Pokemon, just have antidotes, what are you, poor? Poison STING should be doing more to debilitate your team than fucking Poison Point. What kind of bitch kid team are you running for fucking Poison Point to be an issue? Literally every Pokemon with it is a victim to a TON of non-contact moves. Many of which don't even need to be super effective. I'm sorry but if you're unironically getting pressed by fucking Poison Point in current year, then maybe Pokemon is a bit too high level for the person in question. Maybe some Nintendogs or Mixtape would be more their speed.
>>59337634Just buy more Antidotes/Paraylize Heal and switch Pokemon when you see one with Poison Point/Static incoming. It's not that hard bro.>>59337777>than gengar getting levitate for some reasonGengar was still a ghost and consistently shown to float in multiple media, even if his standing sprite was, well, standing. It wasn't hard to believe that he could float like his prevos. Honestly even in SV he still floats as his walking animation, despite not having the ability.
>>59337799The speedrun goes from using badass nidoking in gen1 to fucking blastoise in frlg. That's how trash it is, dude.
>>59337799excessive contact abilities does not encourage the player to use a mix of physical and special moves, it encourages them to eschew physical moves entirely.
>>59337762Okay but my point is: isn't this a conscious gameplay decision, rather than an oversight or a lack of balancing?
>>59337776Anon, I agree with you. It's just that I keep seeing this "anti-FRLG argument" being used a lot. I personally disagree with it, but I want to understand whether there's more to it than just baseless complaining.
>>59337777>gen 1 pokemon abilities are all retarded, you have like 90% physical contact bullshit, 9% intimidate, than gengar getting levitate for some reason. There was no thought in their actionsThe question is not whether YOU consider them retarded. The question is whether or not this was an intentional gameplay decision by GameFreak. Or was it unintentional lack of balancing.
>>59337949Maybe go ask gamefreak then, retard
I think people here are acting like Game Devs. If GameFreak gave these Pokémon said abilities, it was an intentional decision obviously.
>>59337634It's a literal non issue
>>59338793Yes, but some people are claiming that the game isn't "balanced" with these new abilities in mind.Personally I think this is just not true.
>>59337634I have never once thought of the impact abilities have on a playthrough of FRLG I just play the game and enjoy it
>>59337935if it's a conscious decision it's a terrible one
>>59338786They had to give like 500 Pokemon abilities. A lot of them just didn't do a lot to begin with. The power level was lower, but this also made good abilities (Levitate, weather, etc) stand out more.Ultimately it doesn't matter if it was deliberate. The effect it has on either making the pokemon with it weaker, or making contact moves annoying to use in FRLG is enough.
This is such a retardedly overstated complaint. In the whole game, there is only the Nidoran dual evolution line and Seadra with Poison Point. You have Effect Spore on the Paras line. You have Static and Cute Charm on TWO (2) evolution lines each in the whole game. That is less than 10% of the entire 151 Kanto lineup having a contact status ability of ANY kind. What's extra retarded about this argument in terms of "balance" is the people making it seem to forget you can easily remove all of those with items.>but Cute CharmSwap out to a different Pokemon. Also, if the ability is so troublesome to deal with, they act like they don't also have access to the same list of Pokemon. Catch a Nidoran, a Horsea, a Paras, etc. Try something new instead of arguing in bad faith. Literally a non issue like >>59338793 said.
>>59337634Idk, when I try to remember popular talking points kinda related to op were the starters abilities, especially before HAs and legendaries with pressure. All three starters are great IF in frlg and so are thr birds so idk if it applies here
So this is really easy. Since all the pokemon data was in RS before FRLG, that means that they had to program the abilities and choose them before the Kanto remakes got started. This makes it very easy to believe that the game was not actively balanced around these abilities and why so many of them felt very placeholder. The data existed before the game, so they might not have had a good idea as to how it would effect the game in a practical sense especially when your starters had options to avoid contact moves if it worried you.
>>59338887No, they didn't. They had to give 386 abilities, and they weren't dolling out fucking placeholders for the 151 that were in the game they were already starting to work on.
>>59338955Stop writing like a pretentious reddit faggot and try using your pea brain for one single second. They KNEW they were remaking RG after RS released. RS had been in development since 2000. During the development Masuda decided they should do remakes next because the GBA was so impressive. This was decided on in early 2002, which would have given the team more than enough time to check over the 151's abilities, knowing they had to be the same in both games to allow connectivity.
>>59337634I’ve genuinely never heard this complaint before
>>59338965Furthermore, FRLG is a remake, not a brand new game, meaning that the devs already had a good idea of how it would work (everything except for the Sevii Islands).
>>59338793>>59338875>>59338937>nuh uhthis didn’t work for johto and it’s not going to work here
>>59339111dog I don't even know what you're talking about, please I'm trying to tell you I legit have never heard of this issue like I've heard of a bad level curve for Johto, hoenn having too much water, Diamond and Pearl being slow ETC but I legit have never heard abilities in fuckin FRLG being a thing people have thought about at all if you can prove me wrong I'd love that but I've nver even thought of status conditions in pokemon after what the first gym I've got enough money to buy up some antidotes and the like so it's never been an issue for me
>>59338876How is it a "terrible" one? It addresses the issue the originals had of Body Slam trivialising all non rock type encounters.
>>59337634This is just a bad example, I'm baffled by the Grass types though. There are 14 Grass types in Kanto and 9 of them have Chlorophyll, and then in gen 5 the Bulbasaur line got Chlorophyll too making it 12 out of 14.
>>59339220Chlorophyll mons are based though
>>59339207It's just faggots spamming physical moves, them being punished for it and refusing to learn anything from those interactions.
>>59339217>It addresses the issue the originals had of Body Slam trivialising all non rock type encounters.Literally this
>>59339228>It's just faggots spamming physical moves, dog that's just using moves lmao who the fuck thinks about that shit when playing a normal ass playthough????>and refusing to learn anything from those interactions.what is there to learn just use a fuckin Full Heal lmao
>>59339241The games gives you several options, either learn to use moves that don't trigger those abilities (non contact or special moves), buy some items to heal the status, get some berries from pickup to heal the statuses or travel back to heal at the pokemon center. It's very well balanced and rewards a deeper knowledge of the mechanics.
>>59339248>>59337812
>>59339248Yeah I get that my point is this isn't even a "thing" to put thought into>>59339298or just still use the contact move anyways???? It's fuckin poison it's not a big deal lol either way this is a non issue
>>59339298No, because there are also special walls.
>>59339327That's a great point
>>59339325>nuh uh
OP here, I even remember an anon on here who said:>GameFreak knew that having so many Pokemon with Poison Point in FRLG was a mistake, because right in the next generation (Diamond and Pearl) they gave a second ability to all of the Pokemon with Poison Point (like both the male and female Nidoran families getting Rivalry)According to that anon, all the Diamond/Pearl NPC trainer encounters with Nidorans and other Pokemon with potential Poison Point ability, used their OTHER ability, to avoid poisoning the player too often. Idk if that's true or not.I honestly think people are blowing this out of proportion. I always thought it was cool how in FRLG you need more antidotes, full heals, and so on.
>>59340458Considering most people overlevel their starters and spam stab moves, this is such a non-issue I don't even know why we have a thread.
>>59340467I agree with you but some people here like to complain about everything.
>go into thread about topic>get mad that people are discussing topic because it's "not a big deal"what causes this
