Gen 7 deserves some appreciation. They tried to mix up the formula and test out the waters for a more mature tone shift (especially with the main story of the original Sun and Moon)

Sun & Moon had a lot of interesting concepts, but the execution fell flat because you were forced to be a side character in a story revolving around an NPC. Alola was a mediocre region, as well. Route design was pretty boring overall.
