It added a new area to explore, gave interesting content that wasn't just trying to simulate online play, and gave you a taste of competitive movesets. I think it was a good bridge that let players decide if they wanted to dip their toes in that sphere or not. I prefered it to the postgame facilities in Sun/Moon or X/Y where it's just simulating competitive play for 7 battles in a row.
