Instead of doing the usual "Ash visited new region and fight gyms", it's an original story that revolved around a girl and boy who are trying to learn about a hero and why his action affects them today. Episode 1-136 is the Rakua saga, basically the main story. Now that's over, the team currently just exploring the world, since gen 10 is coming out next year. Think of it as this, it's a JRPG, they complete the main story and is now doing post game side quests.

They're not rare or unique anymore, because now there's regional variants of them. They're not leagues stronger than average pokemon, since final evolution starters can apparently beat them.
