What was the consensus when these came out in 2006
>>59397577i don't know
>>59397577saved pokemania after poopy/shatpphire/hemorrhoid flopped and shitted
>>59397577I like it.
>>59397585People will shit on it being slow but they have no idea how little people cared when we had day and night back.
>>59397577good
>>59397577everyone loved them, and then they loved heart gold/soul silver even morealso pokewalkers
>>59397577I can only remember people worrying where GF would go after introducing god
Solid games.>related to the OPI never touched sword/shield. only main line games I didn't bother with. Were they good?
>>59397577Slow as fuck slopshit. Legend bloat with half the fucking dex being legendaries
Having online was a huge thing, but back then a lot of the designs were considered questionable. Things like the game being slow as shit and the dogshit Pokemon pool were only something people really got sick of as time went on and the honeymoon period ended. XY has a similar problem but without the dogshit Pokemon pool actually.
people liked them, they were considered safe entries with nothing new and shit graphics but were pretty well received.
>>59397594>Saving a lot of data...Nah I was tempted to drop it like 3 times, the underground being kino was what made me finish it.Also zoomers complain about FRLG requiring 60 captures for the natdex but DP requires you to see every mon in the dex, absolute bloat and pointless padding.
For zillennials we had already checked out into halo
>>59397577The 3d was kino but the starters were so shit i almost dropped it but then dawns cute ass taught me to catch and i was hooked especially after jubilife city.
>>59397577Slow, frail and mixed.
>>59397577peak of pokemania
>>59397724>DP requires you to see every mon in the dex, absolute bloat and pointless padding. You get to see almost every pokemon just by normally playing through the game.
>>59397577People didn't like the legendaries and their story because it felt like the series was jumping the shark both in terms of design and powerlevels. This part was definitely considered a downgrade from RSE.But as a game, people liked it quite a lot from my experience. Most people were happy about the Physical/Special split (except for a few turbo autists who are still seething about it today), it shook the meta up so it was a lot of fun to explore new possibilities for competitive. I also remember people saying that the graphics are pretty good, it was considered a lot better looking than Gen 3. I also agree with this, I actually still consider it one of the best looking mainline Pokémon gens, if not the best. The game being slow was honestly not being pointed out much back then. The thing is that it's not that noticeable when just playing through the game because you don't fight (with) many Pokémon that have a lot of health and don't get the "Saving a lot of data" prompt that often. Plus people were just more patient about stuff like this if you ask me. It's just something that got noticed in later stages of the game and got perceived worse over time because of shitposting and also cause people got more impatient overall.>>59397585You are obviously a child who wasn't even alive back then.>>59397714They are dogshit if you ask me. Even SV was better. I wish I would've skipped them. Don't play them.
>>59398345legendaries and their story are cool
>>59398404They went too far with making them literal gods, everyone thought it was ridiculous. But it was probably cool if you were 10 and DPPt was your first game.
>>59397632everyone with a working brain still favors HGSS
It was big, because the DS was big. WiFi culture started in places like YouTube and serebii forums. Glitches unlocking the Pokemon God were hyped. Some people speculated that the Pokedex could end with Arceus.
>>59397724>Saving a lot of data...This isn’t anywhere near as big of a problem as people make it.
>>59397577A big mix of positives and negatives.
>>59398274Not me, i was the prime age for these gamesT. 1999
>>59397577my friend group really liked it and there was this big optimism about anything DS related, I remember being super jelly that my friend had a DS and I wouldn't get one for another year or so
>>59398274>Enjoyed Reach a lot >4 comes out>It’s gay and retarded>Dread the possibility of all halo games afterwards being gayer and more retarded (I was right, even doe MCC is alright)>Go back to Pokémon>Await XY>It’s also gay and retarded2013 was possibly the worst year of my life, as that’s when I realized that the SOVL was gone and it will never return.
>>59398498how else are you going to downplay the best gen, if thats supposed to be the only major 'flaw' then you know the gen is good
>>59398702>opinions confuse mekek
>>59397577Look at these 3 reviews from 2007https://www.yetanotherreviewsite.co.uk/2007/08/10/pokemon-diamondpearl/https://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/13354/pokemon-diamond-n-pearl-nintendo-dshttps://www.gamespot.com/reviews/pokymon-diamond-pokymon-pearl-review/1900-6169567/They all boil down to "Yep, it's what you expect from a Pokémon game, pretty good, nice graphics, online features are a great addition, touch screen features are meh, 4/5"However, note how not even a single of these reviews criticises the game being slow or any other of the common critiques that peope have about the game today. Literally no one cared about that shit back then, and it only emerged much later when permanently online ADHD zoomer autists played the newer games first and then went back to older gens and tried their hardest to nitpick shit no normal player cares about like "muh no fire types" or "muh slow frail mixed attackers"This was amplified tenfold over the course of the years through shitposting and genwarring, and now everyone who didn't grow up with those games adapted the astroturfed opinion on it instead of forming their own unbiased opinions
>>59397577I was 10 years old in 2006, all I was thinking was "Cool, a new Pokemon game!"
>>59398457Having pokegods is fine, gives it a greek mythology aspect to the pokemon world. I was 15 when I first played gen 4.
>>59398345I prefer gods of space and time to armored wolves—one embedded in a shield and the other with a sword in its mouth.
>>59397577It was considered the nail in the coffin for many.
>>59398345>Most people were happy about the Physical/Special split (except for a few turbo autists who are still seething about it today)It ended up giving us terrible powercreep. It was only good for a casual audience. I started playing competitive in the BW1 era, even though I had been playing casually since gen 2, and playing competitive gen 3 is really just straight up more fun. The tendency after the split was that stats started becoming more and more min-maxed with quite the broad coverage at no cost.
Battling and trading over the internet was fucking mind-blowing back then. It's a "you had to be there" game. Obviously today there's little point to just play through the game for its single player content.
>>59399013So it was good for Pokemons intended audience of people who beat the elite four then turn off the game forever?
I liked the mining mechanics a little too much back then, looking forward to a replay at some point. being able to farm fossil pokemon was a nice addition.
>>59399152It's less fun in general. You can just unga bunga your way through the elite four regardless.
>>59397577I played Platinum, but as a genwunfag, I thought Sinnoh was a nice return to the near-future aesthetic from Kanto. The snowy aesthetic was also pretty novel at the time. It was sweet to have the day night cycle back. Barry was a decent rival, not as good as Silver but a definite improvement from Brendan/May. Also you could name your rival again.Hoenn was cool but it was kind of the black sheep of the regions back then with how disconnected it felt.Wasn’t a huge fan of any of the legendaries though, starting Gen 3, the box art legendaries started looking weirdly mechanical, and it got worse with Gen 4. The lake trio also just felt like ripoffs of Mew.Finally with gen 4 adding new evolutions to old Pokemon, there was a sense of “completeness” to the whole franchise, and in hindsight I can understand Gamefreak’s decision to try a soft reboot.I still think Sinnoh has the best starter trio and music.
>>59398835Cherrypicked reviews, we've been over this dude, do you sincerely want me to link the reviews mentioning the 30fps and slow saving again?
>>59398498It happened every time you made a change in the PC, it was pretty prevalent.
>>59398835>My only qualm is that the entire game feels slow in comparison to the GBA installments. Battles are more sluggish, and when selecting options in the menu, there is some slight delay. Scrolling through your items and Pokédex is a bit choppy too. Your hero also walks slower than a turtle, but luckily, you get the marvelous running shoes early on. https://www.rpgfan.com/review/pokemon-diamond-pearl/It was acknowleged back then dude, that's a review from May 2007.
>>59398340Yes. If you fight every trainer (like you're supposed to) you will see every pokemon and getting the natdex won't be an issue.
>>59397577Online was so fucking huge. No one gave a shit about the slowness because the ability to trade and battle globally through free Nintendo DS wifi was so revolutionary. Even the local multi-player experience was improved since it was wireless. That plus the physical special split and overall rise in 80+ power moves made team building feel really rewarding. As for the single player experience, I recall people generally regarding it as an improvement over gen 3 just because they brought so many Gen 2 features back, which was the main thing people criticized gen 3 for lacking
>new mons look like shit wtf these are just digimon>WHY DO I NEED TO KEEP BIDOOF FUCKING BIDOOF I WANT TO MURDER BIDOOF>SO MANY GODDAMN HMS REMOVE HMS>Why does the new team rocket wear such retarded costumes>THEY RUINED MY BRO NOOOOO>Pokemon gods? really?stuff like that was the major complaints. Most people were still SATISFIED with pokemon overall though; this was when complaints were still minor enough that people were generally not declaring pokemon to be over. That really only happened starting with gen 5 because it was more overtly self-referential as a soft reboot; I love gen 5 and hate gen 4, but there's no denying that dp were more well received at launch.
>>59397724You're pushing 50.
>>59397577there was a lot of hype around the DS and people were excited for the first DS pokemon game.it brought back a lot of fans who dropped Pokemon during the GBA era.
>>59397577WHY ARE SURFING AND SAVING SO GODDAMN SLOWWW???
>>59397577Nobody really cared about them and nobody was talking about them. PSP's were pretty popular so only little kids and nerds played it. Personally at the time I thought it was worse than emerald and I barely even noticed a gameplay difference in special/physical split which is probably why they started maxing the fuck out pokemon stats afterwards.
>>59399013>The tendency after the split was that stats started becoming more and more min-maxed with quite the broad coverage at no cost.i promise i'm not trying to be THAT guy but i feel like these two events don't really have correlation. i don't see how the phys/spec split would have required nu-GF's dumbassery when it comes to minmaxing & powercreep
>>59397577I wouldn't know, but I was hyped with leaks and shit I could find about them going through google images, ah the bliss of being a dumb child.
>>59402158If not for the split, minmaxing wouldn’t be as much of a problem because pokemon with one attacking stat significantly higher than the other would be less likely to be able to make the most out of coverage, want to make use of fire or water coverage, you need good special attack, want to use ground or fighting coverage, you need good physical attack. With the split there is no reason not to put all your points in one attacking stat Of course there more to it, and the split itself didn’t cause power creep, Pokémon on average having much higher BST’s, coverage as a whole being more common especially for shillmons, and those shillmons getting specul snowflake supa saiyan forms, are far influential in powercreep
>>59402158The thing is, before the split you could have a pokemon whose STAB coverage was a balancing act because one of its STABs was special and the other physical. You could either lean physical, special or mixed, and you would necesarily sacrifice something depending on which direction you leaned in. Some pokemon even lacked a good STAB option on their primary stat altogether like Gengar. After the split there was more of a tendency to give most pokemon STAB moves on their primary stat. Which means now many pokemon hit rather hard without any balancing act needed. And lower stat pokemon could no longer compete as much against the higher tier ones that broke free of one of the things that kept them in check. The powercreep jump between gens 3 and 4 is quite noticeable, and a large part of it is related to the split and the new moves added.
