Gen 1 was humans tampering with nature and making abominations and living grenades. Gen 2 focused hard on making the Pokemon like actual animals and they slowly abandoned the concept and now it's just pet shit. ZA doesn't even make sense from any kind of logic.
It's a series that never grew up and infact got stupider and stupider as time went on.

Pokemon have been confirmed to be sentient beings since the first Episode of the Anime when Meowth talked. And then reconfirmed through Mystery Dungeon. They just don't speak the Human Language because it is incredibly hard or in some cases impossible to learn how to speak it with thier vocal cords. Most Pokemon seem to understand Human language perfectly though so the Language barrier is a one way street.

It's not your journey anymore, it's whatever character GameFreak loves this generation's journey. For example, in gen 7, it was Lily. She was the main character, not you. You just exist to push Lily's story along.

It's been this was since gen 5, but Barry had some of what I'm talking about as well. Not to the same degree as Lily, but it's there.

I forgave Gen 6 thinking they were just getting used to full 3D and a new Console. I thought there would be a “Z” fixing the issues I had with Y but it never came.

Gen 7 handheld me like no other. Cut scenes everywhere, didn't even feel like I was the MC in my own games. Moon was bad. Ultra Moon was even worse in this sense.
I was done at this point. I wanted a game that didn’t hold my hand and the very next games would be Let’s Go and would princess carry the player instead.
Never bought that.
Never bought Gen 8.
I saw the direction of the games and knew it only serves people who couldn’t actually care less about them.

With them cutting the Dex in gen 8 the writing was on the wall.

But Smogon Revival Tournaments have helped me rekindle my enjoyment of Pokemon. Really almost all of the best stuff Gamefreak did with Pokemon is in the Generations 1-5, with a peak in Gens 2 and 3 and falling drastically, but still somewhat good in gens 4 and 5.
The games posterior to that have always felt mediocre, not exactly terrible but extremely uninspired bland and half-assed.
Perhaps the sprites graphics did a lot of leverage allowing your brain to fill in the gaps, but honestly even the 3D games were good(though more limited of course)
Anyways all of the good stuff with Pokemon nowaydays comes from people who don't have ownership of the IP. The existence of Smogon and fan games is the only think keeping me here.

Game Freak isn’t rushed or underpaid. Game Freak, Creature, and Nintendo are all partners, in fact Game Freak owns more of Pokemon than Nintendo (GF and Creature each have 34% vs Ninetensoms 32). In terms of the main series games, game freak completely calls the shots, they’re just lazy and retarded.
Also half of Beasts of Reincarnation was outsource. And it isn’t even out yet, for all we know the decent graphics could just be window dressing for slop
