I'm coming back to pokemon after playing gens 1-6 and pretty much missing most of the 3ds/switch eras. I played x, or, and us on 3ds and now I've just recently finished sword and scarlet. I also tried legends za but it doesn't really appeal to me beyond mega evolutions being back, so doubt I will finish it anytime soon.Curious what the overall non-redditor reception to the newer games has been. US I thought was great and I'm genuinely sad that I missed being able to play that with other people. I see SwSh get a lot of shit but I thought they weren't that bad. Dumb story, but some good character and mon designs, solid visuals, and I kinda like the cooperative play that comes from the raids. I like that there's a lot of freedom in the endgame to breed/develop your mons, but it still takes some effort to get a perfect IV, perfect EV comp setup. Overall solid quality of life improvements while maintaining a sense of accomplishment. The world wasn't great and was a bit too linear, but I don't really play Pokemon games for dark souls map design.Scarlet however felt awful. Terrible visuals and animations, terrible characters, terrible world, god awful gimmick (tera is by far the worst addition to any Pokemon game) and no investment needed beyond some pokedollars and a couple minutes of EV training for competitive. Yet Ive seen people defending it and saying it's better than SwSh. Are they just dumb? What was the general opinion on gens 8 and 9 here? And are you hopeful for 10? I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will be an improvement from 9 for sure. SV to me just felt like game freak went in the completely wrong direction for the series.

I played through it with my gf and I liked that I could fuck off from most of the plot when I got bored of the story. The only thing SwSh did slightly better than SV was graphics but that's a very low bar to clear and it barely cleared that. Tera raids also easily clear the SwSh raids, despite the jank. SwSh was so dogshit that it almost made me quit interacting with the franchise entirely, but SV, despite the shit graphics and performance, was genuinely fun. I even replayed it, which is something I haven't done since Gen 5. And like you said, SV being better is the common opinion, so you're just wrong. It's absolutely the right direction for Pokémon, it just lacked polish.
scarlet/violet on switch 2 is the best mainline game
