This is my pitch on 15 year old Serena's character for the anime & how to improve her --- Suggestion : Make Serena more lively , playful, optimistic , sassy & genki like an actual idol.-- Con : Its overlaps too much with Dawn's character. Must make Serena stand out as her own character.-- Solution : Lets wrote different type of optimism for Serena.-- Question: Such As ?-- Suggestion: Write her more like a mature playful & overly affectionate Onee-san archetype.with "Ara Ara' pose. Basically Masters Serena with more optimism.-- Question : What about her dynamic with Ash.-- Suggestion : Lets throw out everything from XY/XY&Z series as current Ash & later Ash were nothing like XY Ash. Instead rewrite Ash & Serena's dynamic from scratch.-- Question : How so?-- Suggestion : Serena loves Ash but will not fidget and act shy around him. Instead her character goes the opposite route where she openly flirt with Ash & makes no attempt to hide her feeling to the point of making Ash self conscious and uncomfortable.-- Question : Wouldn't fans find it unnatural?-- Solution : Lets say that when Serena kissed Ash, she lost all her shyness around & find no reason to hide her feeling anymore.-- Question : How would Ash react to it?-- Suggestion : He will get self conscious, annoyed , embarrassed and roast her. He will revert back to his old self from AG/DP series and stop treating Serena like a Princess & treat her like his previous female companions.-- Question : Would fans like it?-- Suggestion: Well , making Ash self conscious is the only way to escape being friendzoned by him..-- Question : What about her character design?-- Suggestion : Neo Champion ponytail with sideswept, glasses , F or J cup bust & mole underneath the lip-- Question : How does she suddenly gets mole underneath her lips?.-- Solution : Character customization & people can develop new moles until they reach 40. The pic are example for the archetype that I think Serena should follow.

Yeah sometimes characters do hit sudden changepoints but you have to really elaborate and verbalize the phase of personality transformation a lot, keeping the actual canon events of the show (both in English and Japanese) in mind to make an educated guess of how a Pokemon anime character would reach that sort of attitude so it would feel like a natural development and not an OOC twist.Making Ash romantically self conscious, in the context of the ashnime, means to revitalize his romantic attitude from episode 9 of Indigo League, the one with Giselle. Basically Ash hitting up on girls would be him awkwardly copying Brock's pickup lines. This is literally what happens in the actual show the only instant it addresses Ash's proactive romantic behavior.Serena promises to literally become a more attractive girl in the last XYZ episodes, so you could play into that.My personal vision of how this could actually happen?I would do a flashback of Ash telling the XY crew about Giselle and getting dreamy for a second, Serena visits Pokemon Tech l, meets Giselle and takes notes on her attitude and uses that info to replicate her self presentation to Ash. It's a bit hard for me to imagine Serena going full mode school queen style naturally so she'd probably be internally a bit awkward about it but if by doing that Serena could get Ash's attention for real then I bet she'd go for it. So we would have this neat scene of Serena tryharding the Giselle appeal in a sorta ironic but not really way and it actually having effect on Ash, and Ash awkwardly using Brock-style pickup lines on Serena also semi ironically but with a bit more genuine subtext.

But Alice is basically Koharu from Journeys.My personal vision is that a girl who could really melt Ash's density down should be graceful and dignified, yes, I do agree with that. I just think that, based on the actual show, such a girl should also be able to combine that grace and dignity with sassy appeal, being a bit of a showoff maybe. But the performance has got to be spicy to get through to Ash. Just like Giselle. However all fan interpretations are equally valid, I actually might be the one missing something crucial. That's why I enjoy discussions like these, seeing all the different opinions on the Pokemon anime gives us a really deep understanding of the show's heart.

Serena's already elegant so the real issue here is how to make her a bit more intimidating while still keeping her character real. How exactly could Serena get that superconfident appeal while still being in character? Well the answer is kinda obvious: assuming she'd be familiar with Giselle she'd realize that she'd need to strike that fragile balance between elegance and sass to get Ash aroused. She'd have Miette and Giselle as references for her self presentation strategy.She'd realize that the reason Miette couldn't get through to Ash is because Miette was overdoing the showoff thing a little bit without backing it up with enough careful elegance. Giselle respectively, managed to balance it perfectly so that even Ash would react.So one hand, we have Serena's natural graceful behavior, Miette's extra sassy behavior and Giselle's perfect balance of both grace and sass. So Serena would try to adopt both Miette's and Giselle's behavior quirks adapting them to her personal style in order to achieve the ideal Ash girl image.
