One of the things I dislike the most about Viz's translation of the RS arc (on top of the countless censors) is how they made Sapphire appear way more retarded than she actually is. There are multiple instances of this, but one of the worst offenders is in PS190 when she has to take a written test at Rustboro.In the original japanese version Sapphire has neither a rudimentary vocabulary nor struggles to read, instead she doesn't know the readings of certain kanji. For those less familiar with japanese, while they have their phonetic alphabets (which Sapphire knows), they instead use kanji to refer to most names, verbs, adjectives etc.Once she's told how a kanji is read, she can understand the questions (and read them) just fine. Viz decided to adapt this by making Sapphire struggle to read normal words and outright making her have no idea what other words even mean, giving the false impression that she's illiterate and genuinely retarded. Right after this scene another one follows where they show her once again in a more negative light than the original.Japanese family names are usually written in kanji. While Odamaki (the Japanese version of Birch) has its own kanji, "Sapphire" is not a native Japanese word and therefore warrants being written in katakana. Sapphire writes her full name in hiragana for the same reason mentioned above, she is not proficient with kanji and is implied to only be able to read katakana but not write it very well.Viz adapts this by making her have messy and unreadable handwriting instead, once again making her look much worse than she actually is.

AniMay, despite some light teases, was clearly designed to ultimately fall for Drew; MovieMay, by contrast, completely contradicts that by how she does the stereotypical gf stuff like pulling away Ash from fights practically with tears in her eyes to calm him down and melt away his anger (and his heart), plus the entirety of the Manaphy movie, Luvdisc scene included. It becomes difficult to reconcile Drew-pilled AniMay clearly having feelings for Ash during that movie especially (and arguably in subtle ways in Deoxys and Lucario too), only to U-turn right back to Drew (albeit taking the ribbon half as a token to always have Ash spiritually with her) once we go back to the show.
