It was important part of its marketing.The thing is that I think that 3D shift actually worked. While they didn't dissapear overnight, as I remeber XY still receiving hate by Kanto fans (specially after megaevolution was revealed and was compared to digimon), they decrease their activity compared to gen V. People were really excited by the shift to 3D. By the time of gen viii dexit, big part of the fanbase was now formed by people who worshipped the very ground gamefrak step in and excused every bad decision they made.Look how times change.
