TWO generations of battle gimmicks in one game (something no game before or since has done). Better move tutors than anything before. The first game with the Defog buff AND availability to Defog. Boss battles with the totem Pokemon. Most other things they did at least as good as gens 1-6. The only thing Gen 6 did better was the PSS, but that was literally the only thing gen 6 got right.

>>59452156Most of it isn't relevant for half the battles. Pokemon with good stats, good abilities, and good movesets are the only difficult parts of the game. Like, only Yawnfag would call Totem Kommo-o hard, but the water and grass totems actually have synergies that actually work and are good like the Game Cube titles. Even Ultra Necrozma is just big number with no real strategy aside from "bring Zoroark". This isn't even getting into the optional and partially systematic power creep that USUM has over B2W2 (where it's less likely you'll have one of the more optimized Unova Pokemon because of the larger Pokemon pool). Like nobody is going to pretend BDSP is harder than DP despite BDSP having IVs, EVs, and AI that actually works because of mandatory affection and a Pokemon pool that making battles easier in general.

SM's writing isn't any better than the gens that preceded it, there's just a lot more fucking writing which makes it a slog. Sometimes less is more.

USUM looks nicer than the 2D games, smart some of the boss Pokemon are clever. But some of them are also like the Dragon trial where you can just OHKO with Fairies. It's ok.

>>59451995You're confusing story with writing. Stuff like character writing is a lot better in gen 7 compared to 1-5 (and 6). You can see that in the leaks too, where every character got a pretty elaborate background story, even minor characters that aren't exactly story-relevant. This is a huge step-up from previous gens, where gym leaders had like 10 lines of dialogue with like 1 implied character trait if you were lucky.
