The jump in difficulty between the main story and the facilities is objectively too high because the game never explains its hidden mechanics in detail. Furthermore, to even stand a chance of winning, you have to fight against RNG with insane odds for breeding. Games like Unlimited Saga were slammed by critics because they arrived in the West without a guide explaining their mechanics, but at least in Japan one existed. For Pokémon, if it weren't for the fans, it would have remained obscure everywhere. Plus, I bet 99% of people playing the facilities back then were genning their Pokémon. A system that inherently requires third party tools and an external community just to be enjoyable is objectively a severe game design flaw.
