How many of you actually participated in events/distributions back in the day?
Pic related, for example – did anyone receive these, then transfer them to Black/White and use them for the Zoroark event?

I've always been mildly annoyed that, despite playing during the time of their release, I never got any of these event Pokémon. I just didn't really keep up with the news or information that was coming out.
>>
>>59456474
I did for some of them.
>>
you still can
use the poke classic network and you can obtain all the distributions, whose wonder cards are still being circulated
the shiny beasts are of a particular annoyance because there were like four regional distributions for them and poke classic has all of them, but you can only receive them once, so the others are just spam and clog up searching for new wonder cards
>>
Yeah I remember doing the ones you listed specifically actually. The Zoroark one was really cool

I’m aware of this, but I’m more curious about those who received events at the time. How did you find out about it? Did you read about it on Serebii etc?
>>
>>59456491
>How did you find out about it?
Pokemon.com I just checked once a week.
>>
>>59456474
I did the second Victini distribution they did during Black/White, also a Porygon-Z C-Gear skin which was super rad because that's one of my favorites
>>

Serebii and Smogon.

Makes sense. Shame I was too much of a tard to have done something similar. For all the time I put into those games, it would have been cool to have some of those event mons.
>>
>>59456493
Oh wait, there was one time I found out from the forums for Transformers Decepticons for the DS.

I actually think I have that Celebi.
I had a couple gen 5 events I looked at in Home and tried to remember what I was doing at the time which made that possible.

This may sound like a daft question, but how old were you when you started doing this? How did you develop that mindset? I do something similar now, but it took me much longer than it should have to start. Sometimes I look back and wonder why I couldn't create or maintain such a simple habit. Perhaps the fact that I have to wonder tells me all I need to know.

Yes.
I even cloned the Space C Deoxys in Emerald and gave some of them away in one of the generals back during XY (but I kinda fucked it up because I didn't know what I aw doing and some people were mad that I didn't have enough).
>>
>>59456474
In Europe the Shiny legendary Beasts were WiFi events, so yeah I got three of each for Pearl, HeartGold, and Platinum.

As for in-store ones I got most of the big ones that got distributed through GameStop in Gen IV-V. Never got any mythicals in Gen III because I believe those were only distributed during Nationals in my country.

I grew up in the American Midwest, so we basically never got any events or Mystery Gifts until they started doing Wi-Fi gifts and/or mass distributing them to Gamestop in the DS era.
>>
Apparently my family tried during the late Gen 3 era, but seeing that I would've been five or six, I couldn't tell you. As for Gen 4, I did get some events, but bizarrely I didn't get the Pikachu Colored Pichu, or the Celebi. I might've gotten the beasts but I can't tell.
Starting in Gen 5, I took them more seriously. I remember getting Keldeo, and nearly missed Genesect due to not getting B2W2 at launch.
>>
>>59456593
PCP is a curse. I have never had the heart to restart my HG save file due to the Notched-Eared Pichu being eternally stuck there.
>>
>>59456474
Gen 3 fucking sucked because not only were they limited to location, they only lasted as long as the employees bothered to keep running them. I missed out on Mew because they """ran out""" of them.
>>
>>59456474
I remember getting these in hgss from a GameStop one town over, it was pretty cool

I went to Burger King in 2000 and went to New York’s Pokémon Store, too.

To be fair unless you heard it from a fellow kid at the playground there was no way a 7 year old would have mystery gift unlocked. Why you needed a secret code to unlock it in the first place is beyond me.

Huh, i dont remember having these particular shiny events but i do remember doing the zoroark event, so i must have got at least one of them
I did pretty much every distribution for the games from platinum through bw2, and most of gen 6 & 7
My favorite event will always be the one with shiny pichu & spiky eared pichu
>>
>>59456474
back when you needed to actually go to gamestop or whatever in person to get an event, I'd just drive there, pull up to the door, get the event from my car, and then leave.

sword and shield had a few events that required a physical code, so I only actually did one of them. the one with genesect, volcanion, and shiny eternatus. i wasn't able to get the shiny miraidon and koraidon becuase the tranny employees literally stole all of them and sold them on ebay.
>>
>>59456557
Not that anon but I used to check serebii's home page every single day when I was in college during gen 5. events barely even feel special anymore unless its something you genuinely just can't get anywhere like victini or celebi. you can get as many mew and jirachi as you want from BDSP, manaphy shaymin darkrai and arceus from Arceus, diancie zeraora and melmetal from ZA, etc...
>>
>>59456717
The line was only 5 to 15 for me, so everyone who wasn't ready was sent to the back.
>>
>>59456738
This isn't a legendary/mythical btw despite having all the properties of one
>>
>>59456491
I read about them here on /vp/.
>>
I remember my friend letting me take his gba and emerald to comic con to get him the ticket to go to the ho-oh/lugia island, but he forgot to give me his charger and I didn't have a gba myself at the time so I played on it all weekend and almost didn't have the battery to actually get the ticket at the booth. It was cool

I've done a few of the gamestop distros too but that one sticks in my mind the most.
>>
i did all of them up until volcanion and then my family stopped bringing me to game stop
i was so excited about the shiny legendary beasts that i held onto the flyer until just a couple years ago
good memories

No wonder Zoroark flopped as a shillmon. Pain in the ass way to catch him just for a limp dick ability and a basic bitch moveset.
>>
>>59457039
the easy and hard modes the game gave you were also really stupid. Gamefreak always makes players run through absolute abysmal dogshit hoops for things that should be standard.
>>
>>59456474
I remember getting multiple copies of all of these because I brought Pearl, Platinum and Heart Gold.
>>
>>59456474
I only did the Mew one. I'm not even sure they did the rest out here. At least not near me.
>>
As far as I'm aware, the local Toys-R-Us was involved in every single event distribution that existed as long as Toys-R-Us was in business. However, I couldn't convince my parents to bring me there to actually buy toys, much less for a DLC event. Needless to say I never was able to participate
>>
>>59456474
I got those, they were at Gamestop. It was the TRU-exclusive ones I often failed to get.
>>
>>59457039
They made more sense in Japan, where you got them in the theater or for preordering a ticket to the Zoroark movie.
>>
>>59456570
The only one I know there is Dick van Dyke
>>
>>59456536
I got this one too and bought X at release, but then after redeeming it decided I wanted to play through the series in order and shelved it. Picked it up a decade later and it was really surprising to talk to the dude in the Santalune City Pokemon Center and hear
>Oh hey, you're Anon? I have a gift for you.
>You received Diancie!
>You received Xerneas!
>You received Yveltal!
>You received Zygarde!
>You received Hoopa!
I was like "Holy fuck what"

They literally just had this problem again with the shiny bike lizards. They only had them as crds for some reason and most if not all places globally ran out within minutes because of scalpers
>>
>>59456474
>How many of you actually participated in events/distributions back in the day?
I participated in everything I could. I even went to the store to get a pokemon. Don't remember which one though.
>Pic related, for example – did anyone receive these, then transfer them to Black/White and use them for the Zoroark event?
I got them but didn't transfer anything. I didn't play past gen 4. They're still in my HG game.
>>
>>59456474
The earliest event mon I remember getting was Victini. I remember attending a different kind of in-person official pokemon event, which must have been some sort of regional competition at least involving the tcg. I don't believe gen 4 had come out yet, so pre-2006. I specifically remember not being able to compete due to the event's level, which was fine because I didn't know how to play the tcg anyway. I was given a free deck and guided in a match by someone who did and remember coming away from the event having enjoyed it, though I never touched the tcg again in any capacity other than collecting. I do not remember any gba pokemon distributions, as I'd have taken part in them. What I do recall is some older, slightly off teenager trading my younger brother a ton of valuable gen 3 pokemon. I was pissed that I received none, but the anger fueled by those trades help me place the event, even if only roughly
>>
>>59456738
Genuinely what the fuck were they thinking doing this? Sure both Lucario and Zoroark had movies though Lucario's was actually good but the thing was, you're actually able to use Lucario in DP without hacking. Can't do that with Zoroark until B2W2, though you're SOL if you want one with your OT for the main game, unless you have BW.
>>59456811
I'm still baffled by how they did the shiny Koraidon and Miraidon events. They release it on the same day as a new TCG expansion, which are known for being scalped to hell and back, only give about 25 of them to stores, and it's a physical code.
>>
>>59456474
I only went to 2 events back in the day: Roar of Time/Spacial Rend Darkrai, and some random Manaphy giveaway.
I had an Action Replay, so I never really cared about getting event mons legit.
>>
>>59458338
Yep, there were only 25 to 50 codes at most stores. I didn't know anything about the tcg release and went with a friend around 11am.
It was a damn good thing I recognized the manager of the store because she gave us 2 codes that were stashed away.
>>
>>59456474
I got most of them. The funniest one was the bottle cap which I got anyway cause why not.

Read about it on Serebii since he used to list which retailers had it for each country.
I then begged my parents to go to malls with those retailers and asked for it. Since I live in a shithole more than half of the times they either had any idea of what I was talking about or tried to scam us by saying they could only give them out for people who pre-order some random bullshit.
I did get at least one of the dogs since I remember doing the Zoroark event. Also got the Celebi.
>>
>>59458179
Gen 3 was worse because there was no actual physical limitations, the distribution carts could do as many mystery gifts as they wanted.

I find it retarded that BDSP had limited time events despite coming out in the modern era.
>>
Went to the Pokémon Championship 2000 Mew event giveaway, got the secret key in Australia where I'd bought my copy of Platinum and got most the online events they've run since sorting their shit out. Even managed to acquire codes for the gated shit one way or another too.
>>
>>59456557
Maybe 20? Started doing it back in gen 6. It was just a convenient way to keep track of whatever codes or gamestop cards were out there.
>>
>>59457632
because gamefreak are literal pieces of shit that are allergic to preserving popular additions and i fucking hate them (raughs)
>>
>>59458179
I assumed the stores would limit each person to one card, so how could scalpers eat up the entire stock of every store?
>>
>>59460683
Released the same day as the Mega Evolution TCG expansion.
Even fucking Reddit of all places said the event was poorly handled.
>>
>>59460683
Because the guy behind the counter doesn't actually give a shit about that "limit", and probably didn't pay attention when he was told about it either.

In-store wireless events were always a fucking pain many places because the guys in the store had no idea how they worked and usually didn't have it turned on, and if you were extra unlucky they assumed it was for customers only and told you you had to buy something before they'd activate it.
>>
>>59460733
What kind of brownoid barren hellstore did you go to?
>>
>>59458338
It's because they wanted to distribute Zoroark as an event-exclusive mon, but since BW weren't out yet, they had to do it through these "transfer these things to the game when it comes out" distros too. They did the same thing with Manaphy for DP, which was even worse since the distro was for Ranger, a spinoff game.
>>
>>59456474
The only in-store one I ever got was during XY when GAME would just print the code on a receipt. My local ones never ran events and the DS didn't like connecting to secure networks.
Getting an Action Replay and later a flashcart with built in cheats to unlock events was fucking magically.
>>
>>59456474
I did. I would go to GAME (RIP thanks Mike Ashley) for codes. For the shiny beasts, they were distributed via WiFi, but my DS was incompatible with the connection type from my family's router, so I went to McDonald's and used their WiFi instead.

None of my friends were free the day I decided to go, so I went alone. It felt weird eating alone, but 15 years later I eat alone so often, it feels weird to be eating with other people.
>>
>>59456474
Living in nyc I always got to go to these distributions
>>
>>59456491
Since I'm not a third worlder or hick, I would hear about events so much it was a wonder years later when other Americans whined about how stupid they were (they weren't).
I subscribed to Nintendo Power, which always announced them. GameStop would have posters and pamphlets announcing theirs, GameInformer would as well, which I also subscribed to.
Serebii would have leaks in advance of the events.
>>
>>59456513
I used to be extremely autistic about event mons and would spend hours a week on Serebii forums trying to trade events with other retards.
I amassed so fucking many of these, 10th Anniversary with various ID numbers, Ageto Celebi and Space Center Deoxys, Mystery Mew, Berry Fix Zigzagoon, Jeremy OTs, and on and on...I assume they're all legitimately obtained since this was before PKhex, but once I realized how easy it was to inject I realized it was stupid pursuit.
Especially because if you got an event mon, you weren't supposed to use it! In your trade list, the custom was to note whether an event was UT, untouched/untrained. Or if it was LT, HT, and exactly what was different from the base form, and if your events weren't UT you could forget about getting anything good for them.
>>
>>59456474
I remember being 16 and asking my mother to take me to a store a couple of towns away to get the Gen IV Darkrai(?) distro. I was so embarrassed - Pokémon was for kids, after all - but we got there and it was all people in their 20s and 30s. Then I was even more embarrassed

Thanks pretty interesting. In a way, I wish I could have emulated you a bit more at the time. I will always feel I missed out a bit by not participating in that aspect of the series. Out of curiosity, do you still have your events mons?
>>
>>59461359
Yeah, it was a fun time and really felt like treasure hunting. You'd get people posting pictures of their game screens to prove they weren't using PokeSAV to fake them, you'd reference against the Serebii event guide for valid info, and so on. You might even say which user traded you which event in a form of like, ownership tracking back to whoever claimed to have obtained it originally. Like you'd see your North American events and that was cool but then you'd have someone offering you one of the multitidues of random Jap crap, or something from a con.
If it was a "first appearance" Pokemon, or the OT was a lore thing, that was even cooler. I think my proudest gets were, E4ALL Manaphy, Theater Distribution Darkrai, Shokotan's Pichu (the Pikachu-colored Pichu that was needed for the Notch-eared event, in Japan they actually had some other Shokotan distros, too) and the complete set of RUBY, SAPPHIRE and Japanese berry fix Zigzagoon. Plus I had half of the Bryant Park 10ANNIV mons.

Still have most of them on Poke Bank (I really should save them before it's too late), having sent them up with everything else.
>>
I dont remember a thing about the event, but I have an event Celebi on Soul Silver, so I guess I went to the Game store when I was a kid.

I started participating in them starting with the shiny Pichu for Platinum to trade to HGSS. Basically that's around when I discovered Serebii and the online Pokemon fandom and could get informed about when events were happening. After that event I kept up with most of them, mostly just for mythical events or shinies that were locked.
