>>59486110Colress:>Colress gave a subtle eyeroll. "There may be different terms here but I'll tell you the ones from my world. Each Pokemon contains a pool of supernatural energy within their bodies we call the Spirit Core. Those supernatural energies that make Pokemon above regular biologics are what we call Corelight. Corelight is channeled into one of eighteen types of Lamina.">"Lamina?" Ian asked. Wait, eighteen? Is that the energy that makes a Pokemon move a certain type? "Like the Type Energy?" Ian asked.>"Type Energy? How crude," Colress observed. "But yes, 'Type Energy,' if that makes it easier for you. A Pokemon may only use a move like Synthesis, Recovery, Moonlight, et cetera, once every few hours. Using moves like those to repair bodily tissue so rapidly is incredibly draining on Corelight. It is why Pokemon often cannot use their most powerful moves in rapid succession. Their supernatural energies, or Corelight, needs to recharge.">"Okay… And what of Z-Moves? Those are vastly more powerful than most moves, wouldn't that drain a Pokemon of its energies?" Ian asked.>Colress' eyebrows rose in surprise. "A good pivot, no wonder you fascinate me so…" Colress paused. "But yes. Z-Moves are spurred by Z-Crystals, which amplify the power of the Lamina and the Corelight. But the amplifier is just that, it's an external amplifier. The Pokemon channels the same amount of Corelight to make the move happen, leaving its reservoir of Corelight likely still very well intact.">Ian nodded. "Okay, I think I get it.">"So Sawsbuck won't be using Synthesis all of the time, and Pokemon Centers are still gonna be a regular thing?" Ian asked.>Colress nodded. "Precisely. The healing machines in Pokemon Centers also rejuvenate the Pokemon's Corelight.">Oh, so this Corelight stuff is basically the real world mechanic for PP in the game. Got it. "Okay, thank you…"t. Anybody else here work on multiple chapters at once? My outlines tend to be pretty vague, and although I think it causes some disconnect with the perspective of the serial reader and it makes editing harder, I like it since it gives me a perspective that makes it easier for me to plan ahead and pace. The worse part is something this causes your plans to change substantially. I guess on that same note, how do you guys feel about reader feedback? I only have one reader who really follows my wip but his insight's always been helpful, probably because he's also a writefag.
>>59486110Technical jargon consists of specialized domain specific terminology used by professionals within a particular field to communicate precisely and efficiently
Would your characters hate you if they were made aware they exist just to be a narrative tool and you made it that way?Would they curse you out? Kill you? Forgive you?
>>59487250Not normally I don't, but I kind of am right now because it's tough getting myself to rewrite a whole chapter from scratch. I had to leave town to visit family and I've made no progress all week KILL MEEEEE- so when I've got time I've been pecking at the side chapter, as well as the following main chapter.
>>59487250I wish I had more active reader feedback as more engagement through comments is always good, but I'm grateful for the little that I do have. It reminds me of when I have to lecture the foundations and survey courses: I have maybe three to five students that I use as a benchmark to gauge whether or not the other 400 are following along.
>>59487304I can’t even post mine I have 14k characters rn and it’s not even close to done
>>59487250I limit myself to writing scenes and fitting them into the outline because i know that if i write later chapters before everything else is done i'd need to do major reworks (as in big edits or even changing a big chunk of the chapter) and i wouldn't be able to stand it (and i'd do it anyway because that's how the story goes and i'd likely get burned out as a consequence of doing that)So no, for my sanity i do not write future chapters, only future scenes
>>59487250>Multiple chapters at onceI organize things into arcs which help makes outlining things reasonable. So I’ll know major events a few chapters out so I get to build it up and make the connective tissue more organic. I think it gives me enough narrative autonomy to be able to switch up the pacing when I think it needs to happen. As far as reader feedback is concerned, it really depends on the reader. It shouldn’t matter who is saying what, it should matter what they’re saying. At the end of the day it’s your story, you know the heart of it. But good, invested feedback that seems to track well with your story is incredibly valuabble for the same reason you’ll never be able to proofread your own work well: you know what you’re trying to say, and can’t know how well others are hearing it.>>59487291I used to write chapters in 10-12 chapter blocks before I started posting prolifically, and I remember I lost like 8 chapters of something I didn’t have a backup for (I learned my lesson, holy shit), and trying to re-write even the first chapter of that sequence was so agonizing I almost gave up writing that story befoore I posted it. Somehow was able to use a different program to open it and get a version I was able to fix up. But it’s why I write on Google Docs and don’t build up a chapter backlog to this day.
>>59487250I'll be honest, this sounds like something an insane person would do and frankly you scare me. So keep it up, I'm impressed. But reader feedback is great even though I usually don't agree with the feedback itself. Its still mentally stimulating.
>>59487250My initial outline is a paragraph at most for each chapter, but I have them planned all the way to the end. There's some brief bits of dialogue and some chapters that are a little more fleshed out than that, but I try very hard to just go through the full chapter outline + prose in chronological order. Writing future stuff would just slow me down even more in the present, and I'm already no the fastest writer in the first place. Other chapters I am not looking forward to writing and trying not to think about until it's required.
>>59487250One chapter at a time, I have an idea but not an outline of future chapters because I have no idea where it'll go. If I get stuck I'll start on the next chapter.
>>59487482Thanks, I just started restructuring a 80% complete finished chapter because of something I did in a previous not 100% finished chapter.
So what do random pokemon talk about when they meet in the wild or are running around in the pokecenter?
Newest chapter of PokeNormal is up because I felt like cutting the chapter earlier than I intended to.https://archiveofourown.org/works/66247705/chapters/239047601Our heroes are tired after dealing with one anomaly after another, and growing more and more irate as they follow a mysterious Pidgey through the woods. Somebody gets punched in the face.
>>59487393>As far as reader feedback is concerned, it really depends on the reader. It shouldn’t matter who is saying what, it should matter what they’re saying.>It shouldn'tI see... well most of the times my comments aren't that insightful I feel, mostly because I'm not prone to being critical and just making observations. Although I get what you're saying, it reminds me of sow.thing I heard about Ender's game, whee the author had his drafts rejected and received feedback on splitting the book up, but that was bad advice. The review correctly ascertained there was a pacing issue but his solution was off.>>59487618Well I'm just about to head to bed so I guess I'm reading that tomorrow. I'm just surprised seemingly every wditefag responded to my comment. That reminds me: I want to thank Pofag for some of the feedback he's given me.In the spirit of trying to leaving better comments, I'll try to bitch more and be more critical to him.
>>59487635>That reminds me: I want to thank Pofag for some of the feedback he's given me.Funnily enough, I’m >>59487393 I assume this is GLFanon. Happy to be of some help for a fellow writefag. I hope I’m not coming across too critiical in my comments. i had what I would say is a hater absolutely roast the fuck out of me a few times, and some of it was completely correct. It pushed me to do better. It caused a few extra chapters in Arc 4, but it’s really made the story better. He went and did some other shit later which was hilariously wrong and out of line.>In the spirit of trying to leaving better comments, I'll try to bitch more and be more critical to himI will say, dropping critical comments is an art. It irks me when people only voice their gripes and don’t even mention things they liked. Obviously the internet is not a hugbox, but 60 chapters deep and the only thing someone has to say is some negative shit rubs me the wrong way. So just don’t be that guy I guess lmao
How many people read fanfiction besides pokemonHow many primarily read non-pokemon fanfiction: I bet its more than most think.
>>59487812I do, Pokémon fanfics tend to lack a certain spark and it's always the same fucking formula >League journey >Edgy league journey >Super mission to save the world le something
>>59487812Only smut desu
>>59487794>I assume this is GLFanonIt’s not, but I do share the same sentiment. I’ve enjoyed your feedback so far, having any kind of feedback makes it easier to improve my work. >>59487812Most fanfic I read is ASOIAF, helps there is a lot more of it. I think I’ve read all the notable Pokemon ones so I don’t have that much to read other than threadfics
>>59487902I try to make my feedback amusing to preserve a light-hearted tone, as I genuinely enjoy making inside jokes with writebros (CCbro has rubbed off on me a lot).I’ll try to be less overtly critical as you’re beyond that intro 3 chapter “tear it to shreds” bit and you’re more in the “this will be addressed in time, gimme some fucking slack” bit. It’s very annoying to get held over the coals with that, especiallly when it’s explained/figured out the next chapter.>ASOIAFBased, Mahogany-bro. I haven’t read any SFW fanfiction of that series but I’m sure I’ll break some day. I’m somehow still holding out hope he’ll finish TWOW, but I already know ADOS isn’t happening. Oddly enough there’ll be some fanfic writer that ends up getting GRRM’s endgame mostly right and that’ll end up being the closest thing we get to a proper ending.
>>59487902>ASOIAFI'm gonna keep it 1000 with you. I have never read a lick of the original, never seen an episode of GOT, I don't even have a clue what the main plot is and who the main character is. And whenever I read a ASOIAF crossover fic, I just treat it like a medieval isekai. Tends to work.
>>59487812Yes and yes. I would read more Pokémon fanfiction but unfortunately this anon is correct >>59487832. I've been reading for about 15 years and somehow the stories coming out today feel like the exact same trash that was common then but even less inspired and more generic. So much of it feels like a mass produced version of putting a little bit of every drink into your cup at a fast food place.>500 page autistic level description of the minute details of every single battle>betrayal fics (I cringe whenever I even see the word)>anime rewrite fics>Arceus chosen one deity nonsense fics>world ending apocalypse fics>le ebil team but actually evil this time fics>Ash is MATURE and SMART and nOt DeNsE fics>alola slice of life fluffslop>Ash disappearing off the face of the Earth to go on giganigger le epic training arc for 10 years for no logical reason>psychically gifted pokémon able to mentally communicate in English that's a thinly veiled author OC self insert>haremslop>revenge fics (another word that induces instantaneous soul crushing cringe)>isekai fics where the author is transported into the Pokémon world slop fics>travelling back in time to SaVe ThE wOrLd>OC self insert slop>Naruto-esque Aura shonenslop>poké-animal abuse>what if Ash but different starter>thinly veiled furry cancer>totally unveiled furry cancer>what if Ash but he has legendary>bodyswap/mindswap of OC into an established character>le human turned into a pokémon>dark souls-esque Victory Road Bear Grylls survival horror>raised by wild pokémon>what if Ash became hermit>entire story written like a tv or film scriptLook I really could keep going here but I'm approaching the character limit. I would read way more Pokémon stories but so very little of it is even any good. You need to develop the skills of an private investigator to find something written at any time in the past few years that isn't total fucking garbage.
>>59487902>Most fanfic I read is ASOIAFI'm a fiend for good Ice and Fire fics. The high quality of the source material helps set the bar for the fanfiction which generally tends to be of good quality. The stories I always find myself gravitating towards are generally:>Eddard x Cersei (usually pre Rebellion AU)>Robb x Myrcella>Rickon x ShireenAnd one that wasn't really on my radar until relatively recently is F/M Aemond x Lucerys, so ether F!Aemond x M!Lucerys or F!Lucerys x M!Aemond. The angst and drama and tension in those stories is something else, good shit.
>>59488022>an private investigatorJust noticed this typo and I'm cringing. I promise I'm not ESL or retarded. I originally just wrote "investigator" and added the word private in after but didn't remember to change an to a.
>>59488087It's too late, I already envision you as the saar and me as the aryan(black)
>>59487794You'd be wrong, and I'm just being sardonic for the sake of comedy, I'd just like to give you and some others better feedback. >He went and did some other shit later which was hilariously wrong and out of line.QRD? Sound funny.
>>59488009>Based, Mahogany-bro.I am GLFanon.>>59488072I've always been more interested in concept fanfics than character ones, so I've never read anything like those before.
>>59487812Me, mostly Touhou, some Star Wars, I'm kind of a sucker for Tanya slop but I never stay with one Tanya fic for too long, then UTDR of course. Oh yeah and some Sonic the Hedgehog and Disco Elysium stuff as well. Basically I pick from whatever well interests me.>>59488022>>59487832It's probably more than sampling bias but maybe try checking out some PMD fics for what CGE has posted. Although I'd be lying if I wasn't guilty of at least some of this. Then again the latter Anon named about nearly every type of fic in the fandom so I'm kind of interested in what you're interested in.>>59488192I guess people have a habit of confusing us. But me too, I don't really go for character pairing fics myself, it's a very female centric-space and it's weird to me. <- Says the waifufag.I've had my idea for a Elden Ring Manga/ASOIAF crossover slop with a bunch of dead randos getting isekaied into ASOIAF but aside from that general idea, and really liking Vyke I don't have any idea of what I'd do there. So a lack of a plot, and the intimidating scope of ASOIAF stops me from writing.
>>59488215>I've had my idea for a Elden Ring Manga/ASOIAF crossover slopI had the idea of writing a crossover between a favourite game of mine ( and ASOIAF myself, I already wrote about 5k words for it but never got around to more of it yet. I wanted it to be a short 70-80k work. But it's on hold (probably forever, because I'd like to revisit my original work later instead). Jumping between fics is a cardinal sin of a web novel or fanfic writer and I'm not going to do that.>and the intimidating scope of ASOIAF stops me from writing. That too is an issue. Some of my earlier works I've written were a lot more ambitious in scope and I realised I was trying to do too much and I frankly didn't have the skill to write it properly.
>>59487812We love reading Worm fanfiction here.
>>59488365>We
>>59488254Well you're more saintly than me, lol. Anyways I guess I have two problems with my Vyke idea, I want Lanssaex to be involved somehow and I don't know how to keep it short.Basically any story involving them is going to spiral out of control, even if I severely limit the PoVs to them and only have the ASOIAF stuff as a background. either way it would be more of a vehicle for an Elden Ring story. I guess my other hang up is that writting fanfic of ASOIAF feels a bit profane somehow.
>>59488401That bastard. *loads gun*
>>59488022>You need to develop the skills of an private investigator to find something written at any time in the past few years that isn't total fucking garbageAlways has been. 1 out of 1000 fics is actually worthy of reading, and it was always like this, buth with time some gems just gain notoriety, creating the illusion that there were "better times"
>>59488470Any fic is good if you "fix" it in your head as you go along. It's good writing practice regardless.
>>59488087Know that problem. Writing entire walls of text only to miss a typo after you reread the entire thing three times.
>>59488087>investigatorDon't worry, you don't have to be a private eye, you just have to be a SELLOUT(s)>He liked movies. They helped distill culture into an easily digestible package. The best ones were the dramas because of how absurd they were to his sensibilities. It seemed the absolute worst thing in this world was to be some kind of urbanite professional without any pokemon driven by some greater vision for the world, as many antagonists seemed to be in the flicks. Some films had absolutely no humans at all and these were the ones that bizarrely, to him anyways, had the greatest moral dilemmas and stakes that were still solved by the power of friendship.>During one of his marathons where he snuck from theater to theater (...) he saw a movie that impressed him greatly. It was called MONICA and it was about an elderly woman who wept every night for her prodigal son while preparing her final will and testament and her mismagius, a pokemon that he studied intensely afterwards, attempting to comfort her. Andy thought it stood out to him just because of how plain it was in comparison to everything else he had seen. The movie was shot in the way documentaries were shot but without the narration, and it was the long, meditative shots on the two figures, the only ones in the whole movie, that made it all the more memorable. He was struck by how much could be said with so few words. Andy turned around at the end of it to see if anyone else appreciated it as much as he did and found the theater was empty.
Unironically thing of writing a mahjong chapter like Akagi on my fic because I'm a lunatic
>>59488822Erika does seem like the sort to play mahjong
Any tips for a ESL who is starting writing? I can understand almost everything I read, but my writing is way far from natural. In other words, I passively have phrases and writing structure hardwired in my brain, but as I write, I can't write down stuff without sounding ESL.
Can any of you actually tell who is who in this thread
>>59488848very rarely
>>59487812I mostly read crossovers and self inserts. Usually Dragon Ball, Mega Man and Yu-Gi-Oh. I kinda miss powerless SIs. You know, those Sis who have to survive and win without any sort of power. They seem to be almost nonexistent nowadays with all those reincarnations and gamer systems.
>>59488848Pofag, IMOfag, CCfag, and SELLOUTS-san are all pretty easy to pin down.Pokenormalfag, CSPfag, and the others are much harder unless they identify themselves.
>>59488832What is the purpose of writing in English if you’re not going to be writing well in English? Not trying to gatekeep, just curious as to why.
>>59488822what about poker?
>>59488832Just say fuck it. Writing is an art, not a science and as long as you aren't massively making spelling typos it won't be an issue.
>>59488848If anything has a hint of woke I assume its IMOfag and if they are complaining about work I assume its CCfag.
>>59488848Pofag usually posts with a shit ton of spoilers and complaining about writingmaxxing, IMOfagfag sometimes has an image and is not without the mention of their PARTNER, Pokenormalfag too has an image and is esoteric as is SELLOTSfag. CSPfag no idea, man just stays down under I guess. CCfag is either not here, drawing his faggy-cursive-tardy drawings or just essayslopping. GLFfag is criticismmaxxing. Spicefag will explain you the various ways to RUIN fox-pussy (or literel pussypussy.)

>>59489095Nah, although he does bother his friends, colleges, family, and dates about SELLOUTS.
Now I'm curious, how do you succesfully ragebait writefags? I don't just mean CCfag.Pofag hates (shoddily done) isekai tropes.Mahoganyfag hates plots that take forever to get to the point.
>>59488365I was just thinking about worms
>>59489124Hey! SELLOUTS' first 4 chapters are infuriating for other reasons than that, and so is IMO's second arc! I was a lot nicer the second time as well. But if you want to know, I really hate shoddily done creepypasta tropes and anything that I see as profane. Like infection AUs and Sonic.exe.But SELLOUTS-san seems a bit hard to rage bait in my experience, and there was that one time an Anon told IMOfag they 'don't believe in female homosexuality'.

>>59487304I always try my best to comment and review chapters, although on the subject of comments on SELLOUTS, I was reminded by a bit of inspiration I took from your fic. When the subject of type aligned drugs came up, it didn't make intuitive sense to me that Dark-type drugs were made as a byproduct of Fire-type drugs since I pair Dark and Psychic types in my mind. That's not a criticism mind you, just something I thought was interesting. It made me start thinking of what the side effects of Psychic-type drug would be, and what the side effects of a matching Dark-type drug would be. The first was rather easy, it improves memory, cognitive function, and psychic abilities in exchange for overtaxing the brain, cause patterns to form easier (basically gives you autism by fucking with your neurology), and causing frequent headaches. So if the Psychic-types drugs over stressed the brain, I thought Dark-types would do the opposite. It would weaken connections made in the brain, make people forgetful, damage brain cells and the connection between them causing a euphoric effect. I was thinking of the side effects of whippets and huffing computer waste.Although both cause brain damage if not used carefully, they have medicinal uses. (Unlike huffing computer waste.)Ugh I felt nasty just writing that, drugs are disgusting. Anyway that little thought experiment was helpful since I was already thinking about the side effects of type energy on the environment when it's hyper saturated with one type in particular and with Dark-types being opposed to Psychic-types the first thing my mind went to was Irrigo from the Fallen London universe. It's a sort of illegal color that takes in memories and in high enough doses kills you and causes bone plates to grow over your eyes.
I haven't posted pkmn fic yet, but of all my time writing I rarely even get 1-3 comments. literally overall 1-3 comments out of my ~6 years on ao3 lmaoBut I don't really care, I write for myself and post it when it's all done
>>59489733I'll comment on your fic. :)
>>59489733Truth, sometimes to get any responses at all I have to dive into discord VC to wring people's necks about it. It's so annoying, but I know Spicefag has had similar experiences.I think the public-author controlled-forum, makes people nervous to comment something that's not glowing praise.
>>59489750Haven't written in like ~4 years :/>>59489751I avoid self-promotion, and I dislike closed-off platforms like d*scord, I just find it very annoying, toxic and "band-wagony"
>>59489762Self promotion is just advertising. Nobody is going to know your fic exists if you don't tell them.
>>59489968I get that, but ultimately I just write to get it out there when I'm done, I don't really care about advertising
>>59489968Not that anon, but I feel like if my story isn't good enough for discussion to organically happen then it isn't worth shilling in the first place.
>>59489980There are certain qualities that have mass appeal, and a fic that doesn’t have those yet wants to be seen is going to need to promote itsellf a bit since many potential readers won’t give it a chance if it’s non-conventional. Shilling ad nauseum to randoms on reddit will do little for you, but sometimes a poster will be looking for something specific, and if your fic hits that criteria then you’re good to shill and you’ll likely get a potential reader out of it (at least in my experience). Also in my experience of reddit shilling, other potential readers will lurk and will give it a chance as well. The fewer times you self-rec the better, honestly (at least be aware how often you’re posting yourself). Getting to the level where other people shill for you (which means you actually have a good story on your hands) is the ultimate snowball as far as engagement goes.
>>59488822>>59488876What places would be betting zones other than the game corners? I like to think you can bet money which trainer will win on the Trainer House from Viridian City
>>59489980That's like expecting a plant to organically produce its own sunlight. No discussion can even happen if nobody knows its exists. You don't got to spam it, but actively avoiding spreading the word on it is self sabotage.
>>59488875Not him, but potential readers are a billion as opposed to millions.
I have a direction I'm going in, but I'm also fleshing out one of the MC's rivals at the moment. It's been eating up the whole writing process tonight since this rival is joining them for the current "arc" and I'm almost at the point where they stop actively despising each other.
>>59490415My MC is his own rival
>>59488192>I've always been more interested in concept fanfics than character onesWhat are some of the good ones you've read?>so I've never read anything like those before. The highest story when sorting by kudos on AO3 is the last pairing I listed and it's fairly representative
>>59488215>Then again the latter Anon named about nearly every type of fic in the fandomThat anon here. That's basically the problem. For the past decade and a half a sizeable portion of fanfiction, I would estimate a majority, has been the same collection of 2 dozen or so ideas, tropes and concepts constantly being recycled constantly - with each individual example being like someone picked 2 to 4 of those at random from an online number generator. There are exceptions, there are stories out there that are of truly phenomenal quality that aren't just the same garbage reheated for the 10 millionth time, but yeah that's the point anon, there is a serious lack of originality and it's not even like this is a trends or fads thing, these elements that have constantly been circling the toilet drain of mediocrity have been circling that drain for approaching 20 years. In a way it's really quite something how long it has managed to go on as such. And I say this not just narrowly focusing on Pokémon in the fanfiction space. It is quite bad not only in and of itself but especially so when you compare it to fanfiction for other things. Fanfiction for few other properties is as creatively bankrupt and of such low quality as Pokémon, and it makes me sad. It is such a rich setting with nearly endless, limitless potential for creativity and storytelling and wonder, but no it's the same slop for the quadrillionth time. It would make me wonder if most of it wasn't AI, but I know it's probably not since it's been like this for coming on 2 decades now, well before generative AI slop was even a thing.
>>59490473>My MC is his own rival
>>59488401This is a nice drawing anon. I like the cross-hatching you did (if that's the right term, idk I did art in school for art history but the actual art part I was never good at). Keep it up!
>>59488470>Always has been. 1 out of 1000 fics is actually worthy of reading, and it was always like this, buth with time some gems just gain notoriety, creating the illusion that there were "better times"Why you gotta be making me so sad on such a nice morning anon? But for real yeah you're right, it's always been a problem, buuuut from my experience of having never really left it for any long period of time and regularly over the years keeping an eye on things, it does feel like it's gotten noticeably worse. The percentages have only shifted a bit, but they've shifted enough to be noticeable. Strangely, and uniquely compared to most other properties, the old FanFiction dot net category for Pokémon seems to have gotten noticeably better through primarily the survival of the fittest, where a higher proportion of the actual good stories have survived and kept getting updated and written for while the worst ones have been more likely to die off. AO3 is noticeably worse if for no other reason than that's where most of them are being posted these days.Even if you take the exact same slop from 10 years ago, with the exact same offenses against writing and quality, that same example today is even worse because of how much time has passed and how little has been learned. Bad food is bad, but it's way worse after years of it with no improvement. Many of the older, more established veteran writers who put out actually good stuff are functional people who have actual lives and can't spend all day writing fanfiction, and unfortunately many of the people who do have enough time to be writing all day are non functional retards and freaks and it shows in the end results.

>>59490415It may feel like these moments are delaying the writing process, but actually they ARE the writing process. Inserting a half-baked characrer with no real plan for them (espeecially if they’re around long term) will just drag down any scene/arc they’re involved in. It just sucks that you don’t feel like you’re making progress on an individual chapter.
>>59490533>Whether or not it's slop is to be determined after I finish and post it somewhere.hey, there are worse things out there
>>59490506Well fanfiction is derivative fiction and I imagine most do it either out of some promise fort internet fame, or because they're writing for their own sake. Probably a little bit of both, then like all mediocre works you have the problem of the people who produce them only studying their subject.Fanfic writers who only read fanfic and thus only write fanfic-like material. There is also a pretty low bar to entry,Although I don't take the claim that this is unquie bad for Pokemon seriously, as I have heard the same thing said about every other fandom and property in existence. Myself I got into fanfic writting out a hobbyist desire to have something to do for fun, but if there's something you really want, that's really different from what most of the fanfic scene makes, and you don't care about fame, I'd say try writting something yourself. It doesn't have to be long or serious, maybe you'll find something to enjoy in the process.
>>59488022>neither PokeNormal or Crystal Light fall under these descriptions Feels good man dot jpeg.

>>59490871>Fanfic writers who only read fanfic and thus only write fanfic-like material. That's the real issue which baffles me. Rather than try something new and risk failure in one of the safest environments it seems like most writers just have monetization in mind and churn out the safest of slop.
You know what's funny, readers seething when you use a canon character for anything that isn't a power fantasy or isn't following canon but "better".Like years ago I read a DxD story that was using the world building (as lame and swallow as it is) without the endless tournament arcs and readers were seething because or the MC wasn't Issei, didn't want a harem or didn't get the strongest cheat ever.Or for those familiar with RWBY, a fanfic without Jaune wanking isn't a RWBY fanfic

Can battles be avoided by attacking the trainers directly (like in ZA), or is this not possible for some reason? If it's the former, how can trainers avoid being taken out?
>>59491198ESCALATION
>>59491198I had a concept where if the Pokemon of Trainer A had Trainer B in a vulnerable pposition and the Pokemon of Trainer B either didn’t have a similar position on Trainer A or was unable to prevent Pokemon A from hurting/wrecking Trainer B, the battle would end with Trainer A’s victory. It was supposed to prevent every fight from going a full 6v6 and added way more tension throughout as the battle could end anytime. This wasn’t in any sort of organized pro/league battles, but in basically glorified street fights.
>>59491198>"Bwuh... w-what," the rocket stammered. "That's not... you're not supposed to attack me! That's not fair! You didn't even let me finish speaking!">"Cry about it. I feel like I'm held back by this common sense that says it's pokemon fic so the protagonist must have or be a pokemon.Even though there's a million romance/ship fics where pokemon are barely the focus.Should a Pokemon be a tool that the human character uses or a character in and of themselves?
>>59491407The question is for the readers. Do you want to read a fic where the pokemon are tools or characters?
>>59491408nta, but I feel like it's the opposite, write what you want to write first and foremost. Although personally I prefer as if pokemon are characters.
for GLFanon, when will this guy appear?
>>59491407It depends on the story of the fic itself I’d say. If it’s *generic journey fic #79,381 about the MC and their Pokemon overcoming hardships and being the very best* then yeah, the Pokemon should be full blown characters. If it’s a very plot-focused story that isn’t just *the MC and their team wants to be the very best*, that has a deeply explored setting wiith actual conflicts that also holds a large cast of human characters, then not every Pokemon will get to be a full blown character or else the pacing will just get completely fucked as there’s just too much going on (like this run-on sentence for example). I’ll mention that PokeNormal is a wonderful fic, but I don’t think we’re getting a full blown character arc for Poochyena as the exploration of the setting and setting-spanning mystery is the main focus of the story, and I din’t think the story suffers for it.I guess a better way of saying it is if the story is not going to have most of the Pokemon be full blown characters (meaning they’re basically glorified tools instead), it better really do other stuff well.

Which writers here use google docs to write their stories? If you do, how many chapters ahead are your google docs compared to what you've posted? And do you also write your outlines and plans in google docs?
>>59491950I just use normal Notepad (default that opens with your PC files), and for outlines/plans, I write details on a separate notepad (or in the same document if the story is short enough)
>>59491950I use googledocs because I write from multiple devices and I'm about a chapter and a 3/4ths ahead on both of my stories. I always make sure to backup all my writing to my computer whenever I'm done with a chapter for the day.
>>59491950I use word. My future chapters section is the rough outline. It's an agglomerate of scene snapshots, maybe only a few sentences long, that I transcribe from whatever scraps of paper that are at-hand throughout the day when an idea strikes.
It's funny, I'm right at the beginning of what I think will be the final arc of this story, but my mind is already coming up with "one off" adventures that could happen after it's over.
Any fanfics about Pikachu in distress? They don't have to be too crazy, in fact I kind of prefer the ones that are more subdued, but just anything where Pikachu is sad, confused, and unhappy will do. I'd prefer if its distress was prolonged, but any length of time is good. Anger is also fine. Obviously, helplessness is ideal, but I know how unlikely that is, so whatever's available is fine really. I've already read Pikabuse.

>>59492508I mean ai companies already scrape AO3 for shit, so I don't really care either way. If you want spoilers for a fic just ask.
>>59492815No wonder they're getting worse
>>59491950Google docs, I'm rarely more than half a chapter ahead. Usually I finish a chapter and post it as soon as I've done editing. >>59492493Oh boy. Where can I read it? Please tell me right away.
I was thinking about writing a fanfic. here's a short version..-Bulbasaur had never understood why his life was different from the others. When he and his friends, Charmander and Squirtle, were brought to Professor Oak's laboratory, they were supposed to become part of an important research project. At first, Bulbasaur believed they were simply being studied. But as the experiments continued, he began to realize that something was terribly wrong.Oak and his staff subjected Bulbasaur to repeated procedures designed to alter his biology. His body was pushed beyond its natural limits, and every experiment left him weaker, more frightened, and increasingly resentful.Meanwhile, Charmander and Squirtle seemed to live much better lives. They were treated with care and allowed to grow normally while Bulbasaur remained trapped in the laboratory, subjected to experiment after experiment.Over time, resentment became hatred.During one particularly painful session, Bulbasaur finally snapped. As the researchers approached him, he released a massive cloud of Poison Powder. The laboratory staff had no time to react. One by one, they collapsed.Bulbasaur didn't wait to see what happened next.He escaped. For the first time in his life, he was free. The authorities quickly learned that the Pokémon responsible for the incident had escaped, and soon police officers and their Pokémon were searching the surrounding areas. Bulbasaur fled through forests and abandoned paths, avoiding humans whenever he could.Along the way, he encountered wild Pokémon who attacked him, forcing him into fights he desperately wanted to avoid. Then he met a Scyther. The battle was brutal.Bulbasaur fought with everything he had, but Scyther was faster and more experienced. One of its blades tore across Bulbasaur's body, leaving behind a deep wound that immediately began to bleed.Bulbasaur staggered backward. He was exhausted.Desperate.
>>59493069He looked around and noticed several Pokémon nearby. With no other choice, he used Leech Seed. The seeds latched onto the surrounding Pokémon, allowing Bulbasaur to slowly drain energy from them and restore his own strength. It wasn't enough to heal his wounds completely, but it kept him from collapsing. Then, from the edge of the forest, someone noticed him.A Lilligant. She immediately recognized how serious his injuries were and rushed toward him.Bulbasaur watched her approach suspiciously. He expected another attacker.Instead, she looked at his wounds with concern. She knew he needed help—and quickly.Lilligant turned and ran to find someone who could treat him.But she didn't get far.A familiar Pokémon appeared in her path.A Wartortle. And standing beside him was Blue.Lilligant froze when she saw Blue and his Wartortle. She didn't have time for a battle. She desperately tried to communicate that she wasn't looking for a fight, gesturing toward the forest and attempting to convince Wartortle to let her pass. But Wartortle couldn't disobey. He was following Blue's commands.Every second Lilligant spent trying to escape was another second Bulbasaur remained wounded. She struggled harder, refusing to be captured—not because she feared for herself, but because she needed to return to the injured Pokémon she had found.
>>59493071Back in the forest, Bulbasaur continued draining energy from the Pokémon affected by his Leech Seed.Slowly, his strength returned. His wounds began to close. When he finally recovered enough to stand, he remembered Lilligant. She had tried to help him.He had no idea why.No one had ever helped him without expecting something in return. Then he heard the sounds of a battle.Bulbasaur followed them. The closer he got, the more familiar the sounds became. He eventually reached a clearing and stopped.Standing across from Blue was Wartortle.Bulbasaur stared at him. There was something familiar about that Pokémon. Then it hit him.Squirtle.His old friend. The same Squirtle he had once shared a home with before Oak's experiments changed everything. But Squirtle was no longer a Squirtle. He was a Wartortle now.Blue ordered Wartortle to attack. The battle began.Bulbasaur fought desperately, but Wartortle had the advantage. After all, Bulbasaur was already exhausted from everything he had endured. Then Wartortle used Ice Beam. The attack struck Bulbasaur. He collapsed. His body was too weak to withstand another battle.Wartortle seemed almost proud as he stood over his former friend, showing off the move he had mastered.Lilligant, who had managed to escape Blue's attention, finally returned. She saw Bulbasaur lying helplessly on the ground.Without hesitation, she used Sunny Day.The sunlight intensified across the battlefield.Bulbasaur suddenly felt something change inside him.His body became lighter. His movements became faster.Lilligant stared at him in surprise.Bulbasaur had activated Chlorophyll.Neither of them had known he possessed the ability.Bulbasaur immediately took advantage of it.He used Synthesis.Under the powerful sunlight, his wounds rapidly healed.Blue and Wartortle could only stare.Bulbasaur was no longer struggling to survive. He was ready to fight.
>>59493073And with his newfound speed, he overwhelmed Blue's entire team before they could react. One after another, Blue's Pokémon fell.Eventually, Blue himself and his Pokémon were unconscious.Bulbasaur turned toward Lilligant. For the first time, neither of them said anything. They simply ran. They didn't get far.The sound of approaching police sirens echoed through the area.Bulbasaur and Lilligant stopped when they realized they had been surrounded.A pack of Growlithe emerged from the trees, blocking every possible escape route.Bulbasaur looked around. There was nowhere to run.For a moment, he accepted that this was how it would end. Then one of the Growlithe began harassing Lilligant.Bulbasaur's expression changed. He had spent his entire life learning not to trust anyone. He had been experimented on, hunted, attacked, and abandoned.Yet somehow, watching Lilligant being threatened made something inside him snap. Before he could think, Bulbasaur attacked. He struck the Growlithe violently and grabbed Lilligant with one of his vines. Then he ran."Quick! Use that move you used earlier!" Bulbasaur pleaded.Lilligant understood immediately."Sunny Day?""Yes!"She hesitated.Sunny Day would strengthen the Fire-type attacks of the Growlithe pursuing them. But Bulbasaur didn't care.He trusted her.Lilligant used Sunny Day.The sunlight intensified, and Bulbasaur's Chlorophyll activated once again. The two Pokémon sprinted through the forest. They were faster than the Growlithe now.Much faster. But the pack refused to give up.Bulbasaur pushed his body to its limit, running until his legs ached.Eventually, the forest opened up.They found themselves standing at the edge of a cliff.Below them was a rushing river.Bulbasaur stopped.
>>59493085Bulbasaur remained hidden. Then his bulb began to glow.He started absorbing the smoke through his bulb.Gastly and Gengar didn't understand what he was doing. The smoke began swirling toward Bulbasaur. Then something unexpected happened. The Ghost Pokémon were pulled toward him as well.Bulbasaur's bulb sucked in both Gastly and Gengar. The two Ghost-types struggled desperately.Bulbasaur held on.Then, with the last of his strength, he blasted them out of the tower. The two Pokémon disappeared into the distance.Bulbasaur collapsed. He was completely exhausted. But he didn't even have time to rest.A loud screech echoed through the tower.Bulbasaur slowly looked toward the damaged wall. The Fearow from earlier had found them.A whole flock surrounded the upper floor. They had followed Bulbasaur all the way there. The Fearow mocked him. They circled overhead, taunting him and reminding him of every battle he had lost.Bulbasaur tried to stand. His body refused. He was tired.Everywhere he went, someone attacked him.Every time he tried to trust someone, something went wrong.Humans rejected him.Pokémon attacked him.He had been hunted, experimented on, injured, and abandoned.Even the few Pokémon who tried to help him seemed destined to be dragged into his problems.Bulbasaur lowered his head.Maybe this was simply who he was.Maybe he was destined to keep running forever. Then he heard something.
>>59493087A voice.Quiet at first.Almost like a whisper inside his own mind."Evolve."Bulbasaur lifted his head.He looked around. No one had spoken. The Fearow continued laughing. Then the voice came again."Don't let them feel victorious."Bulbasaur didn't understand. He didn't know where the voice was coming from. But he could hear it.Clearly.The Fearow began their attack.Bulbasaur braced himself. Then—His body began to shine. The Fearow stopped.Bulbasaur's body changed. His fangs grew longer. His claws became larger. His ears sharpened. His limbs became stronger. The small bud on his back began to bloom.Light engulfed him.The Fearow recoiled. When the light finally faded, Bulbasaur was gone.In his place stood something new.Something stronger.Something that had been waiting inside him all along.Ivysaur.And for the first time, the Pokémon that had spent his entire life being treated as an experiment stood on his own.He was no longer the weak Pokémon they remembered. He was ready to fight.might contiue later

It would require a greater tonal shift, and since PokeNormal is a celebration of weird things in older official and unofficial media it serves the story better to stay close to the main series tone. Also I wanted to deny it but thinking on it further the Supernatural influence is pretty clear. Dad's Journal was probably subconscious inspiration for the File Cabinet even though they have barely used the file cabinet at all. I wonder if Poochyena is Dean or Sam...
>>59494494I think Poochi is more like a rock, he even gets thrown at things.
>>59494303Funniest possible route is implying off-hand that everybody IS calling their Pokemon nicknames, and the reader just isn't getting to hear them.
>>59494494It was an enjoyable read overall. The only exception was the rotom car adventure. That segment felt too long and the risk felt low so I didn't like it very much.
>>59494494Will you be adding Omegaverse elements to your fic in light of this new information?
>>59494556Don't we already have an Omegaverse fic with IMO?
>>59493089Please paste it into a rentry if you do.https://rentry.org/
>>59494220It's to say that the trainer cares about their pokemon's feelings/opinion, which according to the anime is not a guarantee. But i kinda get what you mean, it makes sense to have that exchange, but also everybody does it so meh
>>59494259I could always just assasinate them and say i'm sorry
Question, how do you feel about implying that there was an Isekaijin in the past but never confirming or commenting on it.I think it's funny, also how would you go about implying something like that, my current idea is a pokemon who's name was recorded in history is that of a Norse god.
>>59494620I think there was a scene in the anime doing that already?
>>59494620>SpoilerI don't think that would be enough of a clue for people to deduce that since people might already be used to random anatopism.
This chapter is still killing me.
>>59494620Did he die to a pidgey since his body wasn't as strong as a native because he didn't cultivate his aura?
>>59494620As long as the lore is interesting and can be deduced, you’re fine. Leaving little nuggets of cool lore really rewards close readers. As someone who’s been dancing around Isekai-jin in the past of the story, finally dropping some of his lore was really cool. It makes the world feel really lived in.>>59494824When you finish this chapter you deserve to reward yourself, idk with whhat. Usually I do a two day bender for my hardest chapters.
>>59494864IMOanon can't afford a two day bender you fucking Australian, she has a business to run.
>>59494922Every business owner I know only copes with the stress by having crazy ass benders or being crazy religious. The funniest place to work at had lines of blow on the manager’s office desk most days.[/spoiller]
>>59494595sure manthank you for taking time in reading that
>>59494556Adding?
>>59494620I'm intending to straight up replace one of my characters halfway through the fic with an isekaijin randomly taking over their body. See if you can spot it when it happens.
>>59494220Has there ever been a fic with a Pokemon that didn't like to battle?
I finally managed to finish writing a scene in my second chapter that I've been stuck on for literal months. The chapter is now 13000 words. I'm probably only 2/3rds done with it. Still, feels good to move past that roadblock.Do you guys ever get stuck on things for an unreasonable amount of time? I feel like 6 months to write 400ish words is kind of insane.
>>59495095I'm writing one, but I don't know if I've read one so far. The ethics of the setting do kinda rely on pokemon loving battling
>>59495095I'm also writing one, and I really don't get why it's not a thing in more fics. What's wrong with a Chansey who just likes to heal and look after the group? Why do they always have to be a BAMF tank who seismic tosses her enemies? I get it, le funny smogon meta, but still. Not every pokemon has to battle, and protagonists tend to have such an advantage that they don't need a full team of battlers anyways.
>>59495095I think i remember reading a couple, but i'd need to search their names because i don't even remember which ones they were.Smut of course.
>>59487832>>59488022I've found for me that the "spark" most Pokemon fics lack is any respect for the thing. I've read a lot of fanfics and while yes, most fanfics are terrible no matter the fandom, in most fandoms you can still tell the authors like what they're writing for. They get the general tone, they're fond of the characters, it's evident that they're writing fanfic because they want to write more of this fictional universe that they like. But Pokemon fics? Most of them are written like a bad Netflix adaptation. Where the author's just using the biggest franchise in the world as a backdrop for his totally original story to get more eyes on it, or he's deeply embarrassed about how Pokemon is rated E for Everyone and needs to scrap all that to fit his totally mature sensibilities (usually by turning everything edgy or boringly bureaucractic). Pokemon's one of the only fandoms I can think of where the biggest problem I face when trying to find a quality fanfic is finding one written by an author that seems to actually like the fucking series they're writing for in the first place. The weirdest part is that this has never really changed. It's taken on different forms over the years, but it's been like this since the beginning of Pokemon fanfic and it's still a consistent thing decades later.
>>59495454>in most fandoms you can still tell the authors like what they're writing forThere's a surprising amount of people, maybe not fanfics, in the star wars fandom who try to be a little bit too clever about the Dark Side. It's a bit annoying and I don't really get it, but I think it arises from the same impulse, where instead of loving a franchise, it's just lore and a backdrop for the user's power fantasy.
>>59495454Honestly, I think most things with an active fanfic community are either very flawed or have a very limited (usually childish) tone. People then want to write fanfics to "fix" those issues, or at least address them.Pokemon, for example, has mediocre writing at the best of times, extremely self-contradictory lore, and a tone that is generally cartoony and optimistic but occasionally forays into some weirdly dark places. Edginess is a natural result of people wanting to address things that a children's game series is never going to bring up, while bureaucracy fics (people keep saying these exist for pokemon but I've never actually read one) are usually a result of authors trying to fix poorly thought-out worldbuilding.Ultimately, pokemon is bad. However, because the central idea of magical monsters who want to battle and be our friends is so compelling, people want to write their own stories in that world rather than be restricted only to the Nintendo Approved Family Friendly Tone™ and two-dimensional characters we do have.t. Garbage fanfiction writer

What would be the Top Domain Levels of website addresses in the pokeworld, regarding regions (.uk, .us, .fr), organisations (.gov, .org) and general names (.com)? Would they be completely different or similar?
>>59494037>a pokemon call it's trainer "Master"but you literally gave them orders, it's a servant-master relationship. Sure, they can get unruly but they're still under you
>>59496060You think "master" is bad? How about "daddy"?
>>59496124Well don't most starter/trainer pairing start out with the trainer being older?

>>59496124I hate that I am autistically firm about 99% of Pokemon not being able to speak English, because that is a kink I greatly appreciate and never once considered fitting adjacent to Pokephilia. Maybe a Gardevoir (moon-descended, big eyed, small mouth Grey-looking motherfucker) with experience in Telepathy and zero shame. That feels about right.

New PoPT chapter for those who partake. Had to split this chapter up a little as there's just too much going on. This time with more Teddy Roose- I mean Beaumont speeches.https://archiveofourown.org/works/66210784/chapters/239961716
>>59496467Also bows on the hair analogue and lots of 'I've been a bad Pokemon' and maybe stockings and so on. Full on DDLG with an older male trainer. Why not?I'm still trying to unfuck chapter 30.
>>59496507Have the male trainer be grossed out but eventually get into it as well.
>>59496187She's right though.
>>59496341Probably why they have stopped using words. They are probably getting auto banned or something and is too cowardly to speak his love for his waifu despite the consequences.
>>59496529Nonono, that's too mainstream and pussy-anime-protagonist leaning. A genuine grown ass trainer with a bit of lovehandles and a potbelly doting on the Gardevoir chastisingly while also having zero reservations about physically repositioning her is more fresh and novel. Could open with a business meeting or conference, and then contrast that usual (slightly charged) Pokemon-trainer dynamic with them going full kinky mode behind closed doors and reveling in it.Anyways, back to writing.
>>59496578I like the way you think.
fic idea: trainer with a Vicitni or a Pokemon with Super Luck ability that wins every battle because they're lucky. Think of Mr. Satan from Dragon Ball
>>59496588No way one would obtain a Victini, maybe a "usual" pokemon with "Super Luck", sure (since most would underestimate it)
>>59492789Mario without his hat is WEAK though, at least in the 3D games.
>>59496593>No way one would obtain a VictiniThere was a background character with a Heatran in the anime
>>59496655I love the implication that Heatran, at this point, is so rare and unknown that nobody even realizes its a legendary. The guy himself might not even know. I like to think he stumbled upon it and Heatran decided to go with him 'just to see how this all plays out.'
>>59496593you can if you're lucky
Green is so cool. I love her so much.
>>59496588This sounds like the peerfect mythical for the “Konosuba but in Pokemon” fic that keeps bouncing around here.
>>59496740An undefeatable trainer sounds more like Reinhard from Re:Zero
>>59496757That should be more a trainer with the unique ability to develop (or make his pokemon develop) any Ability he/they might need, at any time. They should also have a Charizard, because it would only be right.
>>59496588We've already had two animes with this premise and they didn't even need Victini or a Super Lucky pokemon
>>59496857???
>>59496813A bad trainer with plot armor tier of good luck is a much better fit yeah
>>59496021.pk
>>59488822Good luck, part of the writing for Mahjong is that you need to know how people would actually deal with hands. Akagi likes to throw in mind games and keep you guessing. Sometimes you get to see Akagi's hand, other times you don't. Aside from that, I know that trying to write Mahjong is harder then having a visual representation. Manga/Animation is the better medium for it, no doubt, because it allows you to build up the suspense properly. You might be able to get some of that across in your writing, but don't be surprised if someone looks at it and just wonders why you bothered.
>>59496974Just having to write down the hands and what the discard pile looks like would be difficult for readers to keep track.
>>59488822>>59496974That reminds me, there was this Touhou Majhong doujin I really liked called "The Tiles That I Cannot Cut Are Next to None!" Maybe you should check it out, it could help.

>>59497876Yes, twice actually. He rebounds to the painter girl from SM, she leaves him for her old bf. He then rebounds to Plumeria but she leaves him for Guzma, or more specifically she wants to keep herself open for Guzma.
Yesterday or the day before, a (non-Derry) coworker told me how she liked piplup, so I thought yeah, I will draw a bb piplup for one of the few chill coworkers I got. Also done with the sketch phase of wetsuit Clair, but at work rn so I can't post that now.
