Gen 5 buckbroke the fanbase, they weren't willing to let go of Kanto so Gamefreak overcorrected by going all out on Kanto shilling in XY and Sword/ShieldGen 5 designs are mostly trash, people did not mind using the new Gen 4 and 7 Pokemon; even Gen 3 back thenEven the Switch titles people were more receptive towards the new Pokemon over just Kanto shilling so it really came down to Pokemon designs
