Gen 2: Epic final showdown with Red. Closure to the Tajiri era.

Gen 4: End of the Japanese era.

Gen 5: End of the 2D era.

None: Consoom slop 4ever.
>>
>>59514928
gen 5 most obviously
But I would say give gen 7 a shot since it's the only 3D game
Some modern side games are also good, but for mainline it's definitely gen 5
>>
>>59514932
>since it's the only 3D game
only GOOD 3D game** my bad
at least in my opinion anyway. The gif of Xerneas using a Z move kicks the game in its shins tho
>>

Consoom forever, what the fuck else are you going to do?
>>
Between those options, 4 or 5. I'd also like to add 3, the Advance era was the best in my opinion in terms of pure videogames/pokémon.

Gen 6 is the last acceptable point playing pokemon. The cracks were really starting to show here. Not jumping off at this point is just masochism.

X and Y were hilariously bad and ORAS was an insult to RSE I feel
Im curious why you choose gen 6 in particular. Other than maybe megas and fairy typing
>>

Because Gen 7 is an exercise in torture and Gen 6 at least had a well-functioning online ecosystem, I assume.

Nope. Didn't play Gens 8 or 9 after all the handholding we had in Gen 7. Also Dexit.

As for the games I've been playing since, they're definitely not slop. That said, you and I both know that I could name any game and no matter how stupid you would look, you would claim it's slop anyways.
>>
>>59514928
Gen 4 is the end of actual Pokemon in general. Everything after is poor fanfiction.
>>
>>59514928
I enjoy Pokemon so I'll just keep playing so long as I keep overall enjoying. I make decisions on what to buy or not to buy but new gens are my primary enjoyment so I'm always buying one of those for the foreseeable future.
However Gen 3 was going to be my drop off point. That's where I naturally lost interest. Ruby was enjoyable but then you have to wait and other things crop up to grab your attention. 3rd versions don't add enough. And FRLG was a hard pass at the time. By the time Gen 4 was getting announced and released, I had stopped caring about Pokemon for years. Unfortunately younger family members kept pestering me to play Pokemon with them and I eventually caved so my addiction resurfaced but I'm sure there's a lot of older fans whose last handheld was the GBA so they gave Gen 3 a chance but weren't hooked anymore.
>>
If you have to ask that question on this of all places, then I think you're here forever. I'm sorry. Lmao.

Gen 2 was THE stopping point for most people that grew up with original Pokemon. Many eventually came back for PoGo, XY, SM, or one of Switch games. You're never truly gone.

gen 4
>you fight God
one of the many problems of newer generations is trying to make something bigger than god and it's fucking retarded. They had a working and organic hierarchy for legendary pokemon up to gen 4
>>
>>59514928
Best answer: never, because every Gen has valuable and enjoyable aspects and seeing the changes and additions over time never stops being at least a little magical

Not a cop-out answer: finish with Gen 2. Gens 1-2 are the original vision and everything from Gen 3 onward, regardless of how good some games may be, have cut something from that original vision or content that had been built up.

>>
>>59514928

I was always of the opinion Gen 5 is the first bad generation and Gen 7 is the last good one. Any game between BW and SM is a fine stopping point.
But if we are talking best jumping off point, there really is no point in playing these games past HGSS.
>>
>>59518803
>this drastic lazy downgrade to the BF that replaced all the challenge with lazy nostalgia pandering felt like a final sendoff
yeah true. Great indicator that the franchise was now dead.
>>
>>59518754
Thinking you must have misread. Every single gen has good qualities. I love Gen III, one of my favorites, Emerald is a top 5 Pokemon game. But the objective jumping off point, if there is one, is Gen II simply because it’s the original Tajiri era, pre-TPC, pre-style guide, and it was the original plan to only do Gens I and II.

3.

4 brought us / started
>a) insane power creep
>b) physical/special split, because everyone has to have a medal (medal = strong stab moves)
>a)+b) combined to shift the balance from fairly evenly poised between defense and offense to ALL OUT OFFENSE
>babbified doubles to cater to casuals, by preventing new mons coming in mid-turn. that made it more forgiving for newcomers. same as every other franchise, they make the gameplay less hardcore and more n00b-frenly for more shekels. look at how quickly tekken 3 rounds used to finish compared to tekken 8. 8 gives way more leeway to gather your composure, change tactics, and successfully mount a comeback (per round) if you get your ass kicked at the start.
>the trend of awful, charismaless legendaries and mythicals (all gen 1-3 legendaries and mythicals had sovl, gen 4 and onwards ones have been mostly soulless)
>while the dropoff hasnt been as bad as with the legendaries/mythicals, the starters as an overall average have been significantly worse than the gen 1-3 average
>new evolutions that were a huge mistake
>STEALTH ROCK
>focus sash
>and you needed to buy a whole new console for all of these '''upgrades'''

Yeah, Gen 3 was the perfect end chapter.
>>
>>59520955
Gen II is the DMC2 of Pokemon, largely completed by Junichi and belonging to no one.
>>
>>59520995
you can't blame Gen IV for Gen IV OU being shitty
>>
>>59520995
Most of that shit started with Gen3. Powercreep, everyone getting the same moves, competitive doubles, shitton of soulless legendaries, it all starts with Gen 3 and only gets progressively worse in later generations.
Gen 3 is also the first dexit and what killed pokemania so in a way, I agree. Gen 3 was the end chapter of the franchise.
>>
>>59514928
HGSS. There’s a massive nosedive in quality immediately after.
>>
>>59514928
None, every Pokemon game has something of value worth experiencing
With the exception of Sword and Shield of course.
>>
>>59521055
gen 3 didnt have power creep. most of the mons introduced were absolute shitmons. cute and cool but battle-wise garbage. 'The Hoenn Special'.

Of the powerful mons introduced:
The legendaries/mythicals were in line with previous ones, at least in terms of stat totals.
Two 600 BST 3-stage 'dragon' mons (Salamence, Metagross). In line with Dragonite and Ttar.
Starters in line with previous starters.
Slaking tempered by Truant.

Did movesets for previously existing Pokemon significantly expand? I don't think so. But even if they did, pre-phsyical/special split many mons had their power tempered by having their stab attacking stat be weak compared to their non-stab attacking stat. Kept things balanced, most mons couldn't just one-shot a bunch of other mons because of that.

Gen 3-to-4 power creep and metagame disbalancing was way worse then Gen 2-to-3.

Every mon got a significant degree of one-shot power because the physical/spec split gave every mon at least one powerful stab attack coming off their dominant attacking stat.
Add Choice Scarf to the mix, and that extended the one-shot capabilities to even more mons. At least without Scarf, you'd take a hit first. But when you give so many mroe mons the chance to move first, with potential one-shot power, it kills the fun.

Arceus shattered the base stat total ceiling and was practically unstoppable with its insane unpredictable versatility (any type u want bro).

Stealth Rock massively nerfed those weak to rock, basically killed viability of those double-weak to rock.
>>
>>59521094
forgot to add

Arguably some powercreep in two places
1) Lati@s with Soul Dew, arguably. But didn't most fan regulations ban it? And it was disabled in the Battle Tower/Frontier.
2) Kyogre with the rain arguably overpowered, as it could easily 1v1 Ho-oh and Lugia who on paper should be its equals (base stat totals).
But Mewtwo not so easy to 1v1, Mewtwo fast, could hit with Thunder first and/or stat boost + recover.
Setting alternative weather (Groudon, Ttar, Sunny Day, Hail, Sandstorm) also a viable way to counter it.

But Gen 4 powercreep still dwarfs whatever powercreep Kyogre/Lati@s brought.
>>
>>59521055
>"SFMA XD meme" region
>"powercreep"
don't let the glut of Johto shitmons distract you from the fact it also had non-legendaries with base 140, 135, 255, and 200 stats

>it all starts with Gen 3
completely incorrect

>what killed pokemania
was Gen 2
>>
>>59521082
HGSS *was* its own nosedive in quality

but then BW was obviously trash
>>

>>59521102
To be fair nothing really comes close to Gen 1 Mewtwo, and while Arceus was strong on paper in Gen 4 it was limited by stat drinks being capped at 100 EVs a stat. Arguably Ho-Oh getting Brave Bird and physical STAB and Kyogre getting Choice Scarf was more significant. Also I can’t recall exactly but Gen 3 Ubers had weird counters to some behemoths.

I can respect people who want to end on gen 2 or 3.
For me personally it's gen 4. FrLg -> HgSs is basically the Tajiri story but with the bugs from gen 1 ironed out, better move distribution, physical special split, etc. The only gen 5 thing that could add to it would be the eviolite, and maybe the PWT. My issue with gen 5 is that they have a massive bloated dex of ugly pokemon with a vastly different artstyle that seem more like knockoffs of the originals.
An argument can also be made for gen 6 or 7 being the "last" gen since origins/generations was made for gen 6 and megas were the first major "gimmick" and gen 7 could be considered the bookend to Red and Blue's story with them reconciling and taking a vacation together. Any gen after that contributes nothing and is basically slop that shits all over the pokemon legacy especially with dexit, powercreep, increasingly ugly designs, bland samey human characters, and no more continuity or references to the old characters
>>
>>59518803
>>59520939
The PWT was a great idea but horrible execution. I actually liked how in the gen 6/7 games you can partner with NPCs like Steven. The PWT teams were also lazy and had no theme
>>
>>59514928
Do you mean like, up to what game you should stop playing or what game you should finish with?
If it's the former, gen 5. Last 2D games before X and Y made the games piss easy and added shitty gimmicks (okay, megas WERE cool but the rest that followed were lame)
If it's the latter, gen 2 since the fight with Red is honestly a great conclusion point and tests everything you've learned on various journeys
Although my "jumping off" point was actually the fight with Volo. The music, fighting on top of spear pillar, the double phase with Giratina, that satisfied me and I could consider myself done with future Pokemon games after that. Scarlet and Violet never interested me (hell, the ONLY Pokemon I like from that dex is the sexy grass cat) and gen 10 looks like absolute ass with its starters, so I'm good

Another reason gen 7 could be considered the end is it’s the last game where it’s possible to have all Pokémon that existed at time of release in the game. The death of National Dex
>>
>>59514928
gen 1 and 2 are fine for lore reasons. i can barely find anything to nitpick about gen 2.
with gen 3 came an obvious reboot and i didn't like what it did to the lore. visually, the moves looked so atrocious. thunderbolt, hyper beam, ice beam, aeroblast for example unsatisfying and flat compared to gsc. the introduction of evs being limited to 2 stats erased the viability of weak pokemon. no longer could you just pick your favorites and mostly get by. i also never forgave them for going back on mechanics like the radio, day/night, events, post-game regions which made gsc so immersive. you couldn't even obtain most of the older pokemon despite them existing in the game's files which was a new low. rse, and by extension frlg for the same reasons, killed pokemon for me despite being good games on their own. bill coming out of nowhere and forcing you onto a nonsensical sidequest after cinnabar's gym was insulting.
i couldn't even stomach gen 4 and 5. they were excruciatingly slow to play and ugly pokemon with big heads dominated the designs. rhydon's hideous evolution was painful to witness. the physical/special split wasn't a bad decision but not executed thoughtfully. what was once iconic, like gyarados and dragonite firing hyper beams, got reduced to being unviable.
i care about nothing that people complain about the later generations, including those horrendous remakes and garbage like pokemon go, because they're checking the pulse of skeletons. the 3d look alone makes me want to vomit.

I still think Sun/Moon era was great IF you don't get too assblasted by spamming A through cutscenes. The games were actually decently challenging (casual playthrough they were still one of the harder in the series. It was legitimately tough in challenge runs as the last game where you could turn off exp share iirc.) Graphics were the best on 3ds. It had megas and z crystals. I enjoyed the totem battles more than tired gym leaders.

You just have to be able to tolerate the first couple of hours being shitty tutorials and cutscenes.

Honestly, Gen 1 credits

Gen 2 and everything else is just here to sell you something "new," which is the definition of consumerism. And if you argue Gen 1 does that then fuck it abstain from this series and go collect baseball cards like a good little burger eater.

I cant recommend anyone suffer through johtos story and progression just to fight "yourself" when you most likely don't even relate to red in any form or way save for having a single starter or a Pikachu. It's a long walk for a short drink of water. Gen 2 is genuinely just proto Gen 1 DLC.

I can't recommend Gen 3 (which, in my personal opinion, is the last good game) because the story is genuinely terrible. The enemy teams should have been laughed out of Gamefreaks office as a concept. I dont understand having Lance fight through Team Rocket while Steven kinda just smiles and gives you things. Yes, I know you fight a single battle together in Mossdeep. I dont understand primordial god-like titans yelling at each other, which causes peace in the world. The urgency of saving a planet from a disaster for about half an hour of gameplay does not make this a curtain call.

Johto was about a balance between change vs. conservatism and Hoenn is about a balance between nature vs. development.
I dont think a pokemon game needs to be about something. I think a pokemon game should just be a fun, collecting, and battling experience. We should not try to balance anything but our teams.
