The key word is "cultivation", as in something you sow and grow through your own efforts. Bankai are usually involved because that's the natural result when you grow your own superpower from the ground up. In JJK they're given their powers and don't really cultivate it any further themselves, they only enter the arena and see who got the better cards and who knows how to use those cards better.

Like a bolt from the blue, it’s time for another Threadfic Review.I suspect I make a lot of references in these reviews that others don’t really get. In turn, there are a lot of references I don’t really get. I’ve never read Spice and Wolf. I’ve never read Blood Meridian. I haven’t played a Pokémon game since the original Sun & Moon. I’ve never seen a full episode of the pokémon anime. I thought Miku was an original character the first time I read PokeNormal. One of those was a lie. And, of course, I’ve never played the original Final Fantasy. That’s right, it’s Pokémon Crystal Light time.I’ll admit, a Pokémon Final Fantasy fic is not normally the sort of thing I would be interested in. In my eyes, pokémon is a series that poorly overlaps with worlds that already have human magic systems, because it either makes the pokémon kind of redundant, or the magic kind of redundant. I don’t know the setting of FF1 that well, so I can’t really say how much the author succeeded in avoiding this issue, but I can say that it mostly feels like a pokémon fic in a vaguely medieval fantasy setting. There’s still magic outside of pokémon, in the form of curses, elemental forces, and the like, but (with one notable exception) you don’t really get humans casting thundaga or whatever.
>>59516336Speaking of, the core human cast is pretty small. It’s basically just Jane and Wol, with Garland, Sarah, Hex-Matoya and Joy serving as the major side characters. Sarah seems to be joining the main cast on a more permanent basis, considering chapter 7. I think the fic sells the relationship between Wol and Garland pretty well, establishing their friendship and rivalry enough that you can really buy how much Garland’s betrayal messes Wol up. It helps that Garland’s presence (or absence) continues to be felt as the fic goes on, both through Wol and Jane.Jane is not typically an archetype of character that I like. She’s reckless and naive, with a tendency to complain about situations she got herself into. Yet, as the story goes on, it’s revealed that the recklessness is (at least in part) due to her not valuing her own life that highly in comparison to Garland or her sister, which was basically enough for me to pivot back to liking her as a character. It helps recontextualise her earlier actions as less ‘naive’ and more ‘wanting to make her mark on the world, consequences be damned.’ In a meta sense I assume she’s based on Princess Mia, a character so unimportant that she didn’t even have a name in the original Final Fantasy, which feels fitting for how she’s characterised in this story. She certainly doesn’t seem to fit the role of any of the classic warriors of light.
>>59516339Wol, on the other hand, is so archetypically a Warrior of Light that his name is just an abbreviation of the moniker. This naming decision is so monumentally stupid I can only assume it was actually a name given to the protagonist of FF1 by Squenix at some point (lo and behold, google tells me the protagonist of FF Mobius is called Wol, so I was a little off the mark but not by much). He’s pretty straightforward as a John Heroman: wants to help people, avoids killing, kind, reserved and mostly humorless. The complexity he does have mostly comes from the conflict between him wanting to save people and the fact that doing so will sometimes require him to kill, or at least hurt, others. Killing Astos and accepting Garland’s sword as his own is a pretty big moment for him as a character, but unfortunately the ramifications of that are yet to really be explored since it only just happened. I do like how much he seems to respect the independence of others, both in the case of Jane and in the pokémon that follow him. It suits someone in a leadership role and makes it believable that he was once a beloved Knight commander.
>>59516342The pokémon who follow our hero probably fit the party roles of Final Fantasy better than any of the humans do, though they don’t quite slot in cleanly. Chansey and Vileplume are pretty clearly the White and Black Mage/Wizard respectively, while Blastiose and Wol tag team the role of the Warrior/Knight. Hitmonchan seems like a shoo-in for Monk/Master then, right? It punch. It’s literally the fist. But it specifically seems to be a rather versatile fighter that can hit a wide range of weaknesses, which feels more like a Red Mage, even if it can’t heal like a Red Mage can. Well, it actually feels more like a Tyrant than anything, but that class wasn’t in the original FF. Ultimately it probably fits Monk the best, which leaves us with a missing Thief and Red Mage. Meowth and Pikachu maybe? Meowth sure is a thief, but Absol is implied to be the “Shadow” of the Warriors of Light, even if it doesn’t immediately answer the call. Pikachu can do one thing, and that’s thunder. It’s pretty good at that one thing, but that’s not really Red Mage material, not to mention Vileplume dismisses the possibility basically immediately. Regardless of the meta-discussion around party roles, I do like the pokémon in this fic. They all have distinctive personalities, personal objectives, and reasons for joining (or leaving) the team. Vileplume is a particular stand-out, being an arrogant, haughty, old witch who is more physically and seemingly emotionally fragile than she likes to think. Her initial interactions with Matoya are entertaining and give you a good impression of the sort of person you’re dealing with, especially considering Wol (and the reader) cannot understand a word she’s saying. The crystal eye being a sort of Unown is also cool and I like how its personality contrasts with Vileplume’s.

It’s consistently brave and willing to sacrifice itself for others, is basically the reason why the party can navigate the sea at all, and proves itself to be highly capable in combat. It’s obviously proud of its abilities, but insecure about its role as a hero considering its troubled past and rarely looks down on others. Honestly, I think it’s kind of too well-adjusted for an ex-pirate. There is an explicit mention in the text that it struggles with people and pokémon who aren’t hardened pirates, but it honestly seems to get along with everyone just fine. If anything, it just doesn’t seem to like it when others are fretting over it. Maybe that struggle would come across better if I knew what it was actually saying.Now, I’m not a big fan of pokémon just saying their own names at the best of times, but with how much pokémon “speak” in this story it starts to feel really quite egregious. It (barely) works in the anime because saying the name can still efficiently carry useful information in the form of tone, but in text it's just repeating the same word over and over with the actually relevant info contained in the speech tag at the end, if any is even conveyed at all. It also just feels kinda stupid, I guess? Takes me out of the dramatic moment when the pokémon just starts yelling “HIT HIT HIT” like a bad jojo translation.

A smile broke across her face as she continued, “-dialogue-”.} There also seems to be a particular dearth of commas and other rhythmic punctuation, giving many sentences a weirdly drawn-out feeling despite not actually being that long. I’m about to start using words like ‘cadence’ again, but I will try to learn from past mistakes — trying to teach English when I haven’t formally studied it for over a decade — and shut up about that. I will say that both these issues ease up a lot as the fic goes on, or I least got more used to it.

I get that the author’s hands are kinda tied, but I can’t say chasing macguffins is particularly compelling to me. That’s not to say the fic is devoid of intrigue. In that game there is a prophecy that <playername> (defaults to Wol) will become the warrior of light. So literally thousands of men named Wol have been isekai'd into the setting and thrown into destiny's meat grinder to fulfill the prophecy. The majority of NPC's you meet have the same name as the MC. Wol's personality is actually a relfection and exploration of my own struggles with confidence and kindness. Pulling the Squirtle out of the stone, so to speak, has given him more opportunity and responsibility than he feels he deserves. All of the Pokemon of Light are going to be Gen 1 mons with the intention being 'first FF = first Gen'. This led to some world building with each nation having its own Gen population associated with it. So the neighboring kingdom of Melmond has Johto, Elfland has Hoenn, etc. Back to Hitmonchan, it's moveset is actually based on it being a pirate more than it being a monk. Thunder Punch to fight off wild water pokemon, Close Combat for pure damage, Ice Punch for coverage, and Sunny Day to clear storms + Weaken water attacks. Fire Punch makes more sense with Sunny Day, but... Eh. As for how well adjusted it is for a former pirate there is a reason for that but that's spoilers. And yes, who the Pokemon of Light end up being is part of the mystery. Along with who the Warriors of Light will be, as the only one with a guaranteed spot right now is Wol.
