I think the issue is they just went into a weird magic realm not tied to anything. The airship and traveling everywhere via it and popping into random places felt weird. Didn't really get it. It was too fantastical. The point of pokemon is a solved formula. Some kid gets a pokemon, they go on a journey through their home region. Not sure what the fuck was happening with horizons with the shiny Rayquaza, multiple protagonists, hat Pikachu. It just feels like they threw anything and every possible idea in there when a lot of people should have been told "That's stupid".

It's true, Ash is one of the most recognizable faces in the franchise.But not for the right reasons. Nobody has taken him seriously in a good decade, everyone remembers him as the meme that got cockblocked by the writers on a regular basis. Barring a dozen emotionally stunted 35 year olds, nobody is really interested in new Ash content.It's also not a reason to bring him back. Bringing back Goku was a mistake, bringing back Naruto was a mistake, and they actually had ended on a high note.
