This was when information was scarce and it was hard to find and catch many pokemon. Yes there were magazines and strategy guides but those were for dorks and less than 1% of kids (this was back when the audience was actually children not faggot ass weaboo tranny man children). A trade evolution pokemon was technically rarer than a mewtwo or sub-legendary since you can’t independently catch it>it’s actually very good in battle. Much like other rare pokemon, the labor of obtaining one is worth it because its speed and special attack and move pool are excellent>aesthetic design and overall vibe is far and away among the best in earlier gens. It’s easy for a kid to draw with a crayon (kids in my classes did all the time) and just a super memorable and appealing design. The “kimo kawaii” (creepy cute) aesthetic is also huge among Japanese kids and Japanese girls especially so it gained a lot of popularity for years. Similar to why Mimikyu is so popular these days especially in Japan and even Sableye gets ranked highly in Japan>marketing: Pokemon literally favored designs and Pokemon it deemed more commercially appealing so Gengar early on was doing well in focus groups and surveys and they marketed it a lot, not as much as Pikachu or charizard but a lot more than others>and most importantly: its r34 is absolutely primo

And that's assuming ghost type actually worked as advertised: in gen 1 only, psychic types are actually immune to ghost attacks!Trying to beat gen 1 Mewtwo with super effective attacks is a trap, since the devs made every attack that is super effective against psychic type so weak it doesn't really matter. You're better off countering their Mewtwo with your Mewtwo, or using a neutral but high base damage attack from a strong physical attacker, like Earthquake from Tauros or Selfdestruct from Snorlax. Or stalling it with a Chansey.
