It's unnatural, they cannot maintain that form, it stresses their DNA and their bodies to morph into something just for a battle boost. Think about how stressful and tiring potentially also painful it is for the Pokemon to temporarily grow these unnatural physical features and extra powers, not native to their DNA. This is how cancer develops, repeated mitochondrial insult/injury. At some point, the ability of the body to repair that unnatural damage after each time goes down and down, to the point where it just can't fully repair it any more. From then on, it's a snowball effect all the way to full-on cancer.I know it's just a kids story to support a commercial goldmine of a franchise.But if it was thought about more in depth and seriously, then Mega Evolution is just as bad as Laqium. While it may not break the trainer-mon bonds like Laqium, it arguably causes more long term physical damage to their bodies, if you apply irl biology principles to Pokemon. In a work of fiction based in the same universe as Horizons but with a more serious tone geared towards adults, you'd see a world where there's a political movement to ban Mega Evolution, with protests and lobbying groups both ways, and it's a really hot button issue that divides populations from the mass level all the way down to the family level, like abortion currently is in Murrca.
