Gold is peak Y2K aesthetic which one might see as a contrast with Gen 2's focus on tradition and legend but its fitting with how during that time there's a transition into a new era where technology and life rapidly advances. Ethan on the other hand has a lot more "smooth" look that doesnt stray away from the original, it simply modernises it and while its very vague i do see how they went with a "ninja motiff" like they mentioned in interviews.As for Gen 2, i think one reason it stands out so much is immersion. There's a variety of events happening daily, weekly, during specific or completely random times, NPCs arent just static setpieces, you can interact with them differently with the Pokegear, the world itself holds secrets that arent railroaded to you and can only be found through your own incentive. There's also plenty of positives gameplay wise from rebalancing the game with the inclusion of two new types and the Special stat split, the introduction of being able to hold items and to even more elaborate additions like TWO REGIONS, Stadium 2 connectivity that is basically expansion pack tier and freaking online play on a handheld console in 2001. Gen 2 really is peak.

You have to leave the route to rematch them within their time period as I just found out because I never bothered to test that with the poke gear after a rematch as I would just go to mt silver or victory road to more consistently grind. But again, you’re still a massive faggot if you think this even remotely solves the level curve issues in the game, even in the campaign. You’re limited to a few per day still, rotating across the week which wouldn’t make a meaningful dent to your team composition (not counting the randoms). As opposed to the infinite and almost immediate use of the seeker, the difference in inconvenience is massive. It’s hardly a fix at all… A REAL fix to the match call would have been a system where you can call anyone, anytime, but they have a small chance of rejecting your rematch, at which point you need to wait like an hour or two to call.
