I think there is not that many failed trainers because of stories like >>59562523 said, its plot lines that kind of make you wallow in misery or depression, and depending on how one is, that might be a touchy subject for a lot of people.
I also feel they are boxed into one specific ending, still stuck in the situation but accepting it is how it is, you could argue getting out of that situation is another option, but idk. Feels like a cop out if you go that path.

I do want to keep it friendly by the end. Mainly Mudkip, because I saw myself like it at the time.
I used to be a goofer, who one day got a bit too into bodybuilding, and everything ran from there.
Besides, I always loved the classic trop of being a silly cute guy turning into a massive powerhouse, yet never lost that "little guy" energy.
Nowadays is a bit hard seeing that "old" me, but when I see any mon of the Mudkip line, at least the good memories are with him.

It's three play groups, and we play pretty often actually (it's usually my schedule that fucks things up because I'm basically always on call now) two of the groups made sure to have Wednesdays off which is so many people in different time zones able to agree on an off day it feels anomalous. Honestly I dont mind the coinflips that much, I came across a Darkrai "hurt you while you sleep" deck and even if I got fucked by the coin flips, they had igglybufff and espeon to keep me asleep, At least those feel like that is the intended strategy. the lucky pop just feels like a "fuck you I just healed 100 of your damage you did to me because I managed to roll the 1 in 32 chance". Yeah. Back in Gen 6, Mega Evolution was a reaction due to space rocks that increase the power of a Pokémon. By uniting this with friendship, you had a reasonable power up for when you and your bestie are really synchronized as one. Even the bad XY anime episode showed this.
But then in Gen 7, it said the power was so much for Pokémon, they were actually self destucting themselves by using it. So yeah, beings like Heatran and Victrebeel are killing themselves so little Billy can use a non-effective attack. Because reasons. It's bullshit.

That would be a cool set piece for an open town.
Gym battles are treated as hype events, so when the Gym is open, is like an "open season" event where people go to watch the fights.
You can talk with fans, with other trainers (that don't trigger by seeing eye to eye, but by talking to them), and there are vitamin and TM shops.
But when you get the badge, most fans leave, there's a clean up guy walking around, and only one store open (selling those vitamins and TMs, saying those were surplus).
Sounds like a fun place.
