if you're serious about completing card dex, make a second account asap. with trading and sharing which are unlocked after 2 weeks, you can send 2 cards from your alt to your main every day at no real cost.
mini sets like the current one tend to be in the ballpark of 70 diamond cards, meaning an alt can complete a mini set for you in 4 1/2 to 5 weeks without you having to open a single pack of said mini set. that's really important since just keeping up with the current set's collection is hard enough sometimes.

the elite deck is really helpful, mega lucario is a top 3 deck and solid contender for best in the game atm

Honestly we kind of fucked up on Mega Rising, there's no real essential trainers since then and most of the meta mons never went out of style. You definitely want flame patch, lucky ice pop, a bunch of the stadiums (very easy to tell which ones are good and bad) with field blower, the new tools, maybe Juliana and Serena for the right decks.

Bench snipe and statue effects are a nightmare now, fast burst is as volatile as ever. Good luck fitting most of what you'll want in your 20 card decks.

eh, it's really just copycat that was a mistake. it's just another card every deck needs to have, which means there's less room for other, more specialized cards. like if we didn't have copycat people would definitely run sightseer in certain decks, but as-is she just can't be justified over copycat. lisia and may are fine, they're very deck-specific which is a good thing.
there's a lot of post-mega rising supporters that are impactful and worth using (clemont, korrina, juliana, sada, turo, wallace, etc), they're just not as generic as copycat, which again is a good thing. the last thing this game needs is more generic goodstuff every deck needs to have.

Copycat leveled the playingfield a little. Oh, you have 8 cards in your fucking hand? Guess what, I have 8 as well now, faggot. The issue is they needed to powercreep Suicine/Entei and couldn't just make it a Pokemon since everyone would just run that mon. So they decided to make a trainer that everyone would have to run instead.

So they were a mistake to add, but a necessary mistake due to the fucking first mistake they made. The legendary hyenas should have never had such busted abilities. Or if they did, they should have all been as retardedly weak as Raikou and essentially serve as 2 point fodder in exchange for decking out faster.

really you can trace the problem back to greninja. back then suicune was only good because of greninja, raikou was only fringe playable, and entei was utterly dogshit because we didn't have flame patch and charmeleon yet. without greninja there really wouldn't have been a need for copycat in the first place.

Greninja or not, Suicune would have been used. 120 damage for 2 energy was very rare at the time, and I don't think any other basics had that capability. If you didn't want to get hit for 120, you had to give up your own bench space.

crowns seem like pipe dreams, and immersives feel wasteful to pull for since DX 2 is coming up and i already have some kind of special version of most of them (all the relevant ones)
like i could pull for immersive altaria because that card looks really nice, but i already have the planeta, most altaria decks only run it at 1 anyway, and i'm liable to just pull DX altaria next month so i can't shake the feeling that pulling mega rising would be wasting my resources
anything tradeable also feels wasteful since i have decent trade fodder and could just trade for it

Not the end of the world if you don't start Munchlax. Only Rowlette start is terrible, anyone else can pivot pretty well without an ideal start. Balloon is ideal on Ori but generally helps a lot with a poorly positioned Froakie/Rowlette start (unless you need your poncho that match).

Only the last point counts, so losing Ori/Munchlax is usually how matches will go. Bonus points if they're forced to allocate 2 energies or something on an Ori counter while you're assembling Deceduleye in the process.

All right, I remembered why I dropped this game 8 months ago. It is impossible to jump back into this game as a new player or long time returning player. I opened 40 packs and couldn't get a single fucking raticate ex. that card is what made me feel like picking the game back up for some reason. On top of that, I still need a bunch of trainer cards from old outdated sets that will probably take months to get them all and try and stay marginally up to date. They have a new user problem and aren't doing anything about it, no wonder user base is dropping.

Other than that I remember I stopped playing because you're constantly bricking, and going first is still a massive unbalanced disadvantage (babies helped a bit, but now power creep is moving where tons of shit hits for 30 right out of the gate).

I'll just go back to watching youtubers play this game instead of playign myself

That's a valid use. I just see it used so often in evolution decks, where it becomes useless after evolving. And in some cases, I'd rather just be able to retreat easily while evolved too.

It's an upgrade in most cases desu. Unless you're running a lot of tools, it lets you turn a basic 1 retreat Pokemon into a 0 retreat. If you need to throw x-speed away for a copycat and don't find a basic on your next hand then you just wasted it, but if you throw it onto a mon then you get to save it for later.

You're usually using x-speed to try fixing a bad starting hand, so you'll most likely be using it on a basic. Most people just don't have need for it aside from that. Sure it can be nice to have for an evo later in the game, but I think most evo decks are fine on energy costs by that point in the game. Removing a single energy from Blaziken or Altaria doesn't matter. I guess the issue is that retreat costs are way too cheap in this game so they're only really prohibitive early game when resources are scarce.

Though you're right, I do think more decks should run x-speed over balloon. But also, balloon has more opportunity to be useful and less chance of being wasted I guess. If your only goal with it is repositioning a bad starting hand then it's strictly better since it lasts more than a single turn. Didn't get another basic on turn 1 even after a Copycat, but maybe turn 3 you use your Oak and get one. If you used Balloon before Copycat then you don't need to waste an energy to pull back.

The game is poorly designed in general so I don't even know what the answer is. If evos got high retreat costs, they'd be terrible to use. Stage 2's felt bad to run before Rare Candy saved them. The game design heavily favors EX basic mon who can get up and in your face ASAP, so I can see why they need an edge. Maybe the real answer is EX mon need to actually feel like heavy motherfuckers who can't move unless their EX is specifically designed around "I have 0 retreat cost, that's why I'm EX" like Starmie or Weavile.

Or maybe the real answer is basic EX mons shouldn't even fucking exist. Have the EX form be an evolution of the regular if they're a basic. Regular evo EX mons can stay as they are.

I think it's an upgrade if you're running something like Hoopa where you're loaded with basics. But seeing it on Lucario or Altaria decks over X Speed just seems wrong, because both of those megas can retreat for 1 and you don't have to delay evolution or lose out on the benefit later on in the game.
If I want to get my Swablu out of play early, I don't want that to disrupt my energy amounts, The game is so fast now that it does matter if you can't get your 2 energy in play in 2 consecutive turns.
