And even the ones with more direct inspiration often deviate quite a lot from the source organisms Cyndaquil line arguably goes through 6-7 different animals. Typhlosion and Quilava very clearly look mustelid by Cyndaquil looks more like a shrew, echidna, or even a tenrec and the dex insists is a “mouse” however it does resemble a stink badger (pic related) but that almost seems like a lucky coincidence Furret is probably the most mustelid pokemon to the point it should be this thread’s mascot but no amount of stretch could link Sentret to any currently known mustelid,Sneasel and its family are clearly weasel in spirit, being explicitly based on weasel yokai and the dex saying they steal pidgey eggs. Except their small body long limbs combo is practically the opposite of the mustelids and media often treats them like cats. The Stunky family was golden, being obviously skunks and nothing else, until genetic analysis caused skunks to be moved out of the Mustelida family, though still in the greater Musteloidea Superfamily Zangoose and the Yungoose family, very obviously mongooses. Simple right? Except mongooses aren’t mustelids, not even close, despite them looking like mustelids, moving like mustelids, and acting just like mustelids, they’re Herpestids. Convergent evolution sure is something. Tdlr, I just go by vibes at this point. If it’s has the mustelid body (mammalish noodle with short limbs), is at least partly based on a mustelid or mustelid-like creature, then it’s good.
