On an old project of mine I had the main party encounter and defeat a colony of powerful Boldore led by a powerful Gigalith and the MC had a couple open spots in their team. I've been reading "Within our Nation" recently and finished the first 'book', consisting of 28 chapters divided into three 'arcs', with the length of each arc being 30k, 34k, and 41k words respectively. The pacing is decent, with it closing in on its ending at about 620k, so faster than Hyphen or BoC, but not as fast paced as early BoC. Really I feel like the first arc could have used the most tightening up, but since all the tangents are used for setting the scene, world building, and are decently interesting, it's rather good by web serial standards, especially with the quality of the writing and prose itself.The fic is about Hoshi Mutsu, an estranged descendant of a Ninja clan stuck working as a construction worker ever since his mom disappeared, dad died, and he refused the charity of his uncle Bob Surge. He's angry, although has a decent handle of his issue, and has a revanchist streak a mile long born of his hatred for Johto under the belief that they've been stealing Kanto's wealth ever since the Indigo War where the two nations were unified in an attempt to stop them from killing each other.Basically, one day he gets targeted by a Team Rocket recruiter and spends the first arc winding up to join them, followed by the second which is about his first day at Team Rocket school and him acclimating, before the third arc where he's aiming to complete his first TR job bugging the Vermilion City gym and getting a badge at the same time.Aside from that, the sort of background or overarching plot has Clair and the elite four trying to stop a second Kanto-johto war while tracking down Team Rocket, corralling the legendary birds, with the repercussions of their actions affecting everyone. All the while Lance is whispering in her ear 'you know we can just kill people we don't like, fuck diplomacy'It's funny she's the reasonable one here.

Puce is cute and pitiable. Moony is pretty fun, kind of agro, but enjoyable and leaves an interesting impression.Ryan's, a rich Viridian who gets snubbed for the leader position and has to be put in line. He's fine, but I don't think I've seen a rich jerk character I liked more than Soren (Spice & Fox), at least in the pokefic sphere. Ryan is a good second though, especially with what he named his Bagon.Honestly I have to agree with what Pofag told me, this fic doesn't have enough eyes on it. For me it clears Hyphen, PoPT, IMO, and BoC. Not so sure about S&F, but it edges out CSP in my book.

In addition, Sneasel and Weaviles have the Dark-type as their primary type while Ice is their secondary. Compared to something like a Jynx with has Ice as it's primary type and Psychic as it's secondary. As if primary and secondary typings is that important lmao. Gym typings are sort of malleable anyways, Jasmine changed her gyms typing from Rock to Steel, it more has to do with what the Gym leader's specialty is and what their infrastructure can support. So it's only Ice-type because Pryce is leader. There's even resources for it to be a Normal or Dark-type.

Within our Nation arc 4Since it's past the first arc I'll spoil more things now. But the arc starts out with everybody having a beach day and the team deciding they need more pokemon, then Hoshi pissed off a boss so they have to run errands for him, which leads into Hoshi learning he's psychic thanks to Team Rocket's very own Psychic hunter and mad scientists. Turns out all of the fancy color descriptions were due to thatAfter that he still has to collect his gym badge from Surge in a whole ceremony, as he and Casca cement their relationship further.It's definitely the oddest of the previous arcs due to there not being a strong singular goal, things just flow from thing to thing. But it's not bad and Nerine is getting some more focus alongside Puce, while Moony and Ryan are mostly the same but still good. Although Ryan is slowly closing the gap between him and Soren (Spice and Fox)The background stuff is still going smoothly the MC is siding with the obvious Rocket-plant free the league people who orchestrated the whole Moltress attack which Clair had to deal with, with them trying to force the league and Clair into a bad spot. Which as she, Lance, and the E4 have said is just another excuse for their lauded civil war using the 3 birds as WMDs.Also I spotted my first grammar mistake.Also, I was right about Pokephilia, although wrong about the details. Humans and pokemon are fundamentally different lifeforms who can't reproduce and the MC is a psychic, not a descendant of pokemon. Within our Nation Arc 5, end of Book 2Arc 5 has Hoshi and his team of four, plus an enforcer and a more experienced grunt go out into the wilderness with three newbies forming a group of twelve. The new guys are really incompetent, Tor, their leader, doesn't even know how to use a pokeball correctly. There's also Lil', who's a girl and there, as well as Mojo, who has a beard. I joke about Lil', she's probably the funniest one of the group: a cheerleader who was in business management classes and now she's totally out of her depth because her politics lines up with Team Rocket's.The training camp is mostly shit with even the way there being tough.It's really nice to get more Ninja lore on Nerine and Hoshi, given that although while they're not Ninjas, they don't exactly try to hide the fact they're related to Koga and Janine. Even if neither of them really think about it all that much, or even their own relation to each other, it's just not important to either of them.Also weirdly enough, Archer (aka Carl Apollo) is a bug-type specialist. I have no idea where that came from, his ace is a Houndoom. He goes around larping as a Samurai warlord dressed in metapod armor.
