>Bad non-linearity
Make a huge open field, pepper in the location with actual content. Then add some generic copy paste locations.
>Bad linearity
The game is literally a straight line with no offshoots to explore and things to disckver outside the main quest.
>Good non-linearity
Have a small tightly packed open world of handmade content, or even better multiple levels and pathways connected in a non-linear way with shortcuts and many different routes like the later Castlevania games or Souls.
>Good linearity
Have a linear story but have offshoots for the player actually to explore, sidequests, backtracking with new abilities to discover secrets in old areas and maybe even let the player pick in what order to pursuit objectives. Also, unless the game is about a physical journey from one location to another, add shortcuts to make the world feel more connected and less like a series of levels.

But SV is linear as fuck

checks out save for the ROMhack I know nothing about

>it's linear because I'm dogshit at pokemon games

Its linear becuase you can't actually go anywhere at the start of the game without glitches dumbass, its designed to railroad you onto a predefined path until you get more bike abilities and you can't just pursue the "goal" you want because you really need to kill titan pokemon for more abilities.

People calling gen 1 non-linear is funny to me... Like I guess they mean you can just not do saffron city for a while since beating sabrina doesn't allow you to use a HM.... and uh....

Like the only thing else I can imagine is getting to fuchsia city wither by the cycling road or the lavendar route. Which if this is why people call gen 1 linear I'm gonna put this in that weird nostalgia zone next to the people who found the tunnel thing in willie wonka scary!!!!

"non-linear" doesn't mean "you can go literally anywhere in the game at any point"

this is as retarded as claiming BOTW is linear because of the great plateau
>>
>>59611801
In Botw the great plateu is the tutorial part of the game, once you finish it you can literally go anywhere, even to beat ganon.
In SV once you get out of the school (aka the tutorial) you should be able to go anywhere you want but you actually can't, terrain stop you unless you have some abilities.

Is this a shill thread for a romhack

You can't go anywhere you want in Zelda either retard.

SwSh was a bad game but I didn't have any issues with the progression itself

i would probably think less of base b/w if instead of the battle subway the game had an actual subway system and the game opened up at nimbasa, allowing you to go to pocket areas all over the region however you wanted, some connecting and others being totally separate, playing into the urbanization of "needing" a car or something in shithole america, so the region could have a larger sense of scale and have more of a unique identity from other regions, letting its routes be actual routes instead of the "roads" that plague the latter half of the game, while possibly slightly alleviating the theme park region issue if things were placed better like this, and ultimately letting you play the latter half of the game however you wanted, ideally this would be level scaled based on the order of things you do but everyone knows it wouldnt be lol, anything would be better than circle though

You can do the middle 4 gyms in pretty much any order, half the main game isn't locked to a set progression. I just did a run where I saved Surge for last because I didn't feel like dealing with his stupid trash cans. There's also side stuff like actually trying to fill the pokedex for the later rewards, grinding the casino (be that the grind to buy the coins, or actually playing the slots) for porygon, exploring the rest of the safari zone, you can catch zapdos and articuno pretty much as soon as you get surf and strength respectively, and even as early as first reaching Viridian you have the choice to go towards the league to catch some more pokemon and battle your rival or go for Pewter to start collecting badges. That's pretty non-linear for a gameboy game, and by pokemon's standards overall.
