It failed in Gen 2, with le funni bitey mon being more popular, it failed to claw back any kind of impact or market share, again outside contrarian spergs in Gen 4, especially in Japan so when it came to making 3 burner starter mega evos (because again, they locked the Kalos set to NSO-mandatory online battles) they chose one they knew would catch the least amount of heat for along with the other Johto shitmon and one the other most maligned starter set in series history. Because people wanted M-Chesnaught, M-Delphox and M-Greninja back in Gen 6, when game Freak were not treating megas as an "on-generational" thing and no-one would really give a shit about the ones they started off with in contrast.
