How do you imagine types? Do you group them into headcanon categories? This one for example I dividing them into elements and aspects, where Dragon and Normal are the neutral ones, the four around are secondary and the ones in the corner are tertiary made from elements next to them.

1. the distinction between ground and rock types is wholly superficial because rocks exist in the ground and the ground is made of rocks2. the flying type should've been the air type. the "flying" theme/name is overly specific, limiting and also logically forcing the type on all pokemon who can fly. this is why firebreathing dragons have to be either fire/flying, fire/dragon or flying/dragon.3. "ice" type should've been frost or cold type. Ice is water, and water already exists.4. Grass should've been "plant". Not all plants are grass, and not all grass pokemon are based on grass.5. "Fighting" is just Normal with martial arts skills. The type feels redundant and could've been just an expansion of Normal.6. What even is a bug? Why is this a type name that's based on animals that already exist? Flying has the same issue. Why are they not named after magical elements/aspects being manipulated like literally every other type? (besides normal and fighting which are meant to be non-magical)
>>59627018>AnimalNormalFightingBugDarkGrassStoneSteelFlying>ElementalFireWaterGhostIceFairyPsychicElectricGroundDragonAnd ebfore you bring it up I know about the gen 1-3 special physical shit, but this is MY interpretation.
>>59627018Left is just the elements from ATLA
>>59627018I group the "esoteric" types: Ghost, Psychic, Dark and FairyI believe starters should never be an esoteric type, nor should they be Dragon (except megas).
>>59627082>1but usually ground types are animals that live in the ground while rock types are rock made golems>>59627200I fight with the idea that dark type is esotericits moves aren't magical powers, rather just dirty battle tricks
>>59627082>5. "Fighting" is just Normal with martial arts skills. The type feels redundant and could've been just an expansion of Normal.Fighting is super normal. Normal type on steroids.Everyone knows that. That's why fighting types can break steel and rock while normal types cannot.
>>59627275>>59627324Interesting. But yeah, my rant was just about how the types are not a consistent classification system, and different types mean different things. It works for gameplay purposes.
>>59627082Bug is Pokemon's most unique type by a the longest measure imaginable, shitting on it proves you are a fake fan, as if the rest of your autism didnt.>le ice is le frozen waterAnd fire is hot air. Arrest yourself.
Normal is also an outlier, representing a placeholder type (many Fairy Types were formerly Normal ones). Themes like digital, light or sound either doesn't have enough members to justify their own type, or it would cause drastical imbalances in existing ones (if you make sound its own type, then normal is left with almost no special moves).Dragon, Ghost and Fairy could be also grouped as imaginary / mythological creatures.Where you would put ??? Type?>>59627082>the distinction between ground and rock types is wholly superficial because rocks exist in the ground and the ground is made of rocksGround is meant to represent Earth as the ground below. Regarding stones, Anything that's composed of fine materials, like sand, soil, mud, is associated with Ground, meanwhile bigger objects ranging from pebbles over boulders to meteorites would be linked to Rock.>"Fighting" is just Normal with martial arts skills. The type feels redundant and could've been just an expansion of Normal.Fighting could also literally represent physical force.>What even is a bug? Why is this a type name that's based on animals that already exist? Flying has the same issue. Why are they not named after magical elements/aspects being manipulated like literally every other type? (besides normal and fighting which are meant to be non-magical)The thematic vagueness of types is both necessary for the Paper-Rock-Scissors-mechanic as well as interesting, considering one might wonder where a concept would rather fit with categories as weird as those.
Normal feels like the weak type.Hits NOTHING super effectively. But is weak against stone and steel. And gets destroyed by fighting.Ghost immunity is the only positive but it also cannot STAB hit Ghost types so you just end up both using non-STAB moves against each other unless the ghost has a subtype in which case it has the absolute advantage again.Often relying on non-STAB moves from other types for damage. And then fiighting existing which is the same thing but ten times better.
>>59627275>but usually ground types are animals that live in the ground while rock types are rock made golemswhat type is Runergious?
I think everyone mentally groups the sandstorm types together as some nameless pack
>>59627731>GroundLiterally is sand>SteelToo hard to be damaged by sand.>StoneI guess it is also too hard to be damaged short-term, but in real life constant friction from sand can erode stone.Steel also cannot be poisoned because they are inorganis (but ghost types are organic apparently).
Good thread and I think your OP example is a great method of organizing them. I personally see Poison as more naturally-occurring the majority of the time and Fairy as supernaturally occurring or as the result of coming from Somewhere Else*TM so I would tweak those placements. But overall a knockout.
>>59627731The earth types
>>59627018flying being an element and Dark being an aspect feels wrong. I know it's caleld Evil type in Japan; but it's mostly darkness manipulation in practice whereas Flying does not do nearly enough wind manipulation
Electric being supereffective to Water but not being supereffective to Steel makes no sense
>>59627018>>59627039>>59627047>>59627068Fascinating.
>>59627018we need a few more types to balance the current chart, things that are strong against fairy, ghost or dark (and maybe steel) while being weak to stuff like bug and poison, they also should give weak types like bug, rock and ice more resistances to things like electric, dark, ghost, or fairy
>>59627082they should just replace the rock type for gem/crystal
>>59627275>dirty battle tricksI agree, but dirty tricks you could say are because of a corrupted soul...lol I dunno
>>59628986indeed
>>59627082>>59629000This ^tem tem has a Mystic Crystal type for magic users, and an Earth type for regular tough creatures.
>>59627715It should be rock
As much as I hate to say it, flying is not an elemental type.It fits more with normal and fighting vs grass, water, and fire
>>59627082>1. the distinction between ground and rock types is wholly superficial.Ground is the Tough type. It exists solely for balancing reasons, like Poison. This is why the most reliable super strong move is Earthquake. Flying and Levitate exist to counteract that.>2. the flying type should've been the air type. the "flying" theme/name is overly specific.Ghost is the gaseous type. Wind as an attack is mostly neutral temperature/ chemical/ effectiveness wise, hence it was Normal in Gen 1. An "air bender" type would only make sense in terms of counterattack effectiveness, which is not how the chart works. Winged creatures are frail yet fast, armed with sharp beaks or claws, an air bison is just a bison with a wind shield ? >3. "ice" type should've been frost or cold type. That's what it is. HOWEVER as i stated above, the types are not matched in terms of counterattacks. SO there needs to be a physical attribute to the Cold mons to interact with. Thick fat and Fluffy hyde do not make for interesting type match ups. ALTHOUGH considering the above, Electric attacks should do x1/2 to Cold mons.>4. Grass should've been "plant".That's what it is.>5. "Fighting" is just Normal with martial arts skills. No, it is the Hand type. Having palms allows one to grabble or throw their opponent, cracking the shell of Mineral type mons under the force of their own weight when hitting the ground.>6. What even is a bug? Because the type chart is not counterattacking elemental blasts. Bugs are cool. Bugs are weird. Bugs have segmented armour like samurai knights. Bugs have all sort of weird ambush tricks like ninjas. Bugs don't even breath the same way mammals or fish do, very alien. So they deserve their own type.
>>59627018I think types go into each other quite a lot. normal dark and fighting are all connected, one could imagine a normal Pokemon becoming dark or fighting through some sort of metamorphosis after a crisis. similarly, ghost, psychic and fairy are all otherworldly and share thematic, physical, metaphysical attributes. Rock and ground, another one of those pairings. Rock Pokemon turning into ground over time or vice versa. Poison is just a weapon type for 90% of the roster. Bug poison doesn't embody poison, does embody bug. Muk, garbodor are exceptions. Elemental types like water, fire electric are outliers in this schema though. I take suggestions
>>59627082Flying should have been split into Wind and Bird from the start
>>59627715Ground is meant to represent mostly regular animals, whereas Rock is more supernatural. but the aesthetic of Ground is that of a thick hyde which can be represented as rubbery skin folds, scales , or slabs of mud or sand.
>>59627275Dark type only works as a supernatural type, otherwise it's just feral Normal type.It was supposed to be a nocturnal Yokai type back when the franchise wasn't so gay. For Dark to make sense now, as it has evolved into a Feral type but with Ghost effectiveness for some reason, it should become a Fairy-eater type. "Some beasts have a never-ending hunting instinct. They seek to kill anything near them. Some even acquired taste for pixies. Pixies are quick, and shining. So they lurk in the shadows, waiting for the perfect timing to ambush them with a sucker punch. Consuming Fairies grants them supernatural powers, like touching intangible ghosts."Fairy mons get 2x from Steel, Poison, Dark attacks.Fairy attacks do 2x on Dragon, Fighting, Bug and 1/2x on Grass, Steel, Fire, Electric.

>>59627018I have extreme aphantasia, so I am unable to visualize anything. I just have everything memorized verbally. So I'll subvocalize a type name and have their strengths and weaknesses subvocalized back to me. Do people actually group types up like this mentally? That's so cool.
