Quick FAQ
>Do I need my own Pokémon to play?
No, the game features a recruitment system, but transferring from Home is recommended to save time and resources.
>What makes the game so much more accessible than before?
All aspects of a Pokémon are customizable with VP, a currency earned simply by playing the game. IVs are also removed.
Ask in the thread if you want any specific Pokémon, and someone will respond.
>Is there single player content?
No.
>Do I need a Nintendo Online subscription?
No.
>What's the starter pack?
US$6.99 one time purchase for 50 training tickets (fully train for free), 30 Teammate Tickets (recruit Pokemon without using VP), 50 extra box space and the LGPE trainer music. Only available on Switch for now.
>Is anything locked behind a paywall?
So far everything gameplay relevant is also purchasable with VP. Only E-Floette require ZA transfer.

All the Salamences I play are bulky as shit. One lived ice beam from milotic, the other lived a dragon pulse from zomp comfortably. What the hell?
>>
>>59645811
Salamence adapted to taking hits and getting good damage across the board now. Some are even running modest with tons of bulk
>>
>>59645811
same thing that happened to charizard and froslass players shifting to bulk over speed/power
>>
>>59645816
Makes you wonder why they don't just start bulky.

Literally the whole meta is just avoiding the mence matchup entirely, boys will adapt
>>
So any interest on a draft league or people still burnt out?
>>
>>59645811
When the meta puts a target in your back, it’s better to go bulky
>>
>>59645811
a competitive boosted Milo or unboosted?
>>
free mythicals
>>
personally i think it's really awesome and fun that depending on its (completely unknowable beforehand) set, sneasler can hit 12/18 of the game's types for massive super effective damage, 13 if you count acrobatics

>stuck in UB2 in BSS

>>
>>59645920

i made it to rank 2 but i'm afraid to lose a game and derank back to 3 before the season ends
>>
>>59645927
>>59645932
nah we need more actually put a def, sp def and speed version of intimidate too
>>
>>59645983
speed intimidate would go crazy

it would never be able to get completely out of control too since trick room counters it, kind of like how competitive/defiant turn intimidate from a strength into a weakness
>>
>>59646005
it would completely fuck any counter tech that isn't either a support mon or a balancemon like scarfers
>>
>redirection would theoretically good into sneasler since it mostly uses single target attacks
>except it has super effective coverage on every redirector in the game (claw on clefable, rock slide on volc/vivillion/scov/ariados, throat chop on sinis and indeedee, cc on maushold)
xd

perhaps running Clef next to a steel mon? CC redirects poorly and You protect against Dire, but that is still a read

What's the answer to the RaichuY/ChompZ team?
Will it be found at Louisville?
>>
>>59646100
Bulky Salamence and good pivoting
>>
Would you mega your Chomp in front of a Raichu? Would you ever think to not on the off chance it wants to Zap your Mega Chomp?
>>
>>59646113
i don't think mence is ever the answer
can it even survive a draco?
>>
>>59646119
it's the strat actually, earth power as base chomp gets STAB
plus you're bulkier
>>
>>59646100
i open volc mence/bax if he kills the dragon volc just runs with the game
>>
>>59646138
it cant live draco but it lives d pulse, and mence teams have slyveon on them to pressure the zomp
>>
>>59646100
Yes. im bringing it to louisville.
>>
>>59646167
Be very vague about the team, but what megas did you settle on. Did you try that Kiran team?
>>
>>59646172
mence raichu (y)
>>
golurk would be such a great ychu counter if he wasn't a shitmon that's barely viable as a mega (trick room only)
>>
>>59646192
golurk has great stats, like a similar stat spread to iron hands. its typing is dogshit though. if we ever get tera back for some reason, he will see some usage.
>>
>>59646195
Unless Chu gets surf it's immune to everything
>>
>>59646195
ghost/ground is pretty bad defensively but it's a very strong STAB combination offensively

the biggest problem is mostly that its ability is kind of a nothing burger, unseen fist doesn't accomplish *that much* post-nerf and half of his good moves doesn't even activate it (eq, poltergeist, etc.) - you'd much rather have something that boosts power

he's kind of like a less bulky ursaluna without guts
>>
>>59646203
So is bulletproof Kommo-O weirdly enough.
>>
>>59646192
Golurk also breaks Sneasler like a twig across it's knee.
Shadow Punch really needs buffed to 70 BP rather than 60. It's enough to turn it into 75% to OHKO (without an item) on bulkier Basc sets.
>>
I didn't play Sword Shield battle spot and know nothing about Gen 8 VGC. Which Pokémon actually preferred Gigantamax over just regular Dynamax?

Pikachu
Lapras
>>
>>59646203
It's weak to Grass Knot
>>
>>59646210
Chesnaught line also. Also like Kommo-o it resists Surf and Grass Knot as well.
>>
>>59646233
Okay well I guess I should reframe the question. Which ones don't prefer it?
>>
>Cinderace
Okay I guess
>>
>>59646443
the few times i've fought that thing it always surprises me with the amount of damage
>>
the more i think about it the more i think choice scarf is actually pretty bad in this meta

tailwind everywhere, turn 0 unburden on the #2 used mon, and swift swim being relatively common mean scarf just doesn't cut it for anything weak to whatever is using those
and once any of those go up you're stuck not even being the fastest thing on the field anymore at the cost of being choice locked
>>
>>59646472
I mean it's the battle pass freebie. I guess they aren't doing Megas anymore so they don't have to give free stones.
>>
I'm looking through past VGC years. People complained about Dynamax in general but honestly legendary spam seems more gay to me. That applies to every generation. Forces of Nature of healthy meta, Urshifu, and box legendaries severely reducing team variety because why the fuck wouldn't you use the big monster with big stats. Every team being basically super Timmy 6 legendaries is disgusting. I get that they do these to shill the current gen legendaries and the DLC that conveniently lets you catch all the old ones but it's still gay. I would rather this game not devolve into that but it probably will.
>>
>>59646100
I built a Kommoo-Mega Gengar team that beats it quite reliably. Probably Rios himself and anyone practicing matchups would destroy me still and I can't really say my team's matchup is good or bad at a high level

>>59646559
So I use incin and sinistcha because redirection is insanely good here, I tried a rilla variant but couldn't get it done. Lastly I got Steelix and ZardY. Please keep in mind that it's a team I crafted with my 50 box spaces and it has room for improvements, but Lix sometimes is the MVP. I use it for Wide Guard and to kill fairies but it's definitely the one i pick the least. Zard is there for weather matchups and gholdengo, and in general when Perish isn't an option. Almost got to MB1 with it then I tried rilla mode and got into a 4 in a row loss streak and I was done for the season

We need more ground types and the best ground types are all sub-legendaries. Garchomp is basically the only decent ground type and that's fucked up.
Give us Landorus, give us TingLu.
If they do that, then we can have Heatran.

>>
>>59647081
Fuck Tera. Enabled so much bullshit to get by.
>>
>>59647081
>>59647091
We know tera is coming to the game based on the first trailer, just a matter of when. It's gonna be fine for open teamsheet, but current closed Bo1 ladder on champions will be fucking hell. Singles will feel borderline unplayable.
>>
>>59647091
It just changes how you need to approach the gameplan, work to get your opponent to burn tera early while you save yours for the endgame.
>>59647098
Singles is garbage on its best day.
>>
>>59647106
I wonder if they're gonna disable megas when tera comes, or you have to choose whether you go in with tera or mega (or let you use both in a battle even)
>>
it feels legitimately impossible to cover for meta threats without using the same 10 mons. Like ZardY + Sneasler invalidates 99% of the roster and forces you to run either chomp or mence unless you want to instalose
>>
>>59647111
I want both useable in a single battle.
It will make tera slightly less unpredictable due to 1 of 4 mons brought to a battle won't be able to use it.
>>
>>59647135
Yeah I'd agree, especially if Z-Moves were added too
>mega, z-move, tera user all in one battle but can't combine mechanics
>becomes a 50/50 guessing game if its not apparently obvious which is the tera user based on the meta
>slightly harder if they choose not to bring a z-move or mega user, but more likely they will than not as it'd be a major disadvantage in exchange for a surprise tera
>>
>>59647187
They could also just fix this with an OTS ladder.
Make it Bo1 if they feel Bo3 would take too long.
>>
Tera is pretty easy to predict 90+% of the time desu. The only set that even semi consistently got me was tera ground CSR.
>>
i'll take extreme speed dragonites and ghost archs over zardy any day to be quite honest

>>
>>59647056
The Ruinous quartet are a mistake in general. I'd love to see singles of group legends get added because Ting Lu? Maybe, but Wo Chien alone feels not strong enough to be better for the balance. Perhaps Ting Lu without Ass Vest is more palatable.
>>
>>59647195
I never accepted the premise of "we need open teamsheets for tera variance". I think if it weren't for social cliques spoiling sets closed team sheets are king. Hence a big reason I prefer online competitions
>>
>>59647275
i would like wo chien to manage all the fucking sliding rocks
>>
>>59647053
You can drop body press
Everything you hit with fighting is already weak to ground or steel, and everything he already struggles to hit like pelipper laugh at body press.

Thanks. I can picture Wide Guard is great to try and stop Rock Slide flinching from fucking you up.
Spitballed this idea for a TR team but I'm not sure if I'd put a mega on Mence for a side strat or something else.
Also considered swapping Sinestcha and Indeedee for Farig/Rillaboom but the rest didn't seem to come together without a 2and TR setter. Ghost would fit well on that teambuild. I have a fondness for Cofagrigus but idk if he'd do enough.

I feel like wide guard is pretty necessary, its nice to avoid getting your slow guys flinched down like you said

>I'm not sure if I'd put a mega on Mence for a side strat or something else
honestly dragon/flying is really good for the team since it resists everything steelix is weak to and vis-versa. a previous version of my team had salamence but i would end up going mega steelix for a majority of games so i cut him.

>Also considered swapping Sinestcha and Indeedee for Farig/Rillaboom but the rest didn't seem to come together without a 2and TR setter.
i'd avoid building steelix hard TR desu. Most games I don't even bring TR because of indeedee and the fact that dedicated TR teams will have guys slower than steelix. However, putting farig on the top of the team makes people bring things like gambit which steelix eats for lunch.

>I have a fondness for Cofagrigus
i also ran cofag instead of farig for a while, and while he's a good TR setter, he doesn't put enough pressure on guys that threaten the team like farig's psychic and tbolt does. and i dont like relying on ally switch or doing iron def strats.

i like rillaboom because he answers water mons that the team hates way better than sini

Ally switch shenanigans, bulky trick room setter, makes Kingambit live up to its name as a blessed gambit that is immune to fighting moves, can pack a bit of a punch when needed with Poltergeist, can make gambit into a mon that has no resists by spreading ghost type to opps, sometimes gets to set trick room twice if you can get it in healthy on a fairly non threatening duo to it like rillaboom and ychu

I'm not saying you should use that exact spread, but it is a decent allocation of stats since the boosting nature is best used for highest base stat while the EVs are best spent on its weakest attributes and whatever it needs to outspeed.
Then you start to moderate your desires from there because you often can't have your cake and eat it too.

the downside is that the screener is kind of a brick after it's done
>>
>>59648280
constant switching for weather control, I had roar swamp + vanilluxe and he had zard-toed, we both had screens
x2 boosted volc with lefties spamming struggabug to stay alive, arch never got enough boosts and volc can't quite KO in rain+screen pic rel is the turn where I finally kill arch with bax but the whole turn took up the minute
>>
>>59648284
oh and grimm kept parting shotting volc so I couldn't dancedance to a win
>>
>>59648278
>>59648281
the other downside at least for the archaludon team is that it's slow as hell
grimm setting both screens and parting shotting into the rain setter takes 3 whole turns, which is an eternity by vgc standards
>>
>>59648281
it really depends on what you have, like if it's sableye you can still pull some bullshit especially since you're (usually) immune to fake out bullshit, plus looming with encore to punish most protect spammers trying to stall it out
though i will admit that it all strongly depends on if you call the right startup matchup

what does your team run to get rid of pesky flamethrower zarchomps?
arch can't stay in on the earth powers/dracos and they constantly lead with rillaboom so politoed ice beam is also not really reliable either
>>
>>59648634
Usually Gambit Scarf Raptor and Farig. Rillaboom gets cucked by Armor Tail, Final Gambit lets me get a free swap - Chomp is usually dead from this, but worst case scenario if I swapped in Politoed too:
>32 SpA Garchomp-Mega-Z Flamethrower vs. 32 HP / 2 SpD Golisopod-Mega in Rain: 88-108 (48.3 - 59.3%) -- 97.3% chance to 2HKO

I played this game long enough that I'm sick of these monthly challenge series. I know it's my fault for forcing myself to play all 45 matches even though I end up losing 2/5 of them all the time. When I can just do the 3 minimum and collect the prize. I think what bothers me is unlike just the normal ladder you're forced to play by the tournament's time which is not a lot of time. 15 matches is a long time easily over an hour you have to dedicate each day or 4 to 5 hours if all on the last day. Doesn't help that I'm sick of BSS. There are so many shit eating weaselly tactics you don't get in doubles. And I can't build a proper team there for the life of me.

Can anyone give me some feedback/recommendations for this team? Not new to competitive, but first time in over a decade that I'm playing. I'm considering replacing Stomping Tantrum on Grapploct with Payback, but I'm imagining that Storm Throw is almost always gonna do more than Payback against Indeedee or Farigiraf. Open to full on replacements for some mons. I like Kangaskhan more than I thought I would, but my biggest issue is physical normal stab kinda sucks (forced to use Double Edge)

I got to Ultra Ball after about 5 hours of play, not that it matters with how ranking up works and since most people say Masterball 3 is where games really get hard.

Should I drop Kanga for something else? Doing you think its worth adding a Fire type potentially swapping out potentially Pelipper/Arch or those two and Kanga, maybe even just swapping out Pelipper and leaving Rain Dance on farigiraf for Arch/weather control? I think I've done pretty well so far, most of my losses have been from dumb mistakes when I was tired like leading Farigiraf and Mawile, protecting Mawile when people will 9/10 times double attack farigiraf. Biggest concern right now is I don't know how this team will do vs Golisopod and if I should consider rock slide over Iron Head for Mawile

after mathing it a bit, i have determined that the absolute worst speed tier possible is base 62

it's just barely slow enough that it's physically impossible to ever outspeed jolly unburden sneasler with choice scarf and tailwind, but fast enough that you at best speed tie torkoal with iron ball and are faster than the vast majority of hard TR mons without it

Primarina makes it work. If you think of base 100 as the target, it out slows it in trick room and out speeds it in tailwind. It naturally outspeeds trick room Pokémon without trick room up so you can out maneuver hard trick room if you can prevent it from being set up. Of course you're never going to out speed the edge cases. That's what trick room is for. Who runs the extremes of fastest and slowest out on the field at the same time?

>>
>>59650731
How has this worked for you? I'm trying to understand what the Blaziken is for. I used Golurk with that weird Vanilluxe team a while back. I recently converted it to a Camerupt team. Still using Vanilluxe.
>>
>>59650764
blaziken is there to kick gambit ghold arch and rilla out of TR, and getting the jump on the crazier speed tiers
doing ok with it so far though I think it needs a milotic check
>>
>>59650766
In general it does seem water weak. When I used Golurk Kingambit was no problem. Most were chople berry and Golurk out slows so headlong rush clears it out. Same with Gholdengo. Archaludon usually needed helping hand. Though now I'm using Camerupt which clears all of them without the drawbacks.

I keep bringing Vanilluxe up but it actually fills the role your Drampa does almost exactly. It's sashed, it clears weather with snow, blizzard for surprisingly good spread move damage, freeze dry to nuke rain staples, aurora veil for support. Bonus it scares Salamence and Garchomp away from most matches and comes with rage powder if they do have them in the back. It's okay at handling Milotic.

Does your team have trouble getting trick room up?
>>
>>59650792
Getting TR up is no problem just that golurk gets completely raped by the meta mons even under TR so it's hard to get going anyway. currently looking for the 6th mon who can patch up some holes.
seeing everyone explode from headlong is funny tho

Poltergeist took care of Delphox and Froslass and surprisingly Sylveon. I had Vanilluxe and Primarina for Staraptor. Out of all M-C inclusions I think it struggles most with Rillaboom.
>>
>>59650847
pod 4mss isn't that bad if you build around it well

if you need more than STABs, 1 coverage/priority, and protect or swords dance then there's probably a weakness somewhere else on the team you're relying too much on pod to patch up

Steel Roller needs an increase in base power.
I've been using in as tech on M-Steelix. It puts terrain users on the back foot for sure, but as a move that you can only reasonably expect to click on once, 130 bp is underwhelming. Especially once you run calcs against common setters. Max attack Steelix under sand misses out on OHKO against both max physical bulk Indeedee-F as well as bulky Rillaboom variants. Grassy Seed Rilla survives even a Helping Hand boost.

I can only make reads off obvious flowcharts or responses anyone would do (like Charizard in front of Glimmora), I can never seem to outplay a master. Is there a mindset to better play the prediction game or is this 100% game sense and practice that builds intuition?
What I do know is reading by its nature is a gamble, it's a trickstab you do not want to rely on lest the enemy sees it coming or recognizes your own striking patterns.
>>
>>59651243
How about it's only half power with no terrain? Like a Knock Off

The time to make hard reads is when things are going poorly. Play normally if you're winning, because every hard read is a massive risk that you need to weigh against the reward.

consider all of the options available on any given turn and pick the response that has the least bad outcome if you're wrong rather than the one with the best outcome if you're right

e.g. glimmora has tailwind in front of a charizard that just protected
it's very likely that charizard will switch out, you get some chip damage on the switch in, and they get some chip on glimmora with the venusaur or whatever's next to it

now, if you switch out glimmora knowing charizard switches out, you could get the jump on the next switch in with a better matchup, but if you're wrong and he stays in and attacks for some reason, now your switch in gets fried to a crisp and your charizard check just left the field

the only reason to go for hard reads over risk minimization is if you're playing from behind and it's the only way to win, or if you're preserving a pokemon that is absolutely required to check something else later (e.g. if glimmora had already been taken to low HP and is your only answer to the sylveon coming in later, then you can't risk it staying in and dying on the turn charizard switches out)

I cant seem to get a connection on my switch right now. I will get back to you in a bit!!
Also I would like to trade for a Golisopod as well, been having pretty bum luck with the recruiting. I should be able to get a better connection at the venue.
Anybody else here playing in side events today btw?

The real trick is to make plays that still give you some advantage even if they don't work out optimally. You not targeting the charizard slot wasnt the wrong play because you predicted wrong, it was the wrong play because even if they switched in a steel or fighting or ground type to eat the power gem, they still take the damage and they are closer to KO range for a different attack, so you still wanted to target that slot whether they switched out or not. Not switching out the Charizard was the right play, not because they predicted right, it was the right play because if you did target the zard then whatever they bring in as a better answer to Glimmora gets to come in with max HP. If they made the switch they have a higher chance of still winding up in a situation where Charizard is out against a Glimmora with a speed advantage.
You chose the play that was extreme high risk with low reward instead of no risk and high to medium reward, they chose the safer play.

Hot take, I don't mind if the Choice Specs and Band stay gone. It's nice having a somewhat slower pace where, if you want big damage, you need setup or synergy. Life Orb is just right where it's enough damage to turn 3HKOs to 2HKOs, but not enough that it turns a lot of 2HKOs into OHKOs.
>>
>>59651725
The $50 a year gives you like 1000 spaces and 18 team slots.

To be fair poltergeist can do a ton of work too and Ursaluna can't do that. Plus Ursaluna gets raped by Raichu focus blast.
