Notes:
-All trainers would be in the background like red (maybe you could do something with rei)
-down special to change mon
-some choices were made based on them being easier to implement
(geodude over onix ) example
-many characters will have alt characters option (volo as cynthia alt) example
plusle+minun would play like ice climbers

who would you main and who would you add
trainer+what pokemon (3 max)

Why do some protagonist have 3 pokemon and others only 2?

Id main Rei and add Acerola

I don't see the point in Pokemon being locked to specific trainers if they'd function the same way Red and Leaf do in Smash. Why are the gen 7 and 9 protags missing from the roster? And why is the only Paldea Pokemon Meowscarada who belongs to a trainer not even from the games?

Your premise is flawed, instead of Pokemon being tied to specific trainers, every player should be allowed to choose their own team of 3 Pokemon from the entire Pokemon roster of said game. The trainer can just some custom character, does not matter since in Smash Bros, the Pokemon trainer himself is just some asshole in the background, he cannot actually do anything in game so I do not care who it is and I doubt most people do either.
I think the real question after that is should the team of 3 Pokemon share damage and stocks, like they do in smash, or should they each have one individual stock and separate damage counters. 2nd option would be interesting, though it might lead to less choice team comp in competitive play.

I mean even in your roster image, the trainers themself take up more space than their Pokemon, when you are actually controlling the Pokemon in game not the trainer. Do you not see how that is poor UI design?

Pokemons being exclusive and not mix and match allows them to be balanced around each other, letting the player choose will just lead to people choosing the best ones with very little drawbacks.
