Another point to be added is that the more banal themes the franchise keeps introducing, the more "kiddie" the presentation is gonna come off. The originals were simple and left a lot open for projection, for kids and teens alike. You're just a dude heading off into the world to tame some monsters and become a master. That allows for more casual, rugged, street type clothes, boxier silhouettes, things that are still considered archetypally "cool" or "masculine" at least. It was also highly competitive, before they started hammering in the "friendship" angle. Ironically, the more "themes" you introduce (I'm thinking of Sun and Moon) the more stylistically limiting the game is from a fashion standpoint, and the more on-the-nose and kitschy your aesthetic choices have to be. Lucky enough for B&W (its theme being "America" and all) Hilda was able to score a fashionable outfit that fit the time period and looked good. The male protag, not so much (the ONE time when skinny pants would actually be appropriate). All this to say, there's just a fundamental change in design sensibility, away from "cool", and towards a more kiddie, saturday morning anime-esque identity. Obviously that was purposeful, due to the popularity of the LITERAL saturday morning anime, but that's just the point. I wish everyone would stop beating around the bush and pretending that the franchise didn't stop being "cool", it just went from one type of "cool", to a newer type of "cool", because it didn't. Pokemon went from being "cool", to being a really marketable franchise, which isn't the same thing (lest you want to argue that "COCOMELON" is somehow cool due to its popularity). Cool things CAN be popular, but in order to be GLOBAL CHILDREN'S PROPERTY POPULAR, you have to sand off all the edges, I don't think anyone would argue with that, that's literally how businesspeople think, and Pokemon is a huge business. The protags/games became less "cool" because the company values universal brand strategy.

Because if it's not in a financial sense, and honestly that's all these companies care about because they exist to make money, then Scarlet and Violet and Sword and Shield are just behind Red, Green, and Blue, so Florian and Victor worked fine enough for those buying the games.
