In the originals you could throw ice punch onto whatever you wanted and steamroll the fight, and you had badge boosts to correct any stat discrepancies. In HGSS you aren't bereft of options. Ice beam exists but does require some minesweeper grinding which is inherently a gate compared to just buying punch. Jynx exists with blizzard but the low pp and high miss chance make it a gamble. Lapras, Mamoswine, and Cloyster are strong, but the former two don't want to be flinched to death with HGSS's new movesets and the latter hates taking a special attack. There's also avalanche as a solo tm, but the move necessitates risking a flinch to get off by design.I've played Johto so many times across all versions and HGSS Lance feels way tougher even with a player's team in the 40s than GSC Lance does with a team in the 30s.
