it came out in the dlc era, and at the time there were crazy rumors about a switch "stars" extended edition. these together kind of fucked it

>>59671856All of the previous third versions are overrated for 90% of the additions they made. Saying this as someone who has Platnium as their favorite game in the series. That being said I do generally enjoy USUM’s additons more than its predecessors. On the other hand I think it has the biggest sense of missed opportunities. I appreciate that it at least attempted to make the game somewhat more challenging even if it’s still a Pokemon game. I’d say it’s one of the better 3D games.
>>59671856The problem is it's still forcing you to pick between two incomplete games. Emerald had Groudon AND Kyogre. Platinum had Dialga AND Palkia. In this game you still only get one legendary, except you also get a Cosmog... which can only evolve into the same legendary you are already guaranteed to have because it's a mandatory catch. They should have made it so you can get the opposite legendary by evolving Cosmoem depending on the time of day, instead of arbitrarily restricting it to specific games.

Tbh the battle and post-game improvements were great and I'm of the minority that, Lusamine aside, actually considers Ultra an improvement. But I doubt most people got to that point due to the insufferably long dialogue scenes which can't be skipped (plus $40 for what should and could have been DLC for half that price in a point in time where DLC had long since become standardized, even for 3DS games, would turn a lot of people off when the first 5 hours of the game are spent mashing through dialogue and barely getting to experience any ULTRA CHANGES besides a few battles with the blue skins, a few OST changes and a few locations on Melemele with better colors on the environment).Even for as much as I love these games (and base SM) I would never EVER play them on official hardware simply for how long and drawn out things are anytime someone is talking. And I'm genuinely surprised that to this day GF have yet to implement at the very least, a Fast Forward option for dialogue, much less an outright Skip option, like almost every other text heavy RPG out there.

Like removing the scene where you and Lilie go to the Exeggutor island for no actual reason and kinda just not explaining whatever was wrong with Lusamine and skipping her in favor of the Necrozma stuff
story wise, the games suffered the worse. Gameplay wise, there was no issue. Though I wish I could recommend people just one game. like platinum instead of saying diamond or pearl. they get the gameplay improvements AND better story with Platinum. But with gen 7 it's either you get a better one or the other... it's frustrating seeing as its my favorite generation and honestly the last good generation before dexit and all the other downgrades

USUM makes some definite improvements, but nothing on the level of Platinum, which would have been fine, but considering the insane amount of textboxes in SM/USUM people were probably just expecting more to make them play through the game again.
