Serious post, sometimes it feels like Pokémon is a bit of a laughing stock in JRPG communities, but I think it's undeserved, at least for the older games. I mean, setting difficulty aside perhaps, the exploration in Emerald, Platinum, or HGSS is great. They're packed with minigames and optional content that other JRPGs can only dream of (the closest thing that comes to mind is FF7's Gold Saucer, but that's an exception). As for the story? Honestly, I don't think other JRPGs have such amazing plots anyway, it's not why I play, and even in terms of exploration, I'd take Mt. Coronet over old FF dungeons any day. I don't know, I just think they get unfairly hated on.

Pokemon does one thing right compared to other jarpigs and it's party customization.

"Pokemon isn't a real JRPG!" has always been SMTroon cope because their dogshit IP is mogged in battle complexity, depth, character design, creature design, map design, and music by Pokemon Monsters.

It's the greatest turn based series ever made, meanwhile smtrannies became irrelevant in their own franchise by a faggy highschool spinoff lmfao

What's a JRPG
>>
>>59673500
There's some guy over on /vr/ right now having a melty about how "Pokemon sucks" and it should "be more like Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh" and how it being an RPG was to its detriment as a series overall. He is having like a serious meltdown over it. It's kinda hilarious. He seems to have a hateboner specifically about Pokemon being an RPG because he thinks it makes "all the games the same shit over and over" and that there's no replayability and how he'd rather the games be a fighter that makes all Pokemon viable. He suggested they make it like Smash Bros. I replied a couple times but he seems insistent on his crusade against Pokemon, it's like the franchise mindbroke him by merely existing. Quite fascinating.

I haven't played any other RPGs aside from the first two Paper Marios so I cannot comment on how Pokemon compares to other JRPGs. I don't think it's trying to be like others so there's no point in focusing so hard on whether or not the story is riveting or in depth, it's a monster collecting game with a story to help you decide which monsters to collect along the way, simple and fun. I do think it gets too much flack as well.
>>
Why are you acting like anyone has ever disliked Pokemon emerald
>>
>>59673522
im not gunna lie pokemon for all its faults, especially classic pokemon, is one of the most replayable games ever made.

>Party members have no dialogue
>Party members don't have their own arcs and quests
>Party members have no real personality
>No equipment
>No MP management
>Static unanimated sprites
>Very slow battle animations
>Worse art for their respective era
>Sticking to a grid on GBA and 3DS where other games have free movement
>EV, IV, Natures and breeding cancer that is absent from superior JRPGs
>This cancer replaces strategic character building mechanics from some JRPGs like Etrian Odysse.
>MMO style time limited events for some reason
>Buy two editions of the same game AND two consoles to complete the dex
>Release superior edition of the same game 2 years later so players have to buy it again
>Mogged to hell and back by its own spinoff titles
And the generic old "kill the demon lord" is still better than "Get all 8 gym batches and beat champion". The way it's framed the gym challenge is less like being a traveling gladiator champion and more like a kid in a theme park with no danger.
>>59673508
8 party members with dialogue, personalities, tons of animations and distinct gameplay styles, strengths and weaknesses are better than 649 generic ones.
Generic JRPG wins here.

Exactly, the endless variety in monsters and movesets makes it fun to replay. Challenge yourself with a monotype team or mix it up, no evolved Pokemon, etc. The guy in the thread I mentioned, when someone said what I just said here (about there being so many monsters, therefor making it replayable) had some stupid reply about how none of the Pokemon actually matter and no actually it's not replayable at all. His loss I guess.
>>
>>59673522
>He suggested they make it like Smash Bros.
In all fairness, Pokemon in the current year should be real time combat. There's no excuse, GF are just terrible developers.
>>
>>59673570
Go back to /vr. We know who you are.
>>
>>59673553
it only matters what pokemon you use in compfag scenarios. stupid bullshit challenge runs are way cooler than the autism grind imo but thats beside the point. if you CANT have fun with gen 1-3 at least then youre just a no fun having faggot. after that idk theres probably some arguments to be made
>>
>>59673777
>if you CANT have fun with gen 1-3 at least then youre just a no fun having faggot.
I can have a great time with even a mediocre game of a genre I like.
But I cannot enjoy the gen 1-3 games.
>>
>>59673788
why not? legitimately the only thing i can see that actively harms them is no physical special split and some really arbitrary stupid shit like gen 1 psychic and some johtomons being in kanto. maybe the hoenn story being completely retarded but thats every pokemon game after so thats a moot point if thats the case
>>
>>59673788
Then you have no taste. More than likely though you are lying and just ragebaiting like the swine you are.

I don't go to /vr/. Just saying that the old turn-based combat system was always deeply flawed and mainly a consequence of its time + hardware limitations. It was excusable back in the handheld era, but if GF wants to charge us $80 for 3D console games then they should give us the full 3D console experience and design battles the way they were meant to be.

>Just saying that the old turn-based combat system was always deeply flawed and mainly a consequence of its time + hardware limitations.
Pokemon literally has the turn based combat in the genre.
>>
>>59673500
I took me a while but I realized I don't actually like JRPGs that aren't Pokemon or Dragon Quest. Maybe I've just played the wrong JRPGs but Pokemon and DQ are the only ones that make me feel like I'm on an adventure and not just watching a story play out in front of me.
>>
>>59673510
I worked this out earlier on in this decade reading their copes posted in /v/, /vg/, and /vrpg/. They literally have never proven greater complexity.

Not even warpigs have a case for better battle systems. Look at Wizardry 8, for example. Still mogged by competitive Gen II, III, hell even I.
>>
>>59673864
Honestly same, i always liked that sense of adventure in pokemon, the only two other games where i felt something similar were DQ9 and FF7
>>
>>59673570
>>59673820
There is nothing inherently wrong with turn-based combat.
>>
i think is because pokemon is baby first rpg
>>
>>59673875
same thing critics of Halo say about it, and yet...
>>
>>59673875
Whatever helps you cope over Pokemon mogging your favorite series.
>>
i like turn based combat because i can stop and think about my moves instead of constantly mashing attack buttons
>>
>>59673872
All games eventually become turn-based RPGs. The default favorite game of the majority of the public is a turn-based RPG.
>>
>>59673522
kek what a kwab
>>
>>59673820
How would you suggest they implement real-time and real-space combat, then? It'd probably be awful just like in Legends Z-A.
Also the line
>like they were always meant to be
Is hilarious to me because the developers set out from the start to make a turn-based game and were explicitly influenced by turn-based games like dragon quest and SMT. The idea that turn-based combat is outdated and only ever existed due to a technical limitation, rather than simply being the most natural fit for RPG systems, has completely ruined series like Final Fantasy, where literally every real time FF game would be orders of magnitude better if it was just a traditional turn-based jrpg.
>>
>>59673500
Emerald and Platinum are not "older" Pokemon, that completely undermines the many changes they made from Red and Blue
>>
>>59673525
You are young. Gen 3 was the most polarizing generation until around 2015
>>
>>59675649
You can consider even Gen 1 or 2, the point is, Pokemon isn't the "black sheep" of JRPGs IMO, far from that.
>>
>>59673536
>wall of nothingburgers
Why does it matter my pikachu doesn't talk?
Stupid post. Pokemon doesn't need to be exactly like other jrpgs.
>>
>>59676165
this, I never understand why some people want all games and series to be the same.
