I consider this less early installment weirdness and more Ash getting flanderized to have extremely generic anime protagonist traits.Be was also attracted to Misty in the Ghost of Maidens peak, for some reason bringing that up causes shipping fights but it's obvious. Either way, Ash is not the same character as the episodes move on..

The orange islands episodes still have Ash get jealous when Misty shows interest in another guy. The Johto seasons have him actually yell at Brock over his girl antics. Ash being totally oblivious to romance is a late stage character trait
