Ash's character was completely ruined in gen 2 onwards making him a boring ageless self insert for the audience when that obviously wasn't the case in earlier episodes. He only "Worked" because of the loose idea that he *was* that scrappy little boy
Liko is hot but they made her design slightly less hot later so the rating declined

A sequels to XY&Z where Ash travels with Brock & Serena to find a way to erase the remaining Dark Vines would have more interesting than the entire main story of Horizons. Especially if Serena gets a new hairstyle with even bustier figure and a new personality to develop a natural chemistry with Ash who reverts back to his OS-DP personality.Because people give more dam about Amourshipping than the entire story revolving Rakulium, Liko & Amethio's magic bloodline, Roy's goal to catch Rayquaza and Navi's wanting a dream.
