A thread for the creation and discussion of fan fiction and other fanworks - anything that involves a story and/or reading. What've you been reading? What've you been writing? What would you like to see more of?

>Thread question:

It's the Dwemer during the Battle of Red Mountain where they collectively realized they were figments of a dreaming God's (capital G) dream and through that caused their race to stop existing in the dream. The only remaining Dwarf was a guy who was exploring a different reality at the time so he was unaffected and doesn't know exactly what was happening, though he got infected with the disease spread by having an imperfect knowledge of the falsehood of reality at a later point and now is a fatboy in a spider walker.

What do you mean by this?

>>59690904
Honestly, I feel like training arcs seem redundant as a concept because ideally training would be happening as part of the whole story. Like in DBZ there is no training arc(?) because martial arts training is part of the overall concept of the show. This especially goes for Pokemon when the average plot focuses on Pokemon Trainers who train pokemon. Integrating engaging training into the natural flow of the story should be an inherent goal.

I'd say the way Goku gravity trains on the way to Namek and everything with the Hyperbolic Time Chamber are mini training arcs.

Even in martial arts stories there can be value in really dialing-in on the training for a bit; it can up the stakes, justify a sudden increase in power, provide exposition to the reader/watcher, and even help with pacing if it's done right.

Yeah but your picture illustrates my point. What jobs are being replaced here? A human isn't going to be providing direct electrical power to a sign like the magnemites, he isn't going to be hauling around steel beams, and if his job is to do nothing but hold a flashlight then I don't know what to tell you. Now being a painter is a legitimate job, but then you also have to consider that all these pokemon need trainers and managers.

To Live is To Dream finally got to two badges and should take a solid week and a half to read unless you're no lifing it.
https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/to-live-is-to-dream-sinnoh-pokemon-trainer-quest.979188/
Premise is a homeless street urchin with suppressed psychic potential in an older abandoned section of Jubilife finds out trainers on their first journey get a free daily meal at Pokecenters. She has quite a bit of backstory that gets revealed slowly through the writing.

Setting is more grounded than official media. A frayed utopian Sinnoh, more of a G1/G2 feel with the crime and grime. People being people, the good and bad y'know? An overall good society with assorted criminals, clans clinging to power, and a cult trying to undermine everything. Pokemon in setting are all sapients with their own inhuman psychology. They've built their own parallel society of norms that vary region to region.
Still keeps the feel of Pokemon with all that.

Length is mostly due to being a true journey fic. Its got a shitload of sidequests and isn't A-B-C badge and galactic scalp hunting.

funnily enough someone was porting it over to AO3 recently, got just past the first badge before the site went tits up
if you're fully AO3-brained, I think some of the tags were: Chunnibyou, Feral Behavior, Raised by Wolves, Chaos Gremlin, Psychic Abilities, Childhood Trauma, Grimbright, Unreliable Narrator

You know reading Blood Meridian finally tells me what all this 'the man' business in SELLOUTS is about. Stylistically that is, maybe it really is the MC dissociating but I think SELLOUTSfag should have gone all the way with aping the format of Blood Meridian. I say this as someone who's received similar advice about formatting recently.
Really referring to Andrew as 'the man' seems even more awkward and clumsy now.

The Beedrill got so horny at seeing its master wield a knife that looked like one of its stingers it prematurely ejaculated on the knife, which caused it to get sticky and got his master arrested.
Beedrill is crying because it prematurely ejaculated and looked like an idiot.
The female (futa) cop is crying because she's remembering how she fumbled her first love by cumming too quickly.

***

“Let me see if I get what it means to be Leaf Juniper,” Dr. Sotala says. “If I may?”
“Please.” Leaf smiles. “If you do, you might be the first.”

“I, Leaf Juniper,” Dr. Sotala begins, “Believe that pokemon suffering is as important as human suffering. In practice I accept that humans have more intelligence and agency, and so have the ability to affect the world in ways pokemon don’t, but this power comes with a responsibility to be good caretakers of pokemon, the same way humans feel a responsibility to be good caretakers of children.” (...)

“With some exceptions, most people believe the suffering of human children should be reduced, in theory at least. Children are the ultimate innocent, and in most humans we have a part that believes deeply that innocence matters, and bad things should not happen to good or innocent people. ... Many people do not feel this with pokemon, who are considered threats first… but they should, because pokemon are no more responsible for their actions than human children are, and so long as they’re made harmless, the acceptable amount of suffering for both should be equal.” (...)

“I, Leaf Juniper, believe that for most pokemon, life with a trainer who treats them as a friend or family member is better than life in the wild, even if used to battle wild pokemon. Because dying painfully in the wild is the default, they have a better chance of a longer, happy life with a trainer… even with the added risk of occasionally fighting wild pokemon.”
>>
>>59693819
>because pokemon are no more responsible for their actions than human children are

>>
>>59693819
Children are little shits though
>>
>>59693819
No, that's kinda stupid. They're animals, pokemon, a different standard applies. They kill each other all the time and some individuals and species can have cruel personalities. Besides that there's no reason for a species, humans in this case, to give another priority over themselves.
Eliminating unnecessary suffering is good and all but unless it's something really fucking smart and helpless like a whale, I think normal environmental regulations are fine.

>>

>but they should, because pokemon are no more responsible for their actions than human children are, and so long as they’re made harmless, the acceptable amount of suffering for both should be equal.
This is the biggest issue with the attempt to treat all pokemon the same, even discounting major legendary ones that are capable of fundamental changes to the world that would lead to humanity's extinction, there are hundreds of species capable of harming humans easily and within them species that do it on purpose
The problem is that this assumption is that ALL pokemon are inherently good AND that they are incapable of reflection, both of which can easily be proven to be false unless you

I think thats more dependent on how you define a pro trainer
think major league baseball, those are all pros yeah?
but are all the minor league players pros? AAA, AA, A, Rookie? theres like 8x the number of MLB players in all those
what about the partner leagues? the female leagues? the draft league? the independent leagues? the college leagues?
and this is just for baseball, consider just how many football, basketball, hockey, soccer, hell even racing leagues there are

the numbers start adding up real fuckin quick
>>
>>59694757
>how you define a pro trainer
gym leaders, elite 4, champions and maybe battle facility trainers but only frontier brains, the rest are mindless clones
>>
>>59694554
Every trainer is born with a fixed POTENTIAL score, which determines how high they can train a pokemon's level. The MC was born with SSS rank which is why everyone looks down on them but it's actually the strongest.
>>
>>59694554
Just make them not able to make food in industrial quantities.

Or they can, but those Pokémon are rarer. Or transportation is an issue. Or the food produced isn't perfectly fit for human consumption.
>>
>>59694554
Just because resources are there doesn’t mean that people get them, either through incompetence on one end or you’re dealing with people that can’t be helped. Like perpetual homeless people or crackheads in countries with massive welfare programs, you can have everything there and still fuck up.
My answer to it in fic is that things are a lot cheaper and efficient than the real world but that doesn’t make it free. Paying for Pokemon food is fine for smaller Pokemon without issue but an elite Pokemon is going to consume multiple times more food as a baseline regardless of size. If you want a fancy bag you’re still going to have to cough up a lot of money. So while life is cheaper as a whole it doesn’t mean you don’t need to work for it or that you can afford everything
>>

There are no "AI bros", any drooling retard can now access and use these magical digital genies to do whatever the fuck they want. Hackers, regular criminals, your next door neighbor that learned about AI a week ago. You don't need ANY qualifications or knowledge on what it is, to prompt the machine to do your bidding. EVERYBODY in the world now has access to vastly intelligent homunculi whose entire existence is devoted to solving whatever problem you put in front of them. Do you realize how fucking TERRIFYING that is, even outside an online space? People are already AI generating and 3D printing custom medicine and chemicals. How long until AI drugs, AI engineered plagues, AI-made biological weapons? Every single field benefits from this, every single disgruntled worker in any discipline, evil motherfuckers looking for revenge and to cause harm, and hyper-fixated autists with little to no oversight, all given the tools to advance their goals in silence. The world is a very big place, lots of people across many different cultures and backgroumds, how much fucked up shit do you think people have brewing this very second, in a damp basement somewhere?

Wow! Do you talk to your mother with that mouth William, calling a girl used goods! Also Carolyn calling William out on his perversions is funny. Staying out of it is also another very dad reaction from Soren especially in this very specific type of situation.

It's a bit funny imagining Kadabra using a phone to text.

But man, Soren's dad is funny, I mean I don't really see him and Will as romantic, but I understand how he can come away with that. William is Bisexual after all. It's not like he knows, but he probably does suspect something about the Team Haze business.

Good chapter, but copper hair and dark skin? I think the closest character to that description has been Joyce from the grass-type gym.

who would be the least popular Gym Leader realistically? Besides Giovanni, duh
>>
>>59698439
From Kanto, it would be Surge. Is what I would have said if I didn't just remember that one guy from Alola who built a gym based on his. But Surge in the anime is a dick who bullies trainers and brutalizes their pokemon. Manga Surge is a murderous terrorist. Game Surge is a paranoid war vet. Its implied that he's a soldier from a former occupying enemy nation. Next up would be Brock who is not very noteworthy but he does have that kid who hypes him up in his gyme.

Surge has personality, he's memorable, popular with young men at the very least (his second largest demographic? Middle aged women buying calendars of him shirtless and flexing). The least popular gym leader overall would have to be some literally who from Kalos like the gardener old man.
Least popular in Kanto would probably be Blaine. Who do you think would bring better polling numbers, old scientist in some isolated island, or fit veteran with a quarterback smile presiding over one of the region's major ports? In times of crisis, to MC events, to serve as a face for ads, the League would pick Surge over Blaine every single time. Second least popular is probably Brock, who's stuck in an out of the way town with a museum as it's biggest draw, doesn't have a lot of presence, and doesn't use flashy pokemon.

Its closer to about 1/5th quest stuff
Thing is it really isn't filler in any way. The author hides foreshadowing and has little character moments absolutely fucking everywhere. Sure yeah you could cut down the wordcount in places. But at this point even the goddamn Cooking minigame has its shooters.

So sure yeah there's a 10k word Pokemon Calvinball scene for example. Which gets her no closer to getting another badge.
But its also her first time being in a large crowd since figuring out shes psychic. It reveals just how drunk and out of control she can get off a crowds emotions, all while the first human friend she made since being homeless tried to keep her lid on.
And it was just really funny kid shit, I'm surprised there's never been a similar scene in the anime.
And then mechanically, it was the first psychic control challenge. Everyone had to vote between a series of options, more voters overall improves the benefit, but we also had to maintain a percentage balance between voting options them. Which was an absolute goddamn clusterfuck to organize between what ended up being 262 people.

Or lets look at the latest gym battle. 48k words, but it featured an impromptu concert exhibition followed by what was essentially a Dark Souls bossfight. Because by no sane means can a Sunkern beat a Roserade.
So we went to insane means.
All the while a goddamn battle of wills played out in the background, calling Gardenia to task for her neglect of Eterna Forest (which is an Xianxia Hellscape) due to just how busy she is.
It was 48k words of goddamn Peak.

Pokemon take a LOT more punishment before fainting, occasional spectator POVs, the battle is effectively a multi-stage puzzle with the goal of trolling the gym leader, a verbal battle in the background, and I included the intro and outro segments as part of the battle.
If nodiffing Gardenia was the objective, we coulda voted for that and genuinely knocked her out in under 6k words. That wasn't the goal, mindfucking her was.

hell I'll break it down further:
3.8k on Intro
4.4k on Magnemite vs Cherubi
5.4k on Magnemite vs Nuzleaf
16.2k on Sunkern vs Roserade Dark Souls battle
3.2k on Outro
15k on voting overhead
All the "thinking" is in the overhead with all the vote options and info.
ain't gonna break it down into what each segment was PoV wise because fuck you read it if you want that

There's only been three major battles like this, this was the longest by far.

You could try skipping some sections but even the training bits reveal character.
The quest format essentially mandates much more Show not Tell. So while Fics can handwave training away for example, a fade to black or such. Quests have to actually show part of it. Not every second, but the setup, the result. A single line "you learn Sanic Boom, you're winnar" won't cut it.
And thus, 323 words is spent learning Roar, partially, but while advancing two character arcs. And that was a Short example.

It really is genuinely excellently written and I think it stands on its own rather well. The voting base is actually increasing as it goes on, and variations of "holy shit I finished reading and this was great" or "I made an account for this" happen regularly. Which you wouldn't expect if people were being filtered by the length or "you just had to be there"-ism. One vote hit 600+ recently, and the non-voting base way outnumbers the voting.
Hell, AO3 was liking the mirror before the site went tits up

>>
It's kinda hard to write around natures without making all pros seem sociopathic by using mints and changing the personality of their partners just for them to punch harder
>>
>>59700397
Then don't include mints.

Yeah, what would they be, some sort of Most Evil Trainer?
>>
>>59700361
remember when Ash's Hawlucha broke a Trick Room by attacking it?
>>
>>59700439
They'd be the scientist trainers from the games, the ones that use x items when you fight them
>>
>>59700397
Mints change the stat distributions, but the flavor preferences of the pokemon remain unchanged.
I interpret this as they don't actually change the pokemon's personality.
>>
>>59700388
I'm too slow of a reader to not look at word count. Unlike many of you I am only mortal and have finite time on this earth, so whenever I try reading something with a huge word count I get distracted because that's a huge chunk of my limited lifespan being spent on one single thing.
>>
>>59700633
You could just use the first sentence to not sound like an asshole next time
>>
>>59700649
Shut the fuck up mankey

I hope you slip on a comically large banana pell causing you to yell "yeowch..." and fall headfirst into an open trashcan filled with fish remains

Hilarious, go figure it was an Indian scraping all the content from AO3 and reselling that as ai slop audiobooks. His on-site poll was '50%' in favor of his service so it was really well received and not a bad idea according to him. Massive izzat loss.
>>
>>59700633
If your time was as precious as you say, you wouldn't be reading pokefics at all
>>
>>59700666
But I like pokefics.
>>
>>59700633
read faster
read so fast you accidentally skip half the chapter and have to waste time re-skimming to figure out if a new name was introduced already and you just missed it or if the author is introducing the character in an odd way
>>
No one owes it to (You) to read your gajillion word vomit monstrosity. Less is more and if you can't confine your fic to typical novel length it just shows you suck dick as an author and are NEVER going to make it
>>
>>59700743
>Impregnates you
Well what are you gonna do now?
>>
>>59700738
I could read faster but setting the internal movie to chipmunk speed only works for comedy fics or straight slop.
>>
>>59700661
Couldn't hate them enough

I got somewhat into cultivation stuff because of these threads, but the one I read to completion, ISSTH, only had 3.3 million words. TLTD is already over half that and it's not even past the third badge.
Just imagining how many words it will have by 8 badges... my cultivation is too lacking to chew through so much fine character growth and journeying. I'd need to contact my local alchemist and get some meth pills to overcome such a tribulation.

No it's because Chinese is shorthand for exotic...

... Unless you mean in an indirect "there'll never be a China region so they might as well" way, then yes.
>>
Okay TLitDfag, I'm going to start reading it tonight after I play some Rain World.
If it ends up not being worth it I'll come to your house and shit all over your favorite plate and cup as revenge.

Blasting through a book at one page a minute, getting only half of it, and then going back through the entire thing more than once is kino. Retain something new every time. If it's not good enough it's not worth a single quick read.

Saar totally thought he was doing the needful and totally not trying to redeem. Honest.
I wish Covid was really as bad as they acted like it was so it could have wiped out India singlehandedly. Their shithole is the ultimate litmus test for whether a plague is the real deal, if india isn't a giant corpse dump then there is no plague.

I don't understand how this is a security risk though? Anyone could still do this
>>
>>59700916
Supposedly saar also got ahold of fics that were never made public, unpublished drafts, etc, implying a database breach
>>
>>59700909
Say the shitter who presumably finger reads one page every five minutes. You'll get faster as you get older. It's okay.

the difference is that I read fanslop on the phone that I also read ifunny posts on whereas actual literature is read from a book

>>
>>59700922
Holy fucking shit this is next level of greed. Was there even a fucking market for this? It's not enough to scrape an entire site, you just HAVE to have the drafts too? This feat merits Israeli citizenship

funny you should say that
the TLTD author actually started a side quest during the current hiatus
https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/an-incense-stick-of-time-cultivation-xianxia-flash-quest.1343190/

>Immortals.

>How many tales of immortals have spread far and beyond? Even in the most distant and foreign of lands, there are rumors and whispers of what exists past the boundary separating the earth and the heavens. Spells of inconceivable power, secrets beyond mortal ken, figures of unfathomable beauty, clashes between heroes and monsters and spirits and gods—these have each been subjects of hearsay time and time again.

>Yet the oldest tale of them all, that even a child could recite by heart, is in the name itself—immortal. A cultivator is a figure who has chosen to cultivate immortality: to break past the limits of time and mortality itself before their own time runs out.

>Very few possess the capability, and even fewer receive the chance. A fraction of a fraction of mortals are born with the ability to absorb and refine the earth's and heaven's dual breath. In that regard, it can be said that you are truly among the most fortunate.

>There's just...a problem. A teensy, tiny issue, really! You see, the average time that a mortal human being must race to extend their lifespan is around sixty to seventy years...

>If only your karma in this life were so profound.

>[ ] Easy Mode: Your body possesses the mortal lifespan of 1 year.
>[ ] Normal Mode: Your body possesses the mortal lifespan of 1 month.
>[ ] Hard Mode: Your body possesses the mortal lifespan of 1 day.

Winner is Glaucus Atlanticus, the Blue Sea Dragon, a weird little sea slug

Enquiry: Do you consider the Life Orb, Flame Orb & Toxic Orb to be artificially made, or are they harvested from a naturally occuring crystal somewhere out there?
>>
>>59701188
Off the cuff I'd say natural, but if I were making the distinction in a story I'd first go on a minimum half hour autistic search for canon evidence pointing one way or the other
>>
>>59700022
Read fics with good battles and copy the macro shit about them. It’s not hard.
