Everybody knows the infamous and stereotypical Sinnoh Pokemon team that lots of people seem to end up building when playing the Gen 4 games (and their remakes, if you count them)

This kind of team is usually something like the following:
>starter (usually Infernape)
>Staraptor
>Luxray
>Garchomp
>Lucario
>other slot that's typically (but not always) an early route mon like Roserade or Floatzel

But what are less commonly used Pokemon that are underrated choices when battling and traveling through Sinnoh that can make a playthrough of the games more interesting? Or different teams in general, if you can think of any?

They don't have to be Pokemon introduced in Gen 4 necessarily. All Pokemon available in the Pokedex that can actually be caught in those games are allowed, including the new additions in the expanded Platinum Pokedex.

And these Pokemon don't have to be 100% good at everything... but just enough to make the Gen 4 games and their remakes a little more fun, so we can get new ideas whenever one of us gets the urge to play the games again.

There’s no team better than THE team sorry

I like to catch a Gligar under the Cycling Road and have a Gliscor on the team. It's one of my favorite Pokemon.

Golduck is pretty good

any sinnoh starter can solo the game
staraptor is overpowered and always worth using, you can do meme shit with drifblim and run some funny setup baton pass stockpile set, or togekiss who is also good but you have to babysit 2 johto shitmons for most of the game
floatzel gyarados is the best pokemon in the game, gastrodon, lumineon needs the good rod iirc which is way later than the other options who are all early game and its worse
luxray is a shitmon magnezone or jolteon are a lot better
gliscor is right next to garchomp and evolves much earlier
lucario idk why that guy is even in the "meme"; all of his good matchups are in the early game, it gets raped by distortion world cyrus and the elite 4, it overlaps with infernape and you have other fighting types available much earlier, gallade, toxicroak, etc.

>>59696296
I unironically used Cherrim when I played Diamond years ago.
>>
>>59696296
No one used Garchomp and Lucario, they take too long to get up to speed.
Luxray is only used because it's an early Electric type. There are several better options down the line.
I always thought Gastrodon was better than Floatzel. I prefer the water/ground typing.

Gardevoir, Gallade, Houndoom, Togekiss, Drapion, Toxicroak, Rotom*, Vapreon, Weavile, Mamoswine, Jolteon, Gliscor, Hippowdon, Probopass, Drifblim, Leafeon, Rampardos

Go wild

This was my Sinnoh team, except of course EMPOLEON instead of Greninja.
A team so unbelievably solid that it not only became the backbone of my secondary team, but also suffered next to NO CHANGES WHATSOEVER. What it took to change it was a Water-Dark type starter, my favorite types, on a FROG NINJA, Frogs being my favorite animal, every inch of my condo is covered in frog decor, and NINJAS being... well they're ninjas. I don't need to explain why they're amazing. At that point, i couldn't help but sigh and apologize to Rico the Empoleon, and release him into the wild because it's inhumane to keep pokemon you'll never use again in a PC.

EVERY teammate here is precious and has stories of victory I remember fondly.
What do you think of my team?

bastiodon and a bag of m&ms
>>
>>59696413
it's interesting and every time I see someone unironically use Pachirisu on their team I immediately remember that dude Sejun Park who used it to win the Pokemon Worlds tournament years ago lol
>>
>>59696441
I've only ever used a Pachirisu in Gen 4 to pickup farm stones and shit in the postgame
>>
>>59696452
It's really good, Especially in Kalos where it gets Nuzzle, and Low BST pokemon make kalos more fun. That way you can run AssaultVest.
Paralysis, super fang to half and quarter HP, and your choice of flinch move to go on these insane tears where pachirisu can fell MIGHTY opponents by paraflinch refusing to let them move. It's an emotional rollercoaster every time. From there, you can run HP Ice for ground types or double team to abuse cheese.
>>
>>59696357
How was it?
>>
>>59696296
I've typically used Empoleon, Staraptor, Bibarel, Roserade, Alakazam and Luxray in my DP playthroughs. In BD I had Empoleon, Staraptor, Luxray, Houndoom, Rhyperior and Toxicroak which worked nicely. I just like my core 3 of Empoleon, Staraptor and Luxray desu
>>
last time i played my team was empoleon, steelix, rotom, dusknoir, porygon-z and tropius
overall not a bad time but tropius kinda stinks, it doesn't really do anything any other team member can't do better

>the infamous and stereotypical Sinnoh Pokemon team that lots of people seem to end up building when playing the Gen 4 games
ah yes, there's even a name for this, the "Sinnoh Six"
>>
>>59696296
Last time I played Platinum I did so with nothing above 425 BST and it was a blast, my final team was Ponyta, Gabite, Chimecho, Wormadam Trash, Yanma, and Azumarill.
Baiting fire moves with Wormadam into Flash Fire Ponyta for a very strong Flare Blitz or two was great, wouldn’t have got past Cyrus in the Distortion World without that tech.
>>
>>59696296
Torterra>Empoleon>Infernape. First playthrough was Tort, I’ve legit never used Infernape.
Staraptor is so fucking good and it takes conscious effort not to use him.
Never used Floatzel.
Used Garchomp once on a replay. Doesn’t feel right to use the final boss myself.
Used Luxray on my first playthrough and never again. He’s not good.
Never used Lucario, not in any gen, and probably never will.
Never used Roserade.
>>
>>59696296
I should probably actually answer the damn question.
Bronzong’s great, surprised nobody’s mentioned it. Really tanky, hits hard enough to count, good moves, available early.
>>
>>59696296
I would probably chalk this up due to the availability of early pokemon.
>Most of the time you catch a starly/budew/shinx early, so you keep that as your starter.
>Whenever you get to floatzel you have a good HM slave, though some might use it as a party mon.
>You get the riolu egg and hatch it, then you probably level it up, why not get lucario too, what are your other fighting type options, meditite?
If you actually get a gible without help finding the hidden cave, you probably level it up as it's dragon type, pretty op in older gens. Most people won't care for the giga-luck trees, or having to change and re-level their teams. In platinum you can get Snorunt, ice/ghost, but it is so Kate game you probably would just not switch it out, despite it being arguably a decent mon in either evolution.

>But what are less commonly used Pokemon that are underrated choices when battling and traveling through Sinnoh that can make a playthrough of the games more interesting?
Lumineon is the certified most forgettable mon in the series and its stats are shitty but it has some interesting utility because it learns a few cool moves like Bounce, U-turn and Silver Wind and that, along with its butterfly-inspired design, is what makes Lumineon stand out as an honorary Water/Bug type and it can be a pretty fun addition to your team if you give it a chance
>>
i like octillery as my surfmon, it has some neat coverage in flamethrower of all things
>>59696604
nta but i used cherrim lately in platinum. it's surprisingly decent, a 90 BP petal dance at level 25 is not bad at all, though it won't be useful every fight. slap a return on it too and it'll hit decently hard with sunny day up
>>
>>59696296
Last time I played Platinum I think I used

>Infernape
>Weavile
>Electivire
>Rampardos
>Staraptor
>Floatzel

The Water types in Gen 4 are kinda ass if we're being real. I would have used Honchkrow, but I didn't want to sack on Dark types.
>>
>>59696296
you could probably break the lategame with togekiss
>>
>>59696296
Fucking NO ONE uses floatzel
>>
>>59700057
i used floatzel
>>
>>59700066
No. you didn't.
>>
>>59700075
yes i did
>>
>>59700066
You used Gastrodon and Gyarados.
>>
>>59700077
Nuh huh
>>
>>59700080
i did use floatzel

>>59700078
i did not use those mons
>>
>>59696296
Spiritomb/Drifblim
>>
>>59696296
Imagine not having Crobat in your team. Bats are better than birds.
>>
The thing about teambuilding in general with people that post their playthroughs (this goes beyond Diamond/Pearl) is that they often times feel the need to use the most optimal options available instead of playing through with more off-the-wall options and then wonder why the games are so easy. Diamond/Pearl are an extreme example of this due to the availability of everything but there are some fun picks even in those games. I don't remember my exact HoF team for it but I definitely remember using Chimecho and Machamp last playthrough of Diamond I did. Also
>I have to use only new Pokemon introduced in this region in game
this is also why people feel so restricted in Diamond and Pearl specifically since gen 4 is closer to gen 2 than it is to gen 3 when it comes to new Pokemon introductions.
