One of those late NES Gameboy ports, and a computerized version of the board game. It's also not the only Battleship-type game on the system, there were two Famicom ones--Battle Fleet and Fleet Commander. There's not a lot of strategy involved here, it's mostly just shooting weapons at enemy ships and trying to guess which direction they're facing in.

i never got the point of these games. the board game didn't require a TV, game console, and expensive cartridge, and it didn't use any electricity.

Had to do it to prove they could I guess. It was still kind of the Wild West days of vidya.

this thing is an absolute slog to play although at least you get a password for each battle you win

Real life multiplayer boardgames require more than one person. Video game adaptations of them, can employ AI to allow even a solitary person to enjoy them.

To be fair, Battleship is only somewhat fun with two players where there's some element of randomness to it. The AI is pretty much garbage.

>Board game

If we're going into that direction you don't need a board game either, just a piece of paper and a pen

Some board game versions also allow you to play against a CPU

How about some middle ground.
Battleship is one of those games that is perfect for an LCD game.
Very little electricity required and worked perfectly for many many years whenever I wanted a quick round of Battleship.

As the OP said it was a Gameboy copypaste port so they just used the same ROM size.

Fleet Commander was CNROM too but there was a reason for that. The game actually had a complete set of board game pieces that came with it you needed to use to play the thing with, and that gimmick was expensive so ASCII (the publisher) had to cut costs somewhere.

the Mexican Runner took over 6 hours to beat Battleship

Given the bottom-spec cartridge hardware that was really all they could do with the game.

Battle Fleet is pretty much just Conflict, but with ships instead of armies.

Yes, that's how Battleship works...
What else is there? You gotta take a guess and when hiting something try to figure out the direction.

I like radar mission. I liked the short little animation that played when you left port at the beginning of a level
