This is essentially a 2D game. Crazy that cinematics were enough for people to call revolutionary a game that with minor changes could have worked on previous gen consoles.
MGS1 still has some of the best voice acting in any video game.
>>12586346well it's not called a VIDEO game for nothing
>a game that with minor changes could have worked on previous gen consolesThat applies to most video games ever made
I like MGS and am not trying to imply console wars but I do remember back in 1998 when a friend showed me MGS for the first time, I was a bit underwhelmed after the hype because I came from playing OoT so I expected a game of similar scope in terms of 3D. I remembee thinking something similar to what OP says, "this is just a top down game with polygons"Of course, later I played it proper and realized how cool it was and how it's its own thing, but yeah first impression didn't wow me
>>12586346Cool. Anyway, it's a timeless masterpiece and you will have to deal with it.
Tenchu is a much better stealth game on PSX. It's also an actual video game unlike MGS.
Actually if you remove the 3D it's 2D. Plus it's basically Pacman! Upvotes and likes!
>>125863463d gives you a lot of flexibility even if something mostly follows 2d logic. ton of tricks mgs1 does that wouldn't have been possible or as effective on a 2d only system.
If it's a 2D game, how come it has the first person mode to look around in 3D? Haven't played it in a while tho so not sure how many times you have to use it or any.
>>12586470It's only the first three stages that require stealth in mgs. After that it's boss fights, back tracking, codec calls and moovies
>>12586346Except for all the times when it isn't, like the Hind and Rex fights.
>>12586569I would include the VR missions as part of the total video game.
Yeah MGS is a soft reboot of MG2: Solid Snake. Most of the ideas are lifted straight from it. But westerners didn't know any better in 1998.
>>12586357>Of course, later I played it proper and realized how cool it was and how it's its own thing, but yeah first impression didn't wow meThat was my reaction, too.At the very least, the title screen (not in the OP pic related, I mean the start menu) looked antiquated, or at least retro. And the overhead perspective, supposedly due to Kojima getting vertigo from other perspectives (e.g., FP), was also a little weird.
>>12586356Ok, make Mario 64 work on SNES then
>>12586832nta but most ≠ all
>>12586574Kojima doesn’t.
>>12586356/thread
MG threads are cancer, much like Saturn and FF7 threads.
>>12586346It plays identically to the Metal Gear games for the MSX that came before it
>revolutionaryNot really.
>>12586346it was literally the first cinematic game that was done right with effort put into all aspects>good plot>good characters>good cinematics>good voice actors>good music>good gameplay>pushing the hardwareit didn't have to be perfect, it just had to be a really really good 9/10 game, and it was exactly that
>>12586346>This is essentially a 2D game.All games on a screen are 2d m8
>>12586346It has FPS view in tight spaces, I guess you don't understand how people got used to 2d limitations and how mind-blowing it was
>>12586346Dumb westerners fall for visual smoke and mirrors and "muh cinematic experience" every fucking time. Same shit with Donkey Kong Country and Ocarina of Time.
Ghost Babel translates the "gameplay" of MGS1 to Game Boy without any issues. But the problem isn't just that the gameplay is fundamentally 2D and antiquated, it's that it sucks and that there's also barely any of it in the game. The entire game features maybe one hour of "stealth" if you are slow about it. It is overwhelmingly a movie game with gimmick "mechanics" that come up once and never again. It is the video game equivalent of a Potemkin village.
>>12586357it's a remake of an MSX game. problem is only the japanese knew that at the time
>>12589994That's every game you nigger
>>12590151IIRC there's like 20 guards in the entire game
>>12590151>It is overwhelmingly a movie gameno shit, it's basically '80s American Action Movie: The (Japanese) Game
>>12590172"Movie game" does not mean a game aesthetically modelled on a movie, but a game that is insecure in its own medium and instead spams pretentious cutscenes and dialogue in a desperate effort to be perceived as cinematic. That is what Metal Gear is, while actual adaptations of movie properties like GoldenEye are much more legitimate games.
>>12590161Nobody can eat 50 wings in one sitting without puking. Even if you're 10 times as obese as Carl.
>>12590173>in a desperate effort to be perceived as cinematic.desperate is out of sync with how wildly successful mgs was.
>>12590297That is after the fact, and Kojima's insecurity about being a game director did not disappear from this.
>>12586616Not at allMGS3 has more shared themes with MG2MG2 is about national identities and allegiances being tested during a pseudo post cold war That’s the entire plot of MGS3: do you exist to serve identity politics, and should those politics even exist
>>12590560>storyfaggotryMGSfags really not beating the allegations
>so cinematic>great gameplay>60% of the runtime is staring at a static codec screen listening to VA read linesfunny how snoyflakes have been falling for moviegame trash since the first console
>>12589487I don’t know if it was THE first, but MGS was certainly the biggest hit at the time to have cutscenes using the in-game character models rather than pre-rendered or FMV. It was pretty amazing at the time to see video game cutscenes directed with Hollywood cinematography.
>>12590571>I play MGS for the gameplay, the VR Missions are superior! Way more cringey than people who enjoy them for the movie like stories, which is of course the main attraction.
>>12589339Yes, especially the sniper wolf fight. Or the Psycho Mantis fight, or the first Liquid fight. This could have been a NeoGeo game, realistically speaking.
>>12590628It was inevitable and Ninja Gaiden was already doing it. In any visual medium where presentation and framing is important because surprise, it's presented in a frame, cinematography will be incorporated just like photography changed how paintings were done. Kojima did nothing revolutionary other than be one of the first to do it in 3D. Kojima loves stealing like how he tried to claim he made a new game type with his stranding bullshit when the Souls games already did that, 10 years prior. He's a charlatan and always has been. Tenchu is a better stealth game than every single Metal Gear game combined.
>>12586346That's most of the PS1 library OP. They're 2D games with a small 3D gimmick. MGS, Crash Bandicoot, Resident Evil, etc.
>>12586346>This is essentially a 2D gameThats most ps1 games
>>12586574do you mean the built in ones, or the entire seperate game?
