Are you guys fans of speed running in retro games? Is it the peak of skill or just a cringe waste of time? Should people do it even though the developers never intended it to be played in such a way?
>>12586895>even though the developers never intended it to be played in such a wayThey definitely intended it to be played that. There are plenty of games with timers on game completion and many, many devs openly stating they designed their games around memo with the intention of competition. This is moreso a modern misconception of people with a very casual interest in games trying to rewrite history.
>>12586915SOME games were designed that way. Others most certainly were not. Despite your little passive aggressive comment at the end perhaps it's you who wants to rewrite history in simple black and white.
>>12586895It's only enjoyable to watch if you understand how the game works
>>12586926SOME people want you to not be a faggot. Unfortunately you fail something so simple.
It's sometimes fun to watch someone do something extremely pointless at a very high level.
I like the Japanese scene, they are usually more consistently more technical and you don't get all the weirdness from western communities, it's just guys playing video games really good and really fast
>>12586895It's a sure fire sign of autism and the elitism these people LARP in is hilarious
>>12586926>SOME games were designed that wayHundreds of games were designed that way.
>>12587170Yes, and that is SOME games out of ALL games released, isn't it?
>>12587172Don't be glib.
Can be interesting but only if no glitches are used. I have no fucking clue why you would watch someone use exploits that skip hours of the game. That shit is lame as hell.
>>12587248That's why those divisions are seperete. Oh you can beat the game quicker doing this? Well HOW quick? It's about finding the absolute fastest way to beat the game even if you break it.
>>12587248Sometimes its fun to see how badly the game can be broken
>>12587248I agree with this. Pretty much all speedruns for 3D games heavily rely on glitches and after a point that's just not interesting to me. I would be much more impressed seeing someone properly go through all the required parts of a game as fast and as skillfully as possible versus clipping through a wall and bypassing everything entirely.>>12587256Unfortunately it's not very consistent. A lot of games have "glitchless" categories but aren't actually glitchless, they just disallow the super egregious glitches that let you get to the credits in like 5 minutes.
>>12587304>A lot of games have "glitchless" categories but aren't actually glitchlessExamples? Are you gonna show the clip of the guy who keeps going "THAT SEEMS LIKE A GLITCH" over and over at GDQ?
I like speedrunning, it can be impressive and fun at times. The speedrunning "community" is a horror show at this point however, and I have no interest in being a part of it.
>>12587319NTA, but a fair amount of games will have a NMG today ruleset that typically covers both 100 and Any%. This is the "no major glitches" subset. What counts as a "major glitch" depends on that specific games' community, so you'd have to look up the specifics for that game if you were wanting to run with NMG rules.
Speedrunning is cool but it was ruined by retards. It's not just the trannys it's almost everyone involved in it, the other side of people like R White Goose and Karl Jobst are also extremely cringe.
>>12586895I like watching people who have mastered a game speedrun it. Going for WR and glitched runs is pure troonery though.
>>12586926>Others most certainly were notlike?
>>12587248Because it's funny.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7tlCLVLbew
>>12586895>Should people do it even though the developers never intended it to be played in such a way?this applies to both speedrunning and the lifestyle of the participants
If I like a game enough to play it over and over, usually I want to be 100%ing it or playing it as intended.
I miss 2010-2011 speedrunning, it's a dead hobby now
>>12588029Everything started to go shit, when amazon bought twitch.
no, it's peak mental illness
>>12586895glitchless is the peak of skill. everything else is slop.
>>12588431both of these people are mentally ill, the left cheated and lied about a highscore and the other cheated and lied about a time he got on a near 3 decade old game.
Speedrunning has always been a thing in the community. It’s just that it’s grown bigger because of YouTube.
>>12589109Pretty much this, started back in the days of SMB and Doom; then Quake perfected it with demos.>>12586895I used to speedrun Diablo 2. Its one of my favorite games of all time, and some years ago i wanted to make it interesting to me trying to beat the game as fast as possible. It was brought new life to the game i loved. Suddenly other things were important than normal, it forced me to play the game a different way and evaluate things you dont normally care. Especially on hardcore.I got fast and consistent really quick with the game; but grinding to the top 3 required way too much time and LUCK i can only imagine doing the grind if you are looking to get money while doing it (or be mentally ill).
>>12589109Things like not getting hit, not using items, finish as fast as possible are just natural challenges that arise from any kind of game environment like the idea of a boxer being untouchable or knocking someone out in the first 10 seconds.
>>12586915Though the vast majority of games do not care about time.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, hoping for a different outcomeSpeedrunners spend years playing the same level just to hit the right RNG combo so they can claim that they are the fastestSpeedrunning is flooded with the mentally ill as evidenced by this threadIt wastes a lot of time hyper-fixating on some arbitrary way to play every game without any appreciation for the games themselves
>>12589328>The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, hoping for a different outcomeNo it isn't.
>>12589328Definitions of Insane according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary:a(1)dated, now usually offensive : exhibiting a severely disordered state of mind(2)law : affected with insanity (see insanity sense 2)criminally insaneb: unable to think in a clear or sensible wayinsane with jealousy—not used technically2now usually offensive : used by, typical of, or intended for people having a severely disordered state of mindan insane asylum3: absurdan insane scheme for making moneyWhere did that meme definition come from anyway? I see it all the time. A movie or something?
>>12589346but... the guy from that one game said so...
>>12587802kek
lol clean it up, janny
>>12586895It was cool 20 years ago.Now it is just embarrassing. Even back in 1996 it was really fun to longjump and do shortcuts in mario64.Honestly the least cringe is the AGDQ exhibition where they can't reset and need to explain what they're doing or say some trivia.
>>12589351In modern parlance, insane usually means believing things without evidence. "Delusions"
>>12586895>Are you guys fans of speed running in retro games? Is it the peak of skill or just a cringe waste of time? Should people do it even though the developers never intended it to be played in such a way?Yes, speedrunning helped me wean off my video game addiction. Now I just doomscroll, and still speedrun, but it's hard to focus on just speedrunning. It's work. It's a good way to teach an unorganized adolescent productivity. Zoomers turning it into an esport is fucking stupid, though.
>>12590597>Zoomers turning it into an esport is fucking stupid, though.no one's turning it into an esport? unless you count the occasional meetup (which is reserved for a small handful of games that have enough interest and i can only think of one: SM64) where they hand out cash prizes as an esport, which is really erroneous.
Speed running in the context of finishing a game fast because you got good is fine. Speed running in the context of skipping as much of the game as possible just so your stopwatch says a low number is cancer.
What rule did the OP image break?
>>12590620Yes they areNo one gives a flying fuck about your SM64 569th place 3 views PB while practicing for 2 hours and grinding for 6 a day is celebratedGrinding a single popular game is rewarded with views and pats on the back, hopping from one to another nets 3 viewsNot streaming is not really speedrunning, gets you 3 viewsNot camming is not really speedrunning, 1-10 viewers topsZoomers go around discord channels flocking to PB pace streams chasing mindless dopamine hitsTAS gets more views than real runs (cheating is rewarded) whoever watches doesn't understand how much skill is involved anywayetc
>>12590635A pic of anon dethroning AAA's high score.
>>12590635Yelling about trannies is for /v/.
>>12590643none of what you listed is esports. that's just hobbyists having fun. esports implies an top-down league organizing everything.learn what terms mean before using them.
>>12590658>has autism>doesn't get esport faggotry means optimizing fun out of a hobbyGet a fork and stick it in the nearest socket retard
>esports means what i say it means! YOU have autism!whatever you dumb nigger. go shit your panties somewhere else
