I will say that OpenXcom in some ways is more of a PITA than the original TFTD because there the aliens would get stuck in closets and you could hunt them down at your leisure. Since OXC has a fixed AI the aliens can just wander around the map freely which is far more annoying. In the original you couldn't for example get zerg rushed since half the aliens were stuck in a closet.

Technically no. At Turn 20 the aliens switch from normal patrol to aggressive patrol mode. They still have to actually see your soldiers to have visibility on them, but they just start moving around more at turn 20. Also, normally only the aliens looking at your soldiers have visibility on them and they remember the soldier's presence for a few turns (varies depending on alien species and rank). There is one exception. If one alien can see a soldier, then everyone else has visibility on him for using mind control attacks or Blaster Bombs. That's why sometimes an alien off in some other corner of the map will inexplicably fire a Blaster Bomb and blow himself up when it hits terrain in front of him, because a different alien saw one of your soldiers and he fired the BB off.

they're not that bad once you get melee weapons. the one bad part is this is dependent on getting an Aquatoid terror mission for the Calcinite corpse and those are somewhat uncommon, and very rare after the early game. If you're desperate you may have to deliberately let Aquatoids attack your base so you can get a Calcinite corpse.

Memorizing all the alien spawn locations on the cruise ship missions was important in the original game but in OXC it's a bit meaningless since the aliens don't have the movement issues from the original.

Losing even one veteran unit can wreck your campaign; his replacement will not be equal to the challenge of his absence. If you're already winning you can absorb that damage, but otherwise you need to asspull some desperate measures to keep your edge.

You could get Lobsterman terror missions as early as April; if so it's best to just abort those. You need Ion Armor and drills to take them on.
