The best soundtrack ever created, Chao garden is kino, every stage is fun, and a great story that takes itself just the right amount of seriously. This is Sonic at its peak and its only been downhill from there, with every future game bordering on being unplayable.

It's true. Sega discontinued the Dreamcast on March 31, 2001, but Sega insisted that SA2 was released for Sonic's 10th birthday on June 23rd, 2001.

Sonic Adventure's director, Iizuka, said that if he couldn't release games for Sega consoles, then he wanted to release games for Nintendo's console, hence the amount of Sonic games on GameCube and GBA:

Sonic Adventure 2 is not very good compared to Adventure 1 and I would even go so far as to say it's the game that put the franchise on the path to mediocrity. It's not terrible but from this game forward the level design in 3D sonic games became "streamlined" and hallwayish and it's just gotten worse since. Adventure 1's levels, despite also having linear segments, just felt more open, were more fun to play around in and no two levels felt the same but in Adventure 2 many of the levels feel identical and don't have anything interesting to offer in terms of gameplay. The mech stages are just fucking awful too, I'm not going to pretend I was the biggest fan of Gamma's levels in SA1 but this is a massive downgrade from those the movement and control is worse, the levels are too long and slow, and they got rid of the counting down timer so there's no reason to actually shoot anything anymore. The only thing I would say SA2 does better are the treasure hunting stages and the sole reason for that is that they're unique stages, one could make the argument they're actually worse though because the radar only lets you find the emerald shards in a set order. I also miss SA1's character playstyles that didn't make it over, Tails's racing levels were fun even if they were easy, Amy's run away from the robot levels were unique and yes I actually do like Big's fishing levels.

Sonic Adventure 1 is truly unique, almost nothing from it has been done in a 3D Sonic game ever again or at least done in a way that was actually any good. You can tell a lot of effort and care was put into making it a unique and complete experience. Meanwhile, Sonic Adventure 2 feels exactly like what the rest of the games would end up being, and I'm sure someone will try to argue that since it set that standard it must be great but I can't see how that's true given how every game after it is a complete piece of shit.

One of the worst platformers I have ever played in my life. Sonic/shadow stages take like 2 minutes and the rest of the game is padded out with the fucking AWFUL treasure hunting stages with the worthless radar annd dogshit draw distance making emerald shards appear right as you’re flying past them(thanks meteor herd) and tails/egg man levels are even worse. Sonics levels are just linear rollar coasters except you have little to no control over him during setpieces and the homing attack sometimes just decides it doesn’t want to work

It's honestly really fucking amazing
The only levels I find to be kinda bad are like one or two Tails levels and the Rouge level with the gravity gimmick
Crazy Gadget ain't great with all the switches, but you can go really fast if you know what you're doing

This is one game from my childhood that I just adored, but then I wondered if it was just nostalgia
I got it again on Steam, downloaded some Dreamcast restoration shit, and got all 180 Emblems
So yeah, I think it's good, really good

SA1 has you fighting exactly the same bosses and playing exactly the same minigames with no changes across multiple characters' stories. Before you've even started replaying levels, in which the missions are completely banal and could have been accomplished your first run if it would let you. The alternate missions in SA2 actually do change how each stage is played.
