What was the hype for Zelda 64 like in the 90s?
>>
>>12591624

Nobody really cared actually.
>>
>>12591626
this, nobody was excited about it and the game flopped
People were still playing the shit out of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos

What’s with this revision of history? Were you even old enough to perceive reality then? Everyone thought it was dope. I remember my cousin got it and I watched him play one of the dungeons.

I was 12 and got the gold cartridge for Christmas 1998. Playing it throughout January when it was cold and dark outside is one my fondest vidya memories.

>There is a place called the Tower of Time where Link becomes a kid
So the original concept for OoT was to begin in the future and have Link change his own past? That's fucking mental.

What's weird is that I honestly don't remember any mainstream hype for Zelda 64 but Sonic Adventure had a massive ad presence in Toys 'R' Us when it launched. There was an entire section of the store devoted to the Dreamcast/Sonic Adventure with huge cardboard cutouts of the characters hanging from the ceiling and near the shelves etc. All I remember for OoT was the special preorder gold catridge ad.

this was my experience too. Hype came from magazines

Quite high. N64 owners were hungry for any kind of AAA title after enduring nothing but shit games for almost two years.

The N64 was culturally irrelevant. The back half of the 90s was all about Sony, bar Sega grabbing some initial hype with the Dreamcast. Tendies love to try and rewrite history, but the N64 was a flop that saw Nintendo go from market leader to also-ran. Games like Ocarina of Time later benefited hugely from internet glazing, rather than being massively hyped at the time. People who owned a PlayStation didn't even know it existed.

Nintendo Power gave an early summary of OoT once where Navi dies after meeting Link

We're discussing the hype before release. Nobody cared. After it was released, sure, it got a bit of buzz.

Stuff like this is so cool. I wish more companies would release like super detailed records of all the different unused ideas they had and phases big games went through before they settled on the final product.
>>
>>12592407
how did you fall for such blatant bait, holy shit
>>
>>12591624
It was the most anticipated video game of the year.
>>12591626
Lurk more.

>The N64 was culturally irrelevant.
Utter nonsense.
>>
>>12593248
He's right though. Playstation was the only "culturally relevant" gaming console of that time, followed by the PS2. N64 and Gamecube were most definitely culturally irrelevant.
>>
>>12593261
No he isn't. You're both know-nothing idiots.
>>
>>12593453
Come back to reality, tendie
>>
>>12591626
Another 1998 game this would be far more true for is MGS, since that game was what put the entire IP on the map. Zelda on the other hand was an already highly reputed series. ALttP was all over the tops of people's "best games of all time" lists and hype for OoT was considerable.

It wasn't completely irrelevant, there was some interest in N64 in homosexual circles due to its childish nature and Nintendo's choice of leather daddy mascot.
