Zoomers are right that cut/beta content for old games feels a little weird. What's your favorite, /vr/?
thread hiddent. zoomer
Wow how unnerving and liminalwe weren't meant to see this beta content and that is fucking horrifying
>>12592552Any kind of beta stuff from the original Sonic Adventure, there's tons of unused content and ideas they had for the game during its development.>>12592580I can understand their reaction slightly, it's similar to going out of a map in a game when I was younger, the thought that there's more to a game that we can see, possibly finding something undiscovered or something that's unexplained despite all of the datamining people do. The "liminal" nonsense is ridiculous though, same with certain trends that started when vidya icebergs left 4chan and became big on YouTube.
>>12592580Dumb ass nigga, you aren't a real gamer unless you have that childhood wonder of wanting to go out of bounds or visiting that place you saw in the gaming magazine that didn't appear in the game. That's the separation between newgen tourists and people who understand gaming. You used to sit down and reflect upon what you've experienced and dreamt about seeing more of it, versus just mindlessly going through a game like its an experience and moving on to the next slop put in your trough
>>12592634When early 3D games like SM64 came about I thought the worlds were endless and that everything had some sort of hidden secret levels or whatever. I never got scared of it tho.
>>12592634This. I always wanted to know what lies beyond the area you're supposed to play or things like what's inside chests behind shop's counters.
>>12592634You are one of the first real anons I've seen mention this, due to the influx of tourists hopping into vidya related hobbies they really do treat video games like checklists before moving onto the next one and never thinking about the previous one they just played again. They really do lack a soul and I mean that in a literal sense, they can't grasp that we can sit down and play our favorite games over and over again. I've noticed I have been getting insulted for wanting to discuss obscure vidya stuff like urban legends, rumors etc. I mentioned this on other boards but they genuinely just want to see things move on the screen and that's enough for them to give a game a 10/10, they don't care about the history or culture of a game, the story, or gameplay. They jump from game to game because they want to see flashy colors, it pisses me off when they go onto forums of games I like just to berate others, it's like they hate passion and actual fans of a game.>>12592682The biggest one for me was wanting to see what's past the "void", black chunks around certain parts of the world in RuneScape 2 back in the day.
>>12592552Lost media is an ARG
>>12592747Holy fuck what are those masks
>>12592829Those were how H'ween masks looked at first in early RS2 before an update, that screenshot is from a 2005scape RSPS that was shut down some time ago. Here's an authentic screenshot from back in the day, or at least I think it's authentic. There's also a unique looking interpretation of the masks from the sixth issue of the God Letters when they were released in 2002.
even though cut content was probably removed because it was inefficient i find myself brainstorming how it could have been integrated effectively.this chrono trigger mountain in prehistory was just another cave interior the devs stated couldnt figure out what to do with it and it ended up getting replaced by the black omen. its pretty dull but at the end of the day it was actually NEEDED. -when all the side quests open up theres 1 for every character in your party... except for- surprise surprise, ayla, the prehistoric character.-the entire right half of the world map is completely void of anything visitable or explorable-65 mil bc is the only era you never no reason to come back to after tyrano. the moment the meteor hits that age is completely useless for the rest of the game.the devs could have made it some kinda shrine/important place for the reptites that you visit and learn more about their history after wiping them out. give it some kinda primitive automatons the reptites made centuries ago as foes for the party. beating it would be the only way ayla could unlock iron/bronze fist when shes of right level. the fact that the mountain is so friggen tall it could be seen from space. let it be the entire reason lavos choose earth as its next target cause it was able to see that, due to that mountain theres life on that planet to be drained.
>>12592878i mean it definetly sounds like a holy placehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNe-BNs0bFk
>>12592552manufactured generation wars were a disaster for this board
>>12592878>>12592904thanks for the content, didn't know about it, that track is goddamn beautiful
>>12592634That is the real difference between gaming now vs then. Now games are just content to be consumed and lists to be checked off rather than worlds to explore.
Cut content never looks right. Like you can't just plop it back into the base game (though some people do try that)
>>12592552I am 38 and I've had this feeling since being a kid. Cut content is both familiar and yet different from a final game. It has this surreal "something's off" feel. Ever since I started using Internet in 2001, I was a part of differrent communities: Resident Evil 1.5 (bioflames forum), several Half-Life 2 beta forums, STALKER builds forums, Assemblergames, now TCRF. Maybe some others I forgot about. There is one thing that zoomers are wrong about though: they somehow believe that if a pre-release version of their favorite game is leaked then modding community will restore cut content into the game. From my experience, all these restoration projects are just drama magnets. The best mods are those that just let you experience the beta version without crashes.
>incomplete stuff is incompleteWow this is profound. I don’t know how you guys come to these incredible conclusions.
>>12593531Who are you quoting?
>>12593549It’s a summary of the OP and most of the thread.I appreciate it’s not an exact quote. Thank you for clarifying that. Cut content will obviously feel off. It’s incomplete. Why is this a profound thing that zoomers are right about?
>>12593486This post is ok though.
Beta content is so scary.
Many old builds of games can be pretty underwhelming. However there are many out there that are likely in a fairly playable state and those would be very interesting to be able to check out. 5th and 6th gen are the sweet spot for the especially juicy prototypes imo, since 3D was new and things were still pretty experimental there's a lot of interesting stuff devs left behind for better or for worse. My white whales are Ocarina of Time and Mario Sunshine, along with a few other games I would like to see but not nearly as much as those two. I'm really happy with the stuff that I and a few other people have been able to uncover with OoT but I'm still on the hunt for a playable prototype build. I hope I find it before I die. What >>12592634 said is true, the fascination with this stuff really stems from just wanting to see more of a game you love. I wandered around in games like OoT for hundreds of hours after I had already completed it just trying to find things I had heard rumors about. I remember when I got a gameshark and I put in some code I found online that let you see an early version of the pots that are in the game. It sounds so fucking stupid, it's just a pot, but it blew my mind. What secrets did the cartridge hold? I soon went down a rabbit hole that I still haven't seen the end of, I would go through old issues of Nintendo Power and see screenshots of the game that were completely different from the game I had in-front of me, I joined a forum of other people who were also intrigued by this stuff and then someone there had somehow gotten their hands on the Master Quest debug ROM and from there we found even more stuff, I would keep poking around other places and making connections and that led to me getting in contact with an old NoA play tester where I was able to get the release candidate build and the F-Zero cartridge that had the 1997 build data on it which are now available online. Idk I just think it's neat.
Mario looked at the camera and made a Tom and Jerry holler scream. I was so scared that I screamed and jizzed my pants at the same time.

>>12594163I snuck into my older brother's room when I was younger so I could play his N64. Mario 64 was already in there and I was too scared of getting caught to change the cartridge to anything else, so I just turned it on quickly. When it got to the opening screen where you could play with Mario's face, it was dim, as if he was in a darkened room and he was facing away from the camera. I tried pressing every button I could but nothing could get him to turn around. Sometimes he would really slowly do a half turn as if he was going to look at the camera, but he'd stop before you could even see his eyes and it would go back to staring at the back of his head. It was really boring and frustrating and I couldn't get the file select screen to open after 20mins of this shit so I just turned it off. I guess Mario was just depressed, could have been a beta cartidge maybe, but I think his copy was haunted or something.

>>12592552Shenmue had a bicycle you could use that was removed for unknown reasons at the last minute. On one hand the map is too small for a bicycle, but on the other there are already so many little things you can do it's odd that a bicycle was too much.
>>12592878>-65 mil bc is the only era you never no reason to come back to after tyrano. the moment the meteor hits that age is completely useless for the rest of the game. You still have to go there for stuff like the sun stone quest. What I always found interesting about the prehistoric area was how the map looks a lot more RPGMaker-ish compared to the rest, with rough and choppy borders for the landmasses instead of the smooth ones in all the others that end in beaches instead of cliffs, the copypasting of that single mountain asset everywhere, the lack of water-shades to imply depth, etc.It feels like as if they never found the time or budget to polish it to the same degree as the others......or they deliberately wanted to have the 65,000,000 B.C. area "stuck in the past" as a visual gag.
>>12593621Have you contacted a ton of the old NOA crowd? Been a lot of success recently for places like STI in regards to getting builds.(mostly through not being a weird idiot and asking give rom pls but through askiing for a interview or something, and going and connecting further from there. has to be some genuineness in it though so I wouldn't recommend this if you just care about the rom. it wont work and will probably just close the person you try it on off forever)
>>12595464>choppy borders for the landmasses instead of the smooth ones in all the others that end in beaches instead of cliffsBeaches were created by millions of years of water erosion of those very cliffs. Like… what do you think sand is?
>>12593621>>12595505I don't know if you need this but stop being talkative here or even in discord servers frequented by "preservation communities" about your actual process and who you contacted. For example the Starmen forums interviewed quite a lot of beta testers and old translators for EB/M3 but at some point and even before the interviews went too mainstream NoA started getting involved directly and telling them certain topics were off-limits even without a clear NDA or reason, so many backed off from further involvement. Then most of the NoA/NoE/lost localizations for SNES were tracked down by WATA and now sit rotting in private collections. They're not even used for rereleases so it might be that even when the company reaches out for them to source the ROMs legally they act parasitically and greedily. Then there's the auctions or sales that immediately go wrong and sometimes get confiscated right after release without even giving time for proper documentation like that sega leak trove. Nip collectors are already quite secretive and mafia like (to the point every Satellaview dump now is anonymous, not even sellers want to deal with that) and western collectors and scalpers draining the life out of the japanese aftermarket ruined it further.Older teams aren't that big, they're all credited and it's very easy with a date and console to estimate the source and pay a visit or send some request to return company materials.
>>12595751I fucking hate WATA
