>>12592709Jarvas and Stargazers have awesome premises but fucking suck as videogames
I have played most of those but I'm not home to post more and my collages. I would say though that the real turning point wasn't DQ3, it was DQ2. DQ2 is the one that Kickstarter the genre
>>12592739No, it was Miracle Warriors. It established the “recruit four niggas in a row” genre. Not DQ II, as widely believed.
>>12592740Nobody cared about the FC version of this game.
>>12592709RPGs prior to FFVII? Unplayable.
>>12592898Why would any Gen Z think anyone cares about their opinion on anything?
>>12592951They're all narcissists
I played through Deep Dungeon on msx and it’s just Wizardry for casuals, it even has you kicking the doors open
>>12593418It's very basic, it was basically trying to be DQ1 for dungeon crawls. How different is the MSX version? There is a revision of 2 IIRC, the disk writer version, win which the final floor is differentDD3 and 4 are pretty good however, 3 is one of the hardest RPGs that I've played on the system
Not bad but very basic, only 8 floors, 1vs1 battles, spell use HP which mean that they're basically almost NEVER worth using because basic physical attacks will make you lose less HP.
More of the same but it's a little more varied.
Huge overworld to explore and towns and overworld have no loading screen, it's all part of the same map. Once you get the boat there is a lot of freedom. Password save only and it doesn't keep in memory key progression events so every time you reload a password you have to do everything all over again, if you don't you can even get softlocked if you do things in the wrong. Some things are also really obtuse, for instance there is a fast travel option but it's so well hidden you will never find it without a guide. This one is a classic but I ended up not liking it so much because of that.Fights are still 1 vs 1. Equipment breaks after use but you can hire a blacksmith which a slot in the very limited inventory
>Mirai Shinwa JarvasDidn't play, iirc it's a known kuso>Cleopatra no MahouPre-Final Fantasy RPG/Adventure game by Square. It's more of an adventure game and the RPG elements are the icing on the cake, very simple 1vs1 stuff but it'll take some grinding. I have a soft spot for this game but it's not the RPG elements that make it shine.
Going from Deep Dungeon to this such a huge step in content and quality it's unreal. Party of 6 members, recruit tons of different demons, fuck huge world with some non linearility... Combat doesn't have the depth of its successors, there aren't even buffs and debuffs, but for the time on Famicom this is as good as it gets.
>Ultima: Kyoufu no ExodusI actually never played Ultima 3 and 4 on FC because I wanted to save something good for last and I still haven't gotten to it yet>Haja no FuuinCame out at the same time as as SMS version (which was I think the first JRPG released in the west), but they're both different game with similar mechanics. The SMS version is more Dragon Quest like, while the FC version is a faithful port of the computer version. This is THE most grindy RPG I've played on the system. The level of grind required is quite insane. There are 4 party members but combat is super basic, except from item usage (which you'll mostly keep for bosses but reacquiring items is a pain) there are only physical attacks, and rather than a proper 4 member combat system it's more like you have 4x1 vs 1 as only one member gets to act per turn. The game shines when you're exploring and trying to figure out how to progress.
This one is a sort middle ground between Zelda and DQ1. Like in Zelda you go from screen to screen and enemies are visible on the map. There are up to 3 members, and you'll meet several people who will join the party only to leave soon after so don't invest too much time on any party member that doesn't look like the hero.
Unlike its successors, DQ2 was a sleeper hit; so it took 9 months before starting to see other games that take inspiration from it. In this case it's the world exploration and the fact that dungeons are divided between caves and towers. Action based combat system. Like the rest of the series it spawned, it's known for being extremely easy. You'll gain levels every few fights and end the game at around lvl 150 easily.
>Momotarou DensetsuThe first real "DQ clone", though even 9 months after DQ2 it's still only a clone of DQ1. As will become the standards for DQ1 clones on the system, even though fights are 1vs1 there will be helpers, members who aren't full party members but which will help occasionally in and out of combat.Known for its humour and art style, spawned a pretty big series (and sub series, which became more famous than the main). It has an enhanced port on PC-Engine.
> Hoshi wo Miru HitoKnown kuso, never played either>OutlandersI tried to get into it but this is terrible too>Ginga no SanninNever played either but it's known for being Nintendo published. RPG in space. Combat seems very simple.> Final Fantasy'nuff said> GeGeGe no Kitarou 2: Youkai Gundan no ChousenBased on a manga/anime license, this is another simple 1vs1 system but I thought it was quite fun. The presentation is really good for the time.
>WizardryIt's Wizardry, what can I say, it looks great, sounds great, and it has a bug that makes armor useless. The game autosave after every battle or important action, you can back up your save and avoid losing your progress when dying if you buy a saving peripheral; but if you really want to use exploits you can also set the text speed to "so low you always need to press confirm" and reset before you save gets overwritten.
OP didn't mention this one although it's more of an action game than an RPG, I would say that it's still a corner stone of early Famicom RPGingAs one would expect some things required to progress in the game are quite obtuse
>>12594108Cute art though, and one ofnthe first JRPG catgirls.SMT had a catgirl first but she was nameless.
>>12594413You mean MT I'm sure, and she's called Nekomata
>>12592709Deep Dungeon 1 has to be the worst rpg I've ever played. If you thought Dragon Quest was a dumbed down experience, this one takes it to the next level.
>>12594416Yea sorry. Nekomata was just her species tough? Not a named npc?
>>12594490Nah it's her name, I think her race is simply "Beast" in MT1
>>12594490She is super cute though. Later games made the nekomata furry. I like "cat ears+leotard" best. It is hard to nail down if the ranma tiger pinup landed in 1987 before the game did, but she does resemble girl type ranma catslut mode.
>>12594669> ranma tiger pinupI blame Catgirl Ranma for twisting the sexuality of 90s kids, and being the moment when global culture started its slow downward spiral into degeneracy.
>>12594442It’s just a dumbed down wizardry clone, it was good for the time >>12593814I think the graphics and sound are betterNo loading eitherYou get a Password for DD2 MSXI haven’t played that one yet but it has an overhead town unlike the disk system version
>>12595230You can import your character from 1 to 2 on FDS too but all it does is keep your name and make you start at lvl 2, something you can achieve in 3 battles (plus you don't get to choose your lvl up stat gain distribution when importing although it's just 1 point)
>>12595020lol shut up
>>12595020>>12595407Ranma created Dobson though
