If you're gonna do FF or DW it's in my opinion preferable to start with the Famicom games to see how the franchise evolves, but those games aren't really exactly beginner friendly. Pokémon is also a great, unorthodox choice, but people here don't like to admit Pokémon is a pipeline to traditional JRPGs.

Don't start with 7, I don't generally like JRPGs as a genre, and it was a miserable slog. >everything is just so damn slow-paced from the animations to the transitions to the loading to the random encounters to the constant cutscenes and monologues>combat is completely braindead autopilot button mashing. Regular enemies are just absolutely braindead cannon fodder for grinding that pose zero risk whatsoever. Even bosses are a complete joke, and you will only ever fail to poorly telegraphed gotcha trollshit>camera angles in combat are obnoxious and constantly obscure the fight >targeting enemies and allies in fights is very finicky. Having to actually point at 3D models instead of just using the list of names is baffling.>magic spells are very samey and don't really fill a niche or usecase, and have few meaningful tradeoffs>no descriptions for any spells/items while in combat, and no symbols for status elements or way to view them>translation is extremely shoddy and amateurish, full of grammatical errors, spelling errors, nonsensical engrish>dialogue boxes can appear all over the screen and lack proper formatting>character names in dialogue are only shown in the first line of their dialogue >when new, unnamed characters speak, no name is shown, and the dialogue box appears the same way as if the previous character is still speaking>d-pad digital movement feels awful to navigate isometric maps; you will frequently bang into walls and go back the way you came on screen transition >prerendered backgrounds are very unclear and unintuitive regarding what areas you can traverse and what you can interact with >constantly have to go into towns and talk to every Tom, Dick, and Harry to arbitrarily advance the plot>99% of the objects in the world can't be interacted with, while a few arbitrarily can and give zero indication of this
Nononononono ur doin it all wrong OP see FFVI is a very bad game. I suggest Chrono Trigger or FFVII as those are very good games but FFVI is a very, VERY bad game. Don’t waste your time, you will be confused and disappointed.

FFVII really is the best starter jrpgthere's a reason it single handedly made the genre big in the west, something that ffvi, dragon quest, chrono trigger etc all failed to do. If you dont like ffvii within the first couple hours of playing it the genre isnt for you. if you HAVE to play something that looks more modern go with FFX, emulate the ps2 because the shitmaster is a tragedy
